Not all of Nicolas Cage’s non-stop list of movies are that bad, but they’re not all that good, either. Some of them, like Pay the Ghost, feel as though they could be better but aren’t that bad when all is said and done. The movie takes its cue from many others when incorporating a legend that helps to give the premise a bit of backstory that feeds into the fears of many parents when it comes to their children. The idea is that children tend to go missing in New York on Halloween and are never seen again, but many

Nicolas Cage has had enough of the press taking shots at him for his era of straight-to-vod movies. The Oscar winner had a string of theatrical flops around 2014, including duds such as “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” and so his career pivoted almost exclusively to VOD titles like “The Runner,” “Pay the Ghost,” “The Trust” and more. Anyone who claimed Cage didn’t care about his career during this era was dead wrong.
“People thought I didn’t care. I did. I was caring,” Cage recently told Rolling Stone. “I think that I did some of the best work of my life in that so-called ‘direct to video’ period. ‘Massive Talent’ was in that group. ‘Mandy’ was in that group. ‘Pig,’ ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans,’ ‘Joe,’ ‘Mom and Dad,’ ‘Color Out of Space’ — they were all in that group. ‘The Runner’ I thought was terrific.

Stars: Lauren Beatty, Greg Bryk, Katharine King So, Michael Ironside, Judith Buchan | Written by Wendy Hill-Tout, Lowell | Directed by Amelia Moses
We reviewed Amelia Moses’ Bleed With Me at Fantasia last year. And now her latest feature, Bloodthirsty, co-written by Wendy Hill-Tout and her daughter Lowell, is screening at Frightfest after a successful US festival run. Her first film was a take on vampirism, the second takes on lycanthropy. Can she go two for two in updating classic monsters?
Grey is a singer with a hit debut album. She also has writer’s block and nightmares about becoming a wolf. Dr. Swan gives her pills but they aren’t helping. She might have a cure for her writing issues though. Vaughn Daniels a reclusive producer whose career is equal parts successful and controversial has offered his services. Grey and her girlfriend Charlie (Katharine King So; Transplant) take up residence at his isolated studio.

In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.
The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way...

Probably one of the more overlooked aspects of the filmmaking process is sound design, which can be a crucial element to any movie, but especially when it comes to genre projects. Sound can elevate a mood, hint at impending dangers, set the stage for the unusual and so much more.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to catch up with one of the busiest sound designers out there, Katie Halliday, who recently worked on The Strain, Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival, Pay the Ghost, as well as Antibirth, which is set to make its world premiere later this month at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
Check out what Halliday had to say on the inspiration to pursue a career in sound, some of the earlier projects she worked on, and her thoughts on the misconceptions of sound design.

New on DVD & BluRay this week are three films which awards season completists will need to see...
Mr Holmes in which 76 year-old spry Sir Ian McKellen is aged up to play the world's most famous detective at 93 years of age as he mind begins to deteriorate. Mr Holmes was a leggy arthouse hit this summer but can that be converted into an awards run for Sir Ian? We shall see... Tangerine, one of the year's best films, follows Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) & Alexandra (Mya Taylor), best friends & hookers, as they search for Sin-Dee's boyfriend/pimp (James Ransone) who cheated on her "with real fish!" during her latest prison stint. It's the most unexpected and awesome Christmas comedy ever. It's already snagged multiple Gotham nominations but pray for Golden Globe, Bfca, Spirit nominations and top ten lists because this Sean Baker gem deserves them. Trainwreck, or The Coronation of Amy Schumer as 2015's It Girl.

[Editor's Note: We're bringing some of our columns from Deadly Magazine into Daily Dead as well and today we have a look at our review roundup from Monte he likes to call "Movie Mayhem." Each month, he'll give you the rundown on movies he watched over the last 30 days that you may be interested in checking out. In the first installment on Daily Dead, find out what he thought of Bone Tomahawk, Tales of Halloween, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and more...]
Bone Tomahawk: It’s a horror film, but it’s mostly a western. Add Kurt Russell, some cannibals and basically point me in the direction of the movie theater because I’m sold. “Bone Tomahawk” is an impressive film, one of the best of the year so far; a mix of unusual humor, touches of thoroughly effective and satisfying horror, a beautifully rendered western era composition, and stunning performances from an impressive cast. Richard Jenkins, known to horror fans as one of the operators of horror in “The Cabin in the Woods”, is amazing. Mr. Jenkins constructs a character that is both too old to banter with the mindset of those younger than him but also too old to not share whatever wisdom he can conjure up through insufferable anecdotes. Matthew Fox, from televisions “Lost”, plays a prideful and somewhat despicable hired gun. Mr. Fox might be at his best here,...

Is Nicolas Cage chasing a ghost?
Where do films begin? Sometimes they’re just an idea, a discussion between friends, something that gets gradually rounded out and is always intended for the screen. Sometimes they’re screenplays created out of whole cloth and touted round the studios for years in the hope that somebody will bite. Often, they’re independent works of fiction – novels or short stories – and that’s the case with Pay The Ghost, which stars Nicolas Cage and Sarah Wayne Callies and is released on DVD this week. We spoke to Tim Lebbon, the original author, about the experience of having his work adapted for the big screen.
“I wrote the short story about 15 years ago for an American anthology,” he says. “Then some time later I got a call from Ian Levy at Midnight Kitchen Productions. It did come out the of blue. He said he was interested in it so.

Nicolas Cage on why he turned down Lord Of The Rings, and his thoughts on The Wicker Man internet memes...
The role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson's trilogy of Lord Of The Rings films was ultimately taken on by Viggo Mortensen. He was a late replacement for Stuart Townsend, who left the role four days into shooting, when Jackson felt that the actor was too young for the part.
However, had history taken a different turn, then Aragorn may well have been played by Nicolas Cage.
In a new interview with Newsweek, Cage has revealed that he was offered the part by Peter Jackson, but had to turn the role down.
"There were different things going on in my life at the time that precluded me from being able to travel and be away from home for three years", he explained. Although he can see the upside of not...

All Sallow’s Eve: Edel Gets Stuck in the Cage
For those who had a modicum of hope that German director’s Uli Edel‘s Canadian production of Nicolas Cage horror thriller Pay the Ghost would be more serviceable than its inane title would suggest, abandon hope all ye who enter here. Based on a novella by Tim Lebbon and adapted by Dan Kay (who last penned the 2007 indie yokel horror film Timber Falls), it’s one of those unfortunate genre cheapies that takes itself too seriously to be appreciated even for a bit of camp value—a missed opportunity considering Cage is headlining.

While Nicolas Cage has expressed a desire to work with Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino —I surely hope that comment has reached the ears of those filmmakers— he has learned the hard way about opportunity knocking and not answering the call. These days, Nicolas Cage makes the kind of the movies that open in a handful of cinemas before disappearing into the nether regions of whatever VOD service you use. Did you see "The Runner" or "Pay The Ghost"? Did you even hear about them? Didn't think so. But every now and then Cage still shows a flicker of his past glory, in doing projects like David Gordon Green's "Joe" or Oliver Stone's upcoming "Snowden." And the actor still has a couple of major directors on his bucket list that he'd like to get on set with. Read More: Watch: First Trailer For Oliver Stone's 'Snowden' Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley & Nicolas Cage "I would love to work with Paul Thomas Anderson. Nicolas Cage started acting in 1981 and hasn't stopped since. Despite some of his more out-there performances, Nicolas Cage is actually a pretty chilled-out guy. He's a bit of a homebody who prefers handing out candy to neighborhood trick-or-treaters on Halloween versus going to some big, flashy costume party. His latest horror film, Pay the Ghost, sort of feels that way, too, in that it relies more on atmosphere and mood than jump-out-of-your-seat scares. The film, which tracks one man's search for his son after he goes missing during a...

The confounding career of Nicolas Cage has, at this point, surely been the focus of hundreds of graduate theses, attempting to explain away the pile of shockingly disastrous, straight-to-vod films that he churns out every year, and reconcile with the fact that the man is still a superstar — despite the ubiquitous knowledge that he’s become a sort of scenery chewing ham. However, from time to time, the Oscar winner (a tag all of his movies still proudly tout) makes films like “Joe,” where he actually acts, in a movie with characters and complexities and depth. And, the truth is, with the right material Cage can still be interesting as a performer. Which makes just about every film of far lesser quality, all that more painful to watch. Like, for instance, “Pay The Ghost,” a decidedly B-movie supernatural thriller that blatantly looks to capitalize on the coming Halloween season. Cage...
