Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) would not commit to accepting the outcome of the 2024 presidential election in a new interview. The South Carolina senator is on former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential shortlist.
On Sunday, Meet the Press host Kristen Welker asked Scott, “You voted to certify the election results of 2020. It’s the opposite of what you said and did after 2020. Why would you want to be on a ticket with someone where there’s such a fundamental difference?”
“There is clear facts here,” Scott replied. “President Trump himself said he expects this election to be fair. He expects it to be honest. And he expects to win. That’s what the presidential candidate should expect. And I expect the exact same thing. And frankly, the American people agree with him. This is an issue that is not an issue. So I’m not going to make it an issue.

A wooded setting, two characters, and conflicting values are the basis for Manami Ikemoto's clever short film “Hunting Results.” Ikemoto primarily works as an editor and creates films that detail the behind-the-scenes process in filmmaking. Here, he shines as a director in his first major project since his graduation movie, “Bad Trip.” With a low budget and two actors, he explores ideas of evolving perspectives and people who stand by old-fashioned notions.
Hunting Results is screening at Skip City International D-Cinema Festival
In the story, a married couple is out on a hunting trip. The husband, Naotaro, is overbearing and excessively stands by patriarchal values, while the wife, Yuko, is laid back and open-minded. Naotaro is deeply bothered that his daughter, Misako, is gay and takes out his frustrations on his spouse. Yet, Yuko stands up for herself, and the couple's complicated marriage and beliefs are explored in their journey into the woods.

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.
Watch the “Barry” season 4 trailer:
Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. Candy picks up an ax, whacks her rival over 40 times, and then claims self-defense. The new...

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

"Cocaine Bear" is barely (bear-ly?) a movie. It's instead a series of sight-gags and CGI-gore-filled pratfalls strung together by the loosest of narratives. Basically, there's one thing going on here, over and over again: a bear does cocaine and kills people. Lather, rinse, repeat, throw in some digital blood. And you know what? That's probably going to be fine for most viewers. The marketing for the film has played up the humor and turned this into more of a meme than a movie. Will you laugh at the uber-silliness on display here? Probably! Will you also come away wishing the film wasn't so damn middling? Possibly!
Boasting that it's based on "true events," "Cocaine Bear" sets itself up quickly: its the 1980s, and a drug courier drops a ton of cocaine out of a plane while flying over a small town in Georgia. This part of the story is indeed true,...

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

The last time I interviewed Andrew Bujalski, he’d thrown a number of viewers for a loop with Results, his gym-set, quasi-romantic comedy starring Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders. The overt weirdness of Computer Chess was one thing, but Bujalski feinting at a mainstream-leaning movie with honest-to-goodness name actors, a perky score and the promise of two hot people hooking up for a happy ending was a proposition that seemed to fry the expectations of both veteran Bujalski viewers (who didn’t see it coming) and people who didn’t know his work at all (and didn’t get the normal romcom they expected). I’m firmly […]...

They call ’em “breastaurants” — those sports-bar-and-grills less known for their cuisine than their well-endowed waitresses poured into tight t-shirts and oh-so-suggestive shorts. If you’ve been to Hooters, or are aware of the concept behind this formerly popular pin-up-calendar-come-to-life chain, you know the business model. These places sell dudes a sanitized version of sex with a side of hot wings — or as a character says in Support the Girls, a fantasy fueled by “boobs, brews and big screens.” It’s why people come to Double Whammies, the movie’s fictional...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A rote disappointment. There is nothing shocking or even mildly unexpected here. But there is an ironic weakening of the power of the xenomorphs to terrify. I’m “biast” (pro): love Alien and Aliens

After the lo-fi Computer Chess and helping to bring some variety to the rom-com with Results, one of independent filmmaking’s most distinct voices, director Andrew Bujalski, is returning with his next film. Already shooting in August, Texas, the full cast and plot details have now been revealed for Support the Girls.
Haley Lu Richardson (recently fantastic in Edge of Seventeen and Columbus), Regina Hall, James Le Gros, Aj Michalka, Dylan Gelula, Shayna McHayle, Lea DeLaria, Jana Kramer, and Results star Brooklyn Decker round out the cast, according to Screen Daily.
Check out the synopsis below.
The plot centers on Lisa Conroy (Hall) who may not love managing the restaurant Double Whammies, but she loves her employees more than anything, not only Danyelle (McHale), and Maci (Richardson) her closest friends, but also her extended family. MaryAnn’s quick take… Commits the cardinal sin of cinema: it’s boring. Feels like two hours of highlights from a 20-episode miniseries that only hint at a rich story tapestry. I’m “biast” (pro): have enjoyed Ben Affleck’s previous directorial efforts

With his fourth film as director, Ben Affleck has finally produced a stinker. Live by Night fails because it commits the cardinal sin of cinema: it’s boring. Which isn’t a thing that should ever be true about a movie with speakeasies and flappers and tommy guns and gangsters in panama hats.

“The Holdouts,” a new web series raising money on Kickstarter, is an ode to what some have called vanishing New York. It’s the story of “a blue collar guy who just wants to get day-wasted for three dollars,” but every gin joint he used to haunt has turned into a Starbucks or a Duane Reade or a Bank of America. Created by Dan Menke and Stephen Girasuolo, Menke wrote the script specifically with stars Kevin Corrigan (“Goodfellas,” “The Departed”) and Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) in mind.
“Kevin and I for a while had been sending each other the Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York thing, bitching at four in the morning about something closing,” Menke said, speaking from his rent-controlled Williamsburg studio. “Being a native New Yorker as he is, the underlying theme of people being priced out and the struggle to try to stay here was definitely something Kevin connected with.” For years after meeting Corrigan, Menke wrote possible projects. “I would periodically get up the nerve to send them to him,” the writer said, “and he liked this one.”
Menke met Bartok when the actor appeared on his monthly variety show hosted by New York’s filthiest marionette, The Arty Need Show. Originally, the show was about two down and out actors — with a running gag that Corrigan would always get recognized for his role in “Goodfellas,” while Bartok got mistaken as someone’s cousin’s ex. “With the added backdrop of gentrification, the project has deepened exponentially,” said Bartok. “It gives it that meaning, that edge, that wow, this is relevant.”

Though he may be less recognizable than Corrigan, Bartok cut his teeth with bit parts in classics like “The Fisher King,” and “School Ties.” More recently, he has written and produced two features; “The Cake Eaters,” with Kristin Stewart and Bruce Dern, which won best feature at The Stony Brook Film Festival in 2008, and “Fall to Rise,” starring Daphne Rubin-Vega.
The gentrification subject is particularly relevant to Bartok, whose artist mother moved him to Soho when he was eleven. “We moved to Soho when it was bodegas and art galleries, that kind of ‘After Hours’ Martin Scorsese Soho, and over 20 years I watched it become this kind of Euro mall.” Bartok was a Soho holdout until five years ago, when he moved to the Fort Greene neighborhood in Brooklyn. “You couldn’t leave the house on weekends,” he said. “There was no neighborhood anymore.”
The series has a bit of an “Odd Couple” feel, with Bartok playing the naïve newbie and Corrigan schooling his character on the real New York. The team is hoping the five-minute episodes will gain momentum like the hit web series “High Maintenance,” and get picked up for television.
Why are such accomplished film and television actors turning to web content? According to Bartok, “these days, just business wise, when you have major movie stars doing pilot after pilot, and you’re competing with Tony winners for one episode of ‘Elementary,’ you’re like wow, this is it, it truly is an actor’s life.”
It almost sounds as tough as say, holding out on a New York apartment.
“The Holdouts” is produced by Savin Rock Entertainment. Help get it made by contributing on Kickstarter.

The 31st Independent Spirt Awards took place this Saturday, February 27 with the fiendishly talented and hilarious Kate McKinnon & Kumail Nanjiani co-hosting the event. Take a look at their parody of one of this year’s best films Room below. The show, as in years past, aligned with the Academy Awards in some moments, but also served to do what the Oscars can’t, or won’t in others. Perhaps that’s just as it should be. Brie Larson won for Best Female Lead for Room, and is very likely to win the Academy Award for Best Actress tomorrow night. However, Spotlight, which won Best Feature, Director, and Screenplay at the Spirit Awards is in a three way race with The Revenant and The Big Short for the top prize at the Oscars. Though it’s likely to take Best Screenplay there as well. Typically, the Academy favors flashier films, so...

Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" was the big winner at the 25th Gotham Independent Film Awards. The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the child molestation in the Catholic church took home the Best Feature and Screenplay trophies. I love this film! It's ripe for melodrama but McCarthy wisely avoided that!
Another film I love that won big at the Gotham Awards is Sean Baker's "Tangerine." It took home the Audience award with Mya Taylor winning the Breakthrough Actor trophy.

Todd Haynes is in the running for best director and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in contention for best female lead alongside Room’s Brie Larson as Carol earned six 2016 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.
Besides the more predictable contenders like Carol, Spotlight and Room, there was plenty of love for Tangerine, shot on an iPhone, and Beasts Of No Nation from Netflix, whose day-and-date release (and what that portends) infuriated large swathes of the exhibition sector but has clearly impressed critics.

The nominations for the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, giving boosts to several films' Oscars chances.
"Carol" led the pack with six nominations, including nods in most of the major categories (Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay), and two Best Lead Actress nominations for its headlining duo, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It was followed by Netflix flick "Beasts of No Nation," which scored five nominations in the big categories (Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Male) as well as the technical ones (Best Cinematography, Best Editing).
As TheWrap notes, "Beasts" nominations have helped secure it some serious consideration come Oscars time. But another big surprise was the small number of nominations for "Room," considered by many to be a Best Picture contender at the Academy Awards. It was left off the Spirit Awards's Best Feature list, though it did score a Best Female Lead nomination for Best Actress Oscar frontrunner Brie Larson.

Todd Haynes' "Carol" is shaping up to be the movie to beat this awards season. Based on Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt, the romantic drama stars Cate Blanchett as an older, married woman who is developing some strong feelings towards a seasonal shopgirl played by Rooney Mara. And the actresses may have to prepare their acceptance speeches! "Carol" leads the pack of nominees for the 31st Independent Spirit Awards!
I'm also very happy that "Tangerine" by Sean Baker received 4 nods for Best Feature, Director, Female Lead (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez), and Supporting Female for Mya Taylor. shot mostly on iPhone, this small-budget wonder is truly what the Independent Spirit is all about!

In its 31st year, the Film Independent Spirt Awards showcase the best that modest (and, occasionally, lower budget) filmmaking has to offer annually. This year, it’s little surprise the the stellar Carol is leading the pack with six nominations, while Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation are close behind with five each. On the actual smaller scale of productions, the iPhone-shot drama Tangerine picked up a heft four nominations, a film that, alongside Anomalisa and the aforementioned titles, rounds out their Best Feature category.

As 2015 winds down, like most cinephiles, we’re looking to get our hands on the titles that may have slipped under the radar or simply gone unseen. With the proliferation of streaming options, it’s thankfully easier than ever to play catch-up, and to assist with the process, we’re bringing you a rundown of the best titles of the year available to watch.
Curated from the Best Films of 2015 So Far list we published for the first half of the year, it also includes films we’ve enjoyed the past few months and some we’ve recently caught up on. This is far from a be-all, end-all year-end feature (that will come at the end of the year), but rather something that will hopefully be a helpful tool for readers to have a chance to seek out notable, perhaps underseen, titles from the year.
Note that we’re going by U.

Nabbing Best Actress, Screenplay, Breakthrough Director and Feature noms, Marielle Heller’s Diary of a Teenage Girl leads all Gotham Award nominations with four, while Carol is technically tied with a foursome of mentions as well. With a pre-win (Directors Tribute) accompanied by a trio of noms in the Best Feature, Screenplay and Actress categories, Todd Haynes’ drama will likely find xeroxed nom mentions for both the Indie Spirits and Oscars.
While Rick Alverson’s Entertainment and Sebastien Silva’s Nasty Baby are noticeably absent in what some consider a backhanded compliment of a ceremony, the noms for this year’s Gothams do have some wholeheartedly merited double nom mentions for the Safdie Bros.’ Heaven Knows What, Sean Baker’s Tangerine, Bill Pohlad’s Love & Mercy and Josh Mond’s James White. Kicking off the onslaught of awards this year, as always, is the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Usually a strong slate highlighting some of the year’s most overlooked films, 2015 is no different as The Diary of a Teenage Girl leads the pack with four nominations. Close behind is Carol and Tangerine with three each overall.
Other players in the category of Best Feature include Spotlight and Heaven Knows What, while some of my other favorite films of the year, including Listen to Me Marlon, The Mend, James White, Results, and Mistress America, were recognized. With a ceremony set for November 30, check out the full list below thanks to Variety.

Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson)
Wes Anderson’s leap through the animated realm was a key moment that shifted his filmic characterization toward metaphysical poignancy, thus making way for Moonrise Kingdom, an impressionistically stylized portrait of a pre-Vietnam adolescent bliss. It’s not just Pierret Le Fou for children, but a story about the recreation of storytelling, appropriating aesthetics from low and high arts to burn memories of innocent times as a protection against the fears of adulthood, portrayed here as a melancholic,...

“So, you want to talk about the weather, or what’s happening with this humidity? Just kidding.” Cobie Smulders knows that the topic of conversation isn’t quotidian chitchat for an interview—though she’s great at it—when she's here to talk about one of the numerous movies she’s been in this year. 2015 has seen Smulders appear in two Sundance breakouts: Andrew Bujalski’s “Results,” and Kris Swanberg’s “Unexpected,” the latter of which is today's topic of conversation. Smulders is also in a little film you might have heard of called “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” so, there's plenty to discuss. “Unexpected,” based on some of Swanberg's personal experiences, tells the story of a friendship between two expectant mothers, Chicago teacher Samantha (Smulders) and her student, Jasmine (Gail Bean). In my review from Sundance, I noted, “Smulders embodies the anxieties of women who want to retain their identities...

Cobie Smulders is not accustomed to being singled out. The How I Met Your Mother star and Marvel universe apparatchik tends to operate in the company of others, which is why she found herself somewhat stricken with panic earlier this year at the Sundance premiere of her latest film, Unexpected, which opens in theaters and on demand this Friday. "Oh shit," she recalls thinking. "I'm in every scene."
It's true, she is — though it's about time. Fans of her CBS sitcom, which concluded its nine-season run last year, might agree...

Baby Boom: Swanberg’s Pregnancy Drama Plays it Safe
For a glaring portrait of the subtle audacity of subconscious privilege unawares, look no further than Kris Swanberg’s latest feature, Unexpected, an indie Sundance premiered drama treading the expected tropes of unplanned pregnancy. Its set-up initially poses a provocative juxtaposition, a tale of two surprise pregnancies dealt to two very different women in one of the Midwest’s most progressive cities, Chicago. Told from the perspective of its white, high functioning and hopelessly granola lead, whose life intersects with a black, socioeconomically compromised student in a similar situation promises to be an invigorating examination of taken-for-grantedness. Except, at every possible opportunity, Swanberg’s screenplay (co-written by actress Megan Mercier) backs away from controversial points, instead reinforcing the frustrating obliviousness of its lead character. And that’s not even addressing the narrative’s conservative reinforcement of teen mothers giving birth...

While not all that unusual in a country such as France, we can add the name of Clea DuVall to the stream of under 40 actresses making the move behind the camera. Best known for recent turns in American Horror Story and Argo, has lined up quite the ensemble for her directorial debut. The Wrap reports that Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Vincent Piazza, Jason Ritter, Ben Schwartz, Alia Shawkat and Cobie Smulders are the main players in the untitled project. Sev Ohanian (co-produced Fruitvale Station) and Burn Later Productions’ Paul M. Bernon and Sam Slater (Results) will produce. Mel Eslyn (Lamb) and David Bernon will executive produce with DuVall. Look for the production to begin sometime soon with a pegged 2016 festival release.

We would all like to be in better shape, I’m thinking. Even people who work out every day always seem to want to do more to be healthier, to get into better physical condition. And goodness knows obesity and sedentary lifestyles seem to be the norm for a great many people in this country. I have to count myself among the out of shape but wanting to do something about it. I have gained and lost the same 40 or 50 pounds so many times in my life it’s now difficult to lose that weight and keep it off. I have a gym membership but rarely use it and can’t seem to find the time to get back to the gym on a regular basis.
Maybe I should get a personal trainer? Which leads me to Results, a remarkable and good hearted movie about personal trainers, a new client...
