The animated film is based on the tale of Dmitriy Mamin-Sibiryak "About the brave hare - long ears, slanting eyes, short tail" from the collection "Alyonushka's fairy tales".

In the mid-1990s, the film was released in the VHS-collection of the best Soviet cartoons Studio PRO Video and the Soyuz studio in the cartoons collection of the Soyuzmultfilm studio.
In the mid-2000s, the animation was released on DVD of the Close-up film and video association as part of the cartoon tale "Tales of Russian Writers" (Release 1).
