Roger Corman, the influential director, producer, and studio executive of independent film, has died at the age of 98.
Known as “The Pope of Pop Cinema,” Corman helmed hundreds of low-budget independent films over the course of his seven-decade career. Some of his notable credits included The Little Shop of Horror, Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Death Race 2000, A Bucket of Blood, and X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes.
As a producer, Corman also gave opportunities to many young directors and actors who would become future Hollywood legends in their own right. Directors like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Ron Howard, and Jonathan Demme all worked with Corman early on in their careers. Later, these directors put Corman in their own films: he made cameos in Scorsese’s The Godfather Part II, Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, and Howard’s Apollo 13.

It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan grew up loving films and aspired to be filmmakers. While they have now become esteemed directors and creators today, the road was not smooth sailing and they had to find their footing in the industry during their early days. Nolan’s breakthrough film Memento was based on Jonathan’s short story Memento Mori.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

In a recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the comedian made a surprising offer to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. John Oliver proposed a deal worth $1 million per year if Thomas would choose to resign from his position on the Supreme Court immediately. And he was not joking while offering this.

The talk show host also criticized Thomas’ controversial vote in 2022, where he played a key role in overturning Roe v. Wade, a significant decision that had previously protected the right to abortion. Oliver expressed his dissatisfaction with Thomas’ stance on this matter and used his platform to voice criticism.

In the years since his premature death, reggae legend Bob Marley has been culturally defanged into a benevolent good-times symbol safe for dorm rooms and yuppie living rooms everywhere. Marley’s string of popular songs, many of which were compiled in his posthumous greatest hits collection “Legend,” turned him into one of the best-selling artists in the world, but this mass-market commercial appeal also necessitated a dilution of his radicalism and spiritual essence. Though many can probably identify “Jamming” or “Is This Love?” as a Marley tune if it was played for them, he’s still probably associated more with generic weed culture than any type of revolution, which is an obvious shame given the political roots of reggae and Jamaica’s storied history.
It makes some kind of sense that “Bob Marley: One Love” is being released at this time of heightened political consciousness. Granted, most contemporary music biopics...

Stephen Bear has shared his first update since getting an early release from prison, serving just 11 months of a 21-month sentence.
Bear served time for his conviction for voyeurism, disclosing private, sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress, and harassment without violence.
The former Challenge competitor surfaced in a new video featuring a shot of him jogging outdoors into the video frame.
Bear stops and begins throwing punches in the air before he winks and flexes for the camera.
Music plays over the scene with a sound bite from part of Tom Hardy’s film Legend, which tells the story of twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray wreaking havoc on London in the 1960s.
“It’s not how hard you can hit, it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forword…,” Bear’s video caption said, a nod to Sylvester Stallone’s line from the movie Rocky.

I don’t keep track of what’s new on Netflix or Prime or wherever. I don’t even get out much, really, except to walk my dog. Exclusive: The Stranger Things stage show, an unbelievably brilliant new blueprint for theatricality that premieres in London’s West End tonight, will be the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.
Breaking Baz can reveal that parts two and three are set to follow the inaugural play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, in two- or three-year intervals, according to insiders associated with the production. The stage sequels will launch in London first.
Meanwhile, there are already plans for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to transfer to Broadway.
None of that’s official yet, of course. Producers and backers will study reviews out on Friday and across the weekend and the box office receipts before green-lighting any further productions.

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. Video game fans got a huge surprise when Nintendo announced Nov. 7 that it is developing a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda alongside Sony Pictures. The film is being directed by Wes Ball, best known for helming three “Maze Runner” movies. He’s also set to relaunch the “Planet of the Apes” franchise after a seven-year hiatus with next year’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”
While Ball’s hiring might’ve come as a surprise to some, Zelda fans quickly discovered one of the director’s tweets from 13 years ago in which he posted about how his dream of one day directing a Zelda movie would most likely never happen.
“Since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it…the next big mo-cap ‘Avatar’-like movie should be…The Legend Of Zelda,” Ball posted on Jan. 29, 2010. Flash forward over 13 years later,...

Competition on this season of “The Voice” is heating up as the NBC show enters into its battle round.
In TheWrap’s exclusive clip of Monday’s episode, Team Legend’s Kaylee Shimizu and Elizabeth Evans are paired up in a battle, and the duo wows the coaches as they perform an emotional rendition of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Traitor.”
The contestants score a standing ovation from their own coach, John Legend, as well as new coach Reba McEntire, who shared with the women she was “in awe” during their performance.
“Elizabeth and Kaylee, that was fantastic — unbelievable vocal range and power,” McEntire told the pair. “Elizabeth, when you opened your mouth and hit that big note, I was just in awe. Wow, and Kaylee, your range is just incredible — y’all just really did complement each other — love the harmonies.”
Ahead of Legend’s decision, McEntire disclosed that her pick for the battle was Evans....

Tommy Lee Jones has yet to anchor a series in Taylor Sheridan’s vast TV universe — but at least he’s starring in an upcoming film from the producer, the crime drama “Finestkind.” You can watch the brand-new trailer for the Paramount+ film above.
In “Finestkind,” Jones plays the father of two sons who were raised in very different worlds (Ben Foster and Toby Wallace), who reunite over a fateful summer, first putting their father’s fishing boat in jeopardy and then embarking into even more dangerous waters.
According to the official synopsis, the movie is “set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang.”
The movie also stars Jenna Ortega, Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford. Fun fact: an earlier iteration of...

Who knew you needed tissues to watch The Voice? Monday’s episode became unexpectedly emotional when one singer, whom you’ll read all about below, left at least two members of the coaching panel in tears with a heart-tugging Whitney Houston cover (and the story of its significance). Gwen Stefani might actually want to keep crying, too, because the last contestants that she added to her team were significantly less impressive than John Legend, Reba McEntire and Niall Horan’s recruits. Read on, and we’ll go over all of Monday’s Blind Auditions…

NBC’s The Voice Season 24 continues, and we love the dynamic of the new coaches. We all miss Blake Shelton as the main star of the coaching stage, but his wife, Gwen Stefani, stepped in during his absence. And Shelton has country icon Reba McEntire to take over as the new queen. Unfortunately, early rumors suggested McEntire and Stefani didn’t get along. And McEntire admitted that she found Stefani “intimidating” upon first meeting.

John Legend recently met his doppelganger, 34-year-old Talakai, during an episode of The Voice.
Legend, a veteran of the show, was pleasantly surprised when he turned his chair around to find a familiar face looking back at him.
Legend even cracked a smile as he watched the performance.
Talakai, for his part, is enjoying the extra attention.
He told local TV station Kcra 3 that it felt like a family member was looking back at him, and had to “contain” himself to get through the whole song.
Talakai said that even at school and work, people would tell he looked like Legend, even having people sing some of his songs as he walked by.
They were not the only ones who noticed the resemblance.
Once all the other judges saw him clearly, they had to remark on the uncanny similarities.
Gwen Stefani, one of the four judges, laughed and said the resemblance was “crazy.

Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

A quick and partial mea culpa to Amazon’s Lore, Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries reboot and several other semi-recent spooky, based-on-fact anthology series to which I gave mixed reviews for general unevenness and because I’d seen the same format used on many superior shows over the years.
It isn’t that Lore and Unsolved Mysteries have suddenly become good shows in my memory. But watching Peacock’s new spooky, based-on-fact anthology series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams, I was struck by how often episodes had me yearning not for installments of the genre’s top-tier programs but just for the proficient comforts of uneven mediocrity.
Having John Carpenter’s name atop Suburban Screams isn’t wholly symbolic. He co-wrote the series’ forgettable musical theme and he directed one of its six installments. The truth, though, is that affixing the “John Carpenter” brand makes it only worthy of being reviewed,...

Ever since Ridley Scott announced he would be helming a film on the life of Napoleon, we all knew there would be a director’s cut. But unlike some of his other pictures, we’re getting the extended cut of Napoleon in a much smaller window.
In a new interview with Total Film – the issue of which hits stands this week – Ridley Scott said a director’s cut of Napoleon is guaranteed. “I’m working on it. It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning…And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony, and then it has its run, and then the perfect thing is that [the director’s cut] goes to streaming, and we have four hours 10 minutes.” While no specific release date has been set, considering Napoleon comes out on November 22nd, we could reasonably expect the director’s cut to hit streaming sometime next year based on his words.

One of Tom Hardy’s first major roles found him starring alongside Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Nemesis, but Hardy didn’t make a particularly good impression on Stewart at the time.
Patrick Stewart shared his thoughts about Star Trek: Nemesis in his new memoir, ‘Making It So.’ He found Nemesis to be “particularly weak” compared to Star Trek: First Contact. “I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play,” Stewart wrote, “and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.” Shinzon was a discarded clone of Jean-Luc Picard raised by Remans.
Stewart continued, “Tom wouldn’t engage with any of us on a social level: never said ‘Good morning,’ never said ‘Good night,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend. He was by no means...

Everyone’s gone to the festivals. But here on the home front, one thing still leads to another.
Last Saturday, I picked up a slightly tattered copy of an old crime biography, Frank Costello: Prime Minister of the Underworld, at one of those sidewalk libraries.
Published in 1974, the year after mob boss Costello died at the age of 82, the book was written by his long-time lawyer George Wolf with co-writer Joseph Dimona.
As lawyer books go, it wasn’t bad. Lots of first-hand anecdotes. Not too much ax-grinding. And a reasonably clear re-telling of an oft-told saga about what they used to call “The Syndicate,” from tawdry roots in New York’s Italian ghettos, through the Italo-Jewish alliance of bootlegging gangs, to political machinations, over-throw of the old Sicilian crime lords, Murder Inc., Bugsy Siegel, Las Vegas, the Kefauver hearings and beyond.

Perhaps more than any other filmmaker, Ridley Scott has thoroughly embraced the use of the director’s cut. Many of his movies have received the director’s cut treatment, including Blade Runner, Legend, and Kingdom of Heaven, and it sounds like his upcoming Napoleon movie will as well.
While speaking with Empire Magazine (via World of Reel), Ridley Scott said he has a “fantastic” director’s cut of Napoleon which is nearly four-and-a-half hours. There is no word on if or when it will be released, but Scott hopes that Apple will eventually screen it.
Napoleon’ is almost three hours long, although Scott has a “fantastic” near four-and-a-half-hour cut, which features more of Joséphine’s life before she meets Napoleon. He’d love Apple (who funded the film) to eventually screen it. But what they have now is hardly slight. “It’s an astonishing story,” Phoenix says of Napoleon’s life.

Welp! That old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be. Kevin Hart recently learned a harsh lesson in the art of aging after challenging former NFL player Stevan Ridley to a 40-yard dash. During his attempt to do “young stuff,” Hart tore his lower abdomen and abductors. Calling himself the Dumbest Man Alive, Hart is recovering in a wheelchair after the incident. To control the narrative and perhaps warn his fans to respect their aging bodies, Hart posted a message to social media detailing his injury.
In the video, Hart says he argued with Ridley about who is faster. The duo agreed to engage in a 40-yard dash, and that’s where it all went south.
“We get out there, we go run the 40-yard dash,” Hart said. “40-yard dash. Guys, I blew all my s–t. Tore my lower abdomen, my abductors. I don’t even know what that is,...

After all the vacillating the past few days over the backdoor target, Tuesday in the “Big Brother 25” house was pretty quiet from that perspective. Hisam remains the target and no one (read: Cirie and Izzy) is budging on that. So that meant time to focus on next week and form more fake alliances.
There is truly nothing this group loves more than making alliances. Some are real, some are fake, most of them last for, like, two days and even less before word gets out to the rest of the house. It’s an absolute headache trying to keep track now. The Savage Seven formed a few days ago but were iffy on the name. Now they are Seven Deadly Sins. Perhaps indicative of the gameplay, they tried to assign themselves a sin but couldn’t name them all. They’ve circled America as a target, as she’s been...

I remember her hands trembling. They did not tremble. She was not afraid. She was too fired up, too righteous, too right to know fear in that moment.
My memory is tainted by the ensuing smear campaign, a campaign that did not end until today, when Sinéad O'Connor died at the infuriatingly young age of 56 -- and I'm probably a fool to believe this denigration will cease just because she's not around to defend herself anymore. I've never seen a popular musician face such unremitting scorn. Not even close. But O'Connor -- contrary to the narrative seared into our psyches by a media that could not bear her scorched-earth declaration that the Catholic Church is, charitable works be damned, a factory of institutionally abetted child abuse -- never stopped speaking her truth. The Deepest Breath Photo: Netflix
The Deepest Breath, Netflix, from July 19
Laura McGann brings home the sheer athleticism and courage of freediving as, for the first minutes of this film, you're likely to find yourself holding your breath like the participants as you watch a dive in real time. Her film interweaves the story of Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini and Irishman Stephen Keenan, who became the diver tasked with ensuring her safety on difficult dives. The level of danger involved - especially during the strenuous surfacing, when the divers are short of breath - is brought home as McGann charts Zecchini's dedication to the sport and the unusual route that Kennan took into it. This documentary proves gripping and poignant in equal measure.
Videodrome, 11.10pm, Legend (Freeview Channel 41), Tuesday, July 18

After his junior year at Kansas, basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain was ready to leave college to make some money. The NBA didn’t take players who left school early, so instead of playing competitively, Wilt joined the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters on a lengthy tour of Europe.
Seeing Wilt, one of the greatest players of all time, in a red, white, and-blue uniform, performing in a traveling basketball circus seems strange today. The decades that followed Wilt’s Globetrotter years have cast the great athlete in a narrow role: a killer,...

For us, it’s how enjoyable they are, so, yes, some will deviate a bit from the usual rules of the genre, but all will be fun. So let’s take a look at what we consider the best sword and sorcery movies!
