A visual feast
agnabeya2 September 2018
This documentary is crammed with history and fascinating facts- even if you think you already know all there is to know. The format of animated artwork immediately made me think of Loving Vincent- which animated Van Goch's paintings to tell his story. This animation is cut with film clips of the time and contemporary photographs of the artists themselves. It is an echanting feast for art lovers, yes, but enthralling for people like me who know nothing about art or artists - and generally just don't 'get' art. I still don't, but a good story well told is a joy.

pure genius
It is impossible to overstate how brilliant this series of episodes actually is

First of all it covers the first 50 years of the Art Scene in XXth century Paris; which arguably contains one of the greatest gathering of Art geniuses in one locale .... Post 45 the braindrain took that scene to New York but 1900-1945 Paris was it if Art was your tipple

The way this has been cobbled together is commensurate to the topic at hand; it is a clever weave of photo/film footage of the times and BRILLIANT computer images artistically designed to be the cement of this series

The quality never wavers; it is of the highest all the way through. Sadly to my knowledge there are only the FR and the GER version; no subs were as yet put together for ENG viewers and that is a crying shame. There might a DVD version I do not know; but the series is fully accessible on Arte (this written Oct 2022)

Anyway highly highly recommended for all Art lovers.
