For the past seven years, Netflix has been gradually releasing a collection of interactive, choose-your-own-story games within the Netflix Ui, known as Interactive Specials. According to a recent report, we may not see many more of these, if any, in the future.
Netflix began rolling out this feature in 2017, and to date, 28 of them have been released, with the majority targeting family-oriented audiences. IP such as Carmen Sandiego, The Boss Baby, Barbie, Johnny Test, and Jurassic World have all featured interactive specials, along with Netflix’s own array of shows receiving this treatment, including Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and We Lost Our Human.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was undoubtedly a major breakthrough for this technology, targeting adults and pushing the feature to its limits with numerous branching storylines. Monday Am Writethru: There were two major new entries this weekend at the international box office, one local (Tamil thriller Leo: Bloody Sweet) and one from Hollywood. Starting with the latter, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon from Apple, Paramount and Imperative Entertainment had a big opening with $21 million in 63 offshore markets and No. 1s in 24 of those including France, Germany, Australia, Spain, Netherlands and Switzerland. The global bow, factoring in its strong domestic opening, was $44M; great for a period movie with a long running time and at a moment when talent could not promote it due to the actors strike.
The international launch, excluding previews and on a like-for-like basis, is on par with Ford V Ferrari, 7% ahead of The Imitation Game, 14% above Captain Phillips and 25% over House of Gucci. Positive word of mouth has it positioned for a strong run.

Updated: Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour may have missed the century mark in regards to a domestic opening, but the 12x Grammy winner was always guaranteed that number worldwide, with AMC reporting this Am that the Sam Wrench-directed concert pic has racked up $126M-$130M. The international box office opening is estimated at $31M-$33M. AMC is reporting a range à la North America; this the first time the circuit has handled a global theatrical-day-and-date release of this magnitude. Note, we never saw this hitting $200M WW; overseas was always going to be light and at this point remains at the lower-end of expectations.
AMC is calling the domestic opening between $95M-$97M today, however, rival studios see it lower at $94.3M. At the latter level, it’s the second best opening for October Stateside. Anything north of Joker‘s $96.2M stateside debut is an October domestic opening record.

Heavy spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" to follow.
"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was a miracle of filmmaking, a movie that shouldn't work -- it has too many characters, drastically different visual styles throughout, and a story that is simultaneously too kid-friendly for adults yet too adult for the demographic normally associated with American animation. Yet not only did work, but the film became a smash hit (joining our list of the best movies of all time). More importantly, it proved that animated movies could look like stylized concept art and still find an audience, a big one at that. Since then, we've seen many other movies experiment with their own unique visual styles and with stories that are bolder and more mature than, say, "Minions" or "The Boss Baby."

Steve Buscemi has been in some of the best films and television series out there, from "Reservoir Dogs" to "Boardwalk Empire." His work spans a multitude of genres, but many of his most notable roles have a single through-line: violence. Buscemi has been cast as many a villainous character in gritty crime dramas, but in more recent years, the actor has moved largely into voice acting for children's animated features like "Boss Baby" or comedic shows like "Miracle Workers" and "Bupkis." What triggered this major career change for Buscemi? As it turns out, one of the best television shows of all time caused the actor to lose his appetite for on-screen bloodshed.
Although he had only a minor recurring role in "The Sopranos," Buscemi was instrumental in the series. Not only was his character a major part of Tony and Christopher's past and one of the show's best characters,...

It seemed like the end of the road for the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
The popular kids franchise had inspired a half-dozen movies of declining quality, with the live-action 2016 adventure “Out of the Shadows” suffering from the kind of withering reviews and bad box office returns that derail a film series.
But Paramount and Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins and Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation president Ramsey Naito had an offbeat idea for how they could make the Turtles cool again.
That involved tapping Seth Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg, the duo behind “Superbad” and “This is the End,” to give the characters an adolescent flair. It didn’t matter that the pair’s main experience with animation, the very R-rated “Sausage Party,” was made for moviegoers of voting age and not for the pre-teens who are the biggest fans of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael.

Nearly four years after its last new episode aired, Suits is having a moment in the streaming world.
The former USA Network series set a viewing time record for an acquired series in the week of June 26-July 2. Suits had 3.14 billion minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen, easily surpassing the previous mark of 2.49 billion minutes for Manifest (before it became a Netflix original) in June 2021. The show became available on Netflix June 23; it also streams on Peacock.
The huge tally for Suits dwarfed the two other shows that topped the billion-minute mark for the week: The debut of The Witcher’s third season on Netflix pushed that show to 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, and The Bear grew by 18 percent week to week to 1.01 billion minutes. The latter is the second Hulu series (and the first produced by FX) to break the billion-minute threshold for a single week, after The Handmaid’s Tale.

On the VOD charts, action rules. A recent price drop to $5.99 has propelled “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) to continued #1 positions at iTunes and Google Play, while revenue-ranking Vudu kept “Fast X” (Universal) in the top position. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal), price now reduced to $19.99 (including download) placed #2 at all three sites.
New entry “The Machine” (Sony), an action comedy starring Bert Kreischer, here adapting his semi-biographical stand-up routine, is #3 at Vudu at $19.99 while placing on a three charts. It hit home viewing after its fourth weekend in theaters, where it managed only $10 million in gross.
After a recent spate of theatrical releases dominating Netflix’s top ten movie chart, their home-grown titles took six of the slots this week. “Extraction 2” repeats at #1, with their usual eclectic mix taking other slots.

Fans are saying farewell to Manifest and Never Have I Ever.
For the week of June 5 to June 11, the series dominated Netflix’s English-language series list. Manifest as Season 4, Part 2 took the top spot with 78.15M hours viewed in the week after it debuted on June 2. The enthusiasm surrounding the final episodes also boosted Season 1 back into the Top 10 with 18.18M hours viewed.
Devi Vishwakumar’s senior year was met with near equal excitement, as Never Have I Ever Season 4jumped to No. 2 on the list following its June 8 debut. In the first few days of release, Season 4 racked up 76.21M hours viewed. It would not be surprising to see Never Have I Ever tally another successful week during the next measurement window, when it will have been available for the entire seven-day span.
Those new releases pushed Fubar to No. 3, though the series still drew 42.28M hours viewed after two weeks at No.

Universal executives last week made a statement about how lucrative early PVOD availability has been for the studio. Then on Friday, they made a statement suggesting how accepted the practice has become.
“Fast X,” with an investment approaching $500 million in production and marketing costs, became available on domestic platforms for $19.99 rental ($24.99 purchase). That was 22 days after it debuted in theaters, and grossed $67 million its opening weekend.
Hold on there — wasn’t the oft-repeated understanding that any Universal film that opened over $50 million had at least a 31 day window? This was widely reported when the studio came to an understanding with major exhibitors in 2020 (which included the latter having some participation in the revenue).
That has consistently been the minimum case over the past three years. And recently “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” an even bigger grossing film, had a 41 day window, 10 days longer than normal.
Neither Universal nor exhibition sources would comment on this.

In February 2013, Dreamworks Animation Television teamed with Netflix on its first-ever children’s and family series, Turbo Fast. Just four months later, the studio and streamer would unveil a multiyear content deal — 300 hours of exclusive original, first-run content.
The pact was the official beginning of the television animation studio and at that time, the largest content deal in the streamer’s history. One of the most significant signs of the rise and permanence of the streaming era, the deal heralded a new age for the kids and family content industry.
Dreamworks Animation TV and current Dwa president Margie Cohn’s team would spend the next decade steering the studio through that and an NBC Universal acquisition, producing more than 2,100 episodes of animated programming across 43 series and partnering with Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Peacock, Amazon and free-to-air broadcasters around the globe.

After almost a month streaming on Netflix, Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” continues to reign over the global top 10 chart for the week of May 29. Read on for this week’s analysis.
This week “The Mother” was once again the #1 English movie across the globe with 16.5 million hours viewed, but it also entered Netflix’s all-time chart as the eighth most-watched English language film on the streamer with 229.3 million viewing hours. It was only the number-one movie in Jordan, of all places, but it remained in the top 10 for 89 countries total.
The rest of that top 10 was made up of movies from other studios that previously had theatrical releases with DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby” taking second place with 10.6 million hours viewed, followed by “Missing” with 8.1 million viewing hours, and even Mark Wahlberg‘s 2007 action movie “Shooter” placed in the top five with 7.5 million viewing hours.

It’s official, The Mother is one of Netflix’s most popular films of all time.
The Jennifer Lopez action thriller has continued to dominate the streamer since it debuted over Mother’s Day weekend. It tallied another 16.48M hours viewed for the week of May 29 to June 4, making it the most-watched film on the service for the fourth week in a row. With 229.30M total hours viewed, it is now No. 8 on the Most Popular English Film List, replacing Purple Hearts and bumping The Irishman off the list entirely.
The film still has time to make its way up the most popular list. Its 28-day premiere measurement window will end on June 11, and it is already inching fairly close to its next two opponents on the list — Extraction with 231.3M hours viewed and The Adam Project with 233.2M hours viewed.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) has grossed triple what “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) has in theaters. But for home viewers, the latest Keunu Reeves action sequel booted the Nintendo game animated film out of all #1 VOD rankings after only one week.
Impressively, this was not only on iTunes and Google Play (which rank by number of transactions) but also Vudu, which tallies by revenue. “Wick” costs the standard $19.99 to view, while “Smb” is $24.99 ($29.99 to own). That suggests at that site at least it had a clear lead for the week. Meantime, “Smb” is a unanimous #2.
At Netflix, the success of recent Sony titles continues to be seen among their most viewed movies. The studio, lacking its own streaming site, now regularly sends its films there a few months after release. “Missing” continues at #1, but the surprise this week has been the success of “The Son.”

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.

Thanks to "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" and its remarkable box office run, the "Shrek"-verse is suddenly looking more alive than it has in more than a decade. Rest assured, this hasn't gone unnoticed by DreamWorks Animation, which is already well into development on "Shrek 5" -- a project we've been hearing rumblings about since at least 2017, back when the sequel's then-writer Michael McMullers ("The Boss Baby") referred to it as a "pretty big reinvention" of what's come before.
During an interview with Variety, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri -- who's also a creative partner at DreamWorks Animation -- confirmed the intention is to bring back Mike Myers as the voice of the titular lovable, smelly ogre for the as-yet-untitled new "Shrek" movie, along with his co-stars Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy as Fiona and Donkey, respectively. Although Meledandri cautioned that "talks are starting now" with the original "Shrek" cast,...

DreamWorks Animation is taking a page out of Disney’s remake book. The animated film franchise “How to Train Your Dragon” will receive a new live action film from Universal Pictures, set for worldwide release on March 14, 2025.
The film will be written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the three animated “How to Train Your Dragon” films released between 2010 and 2019. It will be DeBlois’ live action narrative film debut, after directing the “Dragon” trilogy, Disney’s beloved 2002 animated feature “Lilo & Stitch,” and 2007 documentary “Heima.”
Based loosely on the book series by Cressida Cowell, the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise is set in mythical Berk: a viking village where the residents train to fight and kill attacking dragons. Main character Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel in the original movies) is the awkward outcast son of chieftain Stoick (Gerard Butler), and struggles to prove himself worthy of serving as a warrior for the village.

Being a millennial, I cannot escape the ever present nostalgia for "Shrek" around me. That first film was one I watched so much growing up, but I have not been able to indulge in the admiration for the 2001 animated film, which has become this weird blend of total sincerity and complete irony. Its brand of cynicism and dirt brown patina just do not appeal to me now that i'm no longer at a single-digit age. But that isn't stopping anyone around my age from continuing to love this movie. Its appeal has lasted so long that this past year we got a sequel to the spinoff of the original "Shrek" series with "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," which has somewhat quietly made quite a lot of money.
The last film in the proper mainline franchise, "Shrek Forever After," was released all the way back in 2010. Based on that title...

While the first trailer for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” focused on Jack Black’s King Koopa/Bowser and the visual splendor of the Mushroom Kingdom, this second look offers up a better, longer look at Mario himself. The spot offers a mix of high fantasy adventure tropes and IP-specific beats like Mario being thrashed by Donkey Kong, Mario wearing the raccoon suit and a final beat featuring essentially a massive game of “Mario Kart.” “Super Smash Bros.” may have to wait until the sequel.
That closer look includes Chris Pratt’s preemptively controversial vocals, which mostly sound like, well, Chris Pratt playing a blue collar plumber who embarks on a fantastical adventure. The notion of Chris Pratt voicing Mario is one of those things where the perpetually online rant and whine but general audiences either don’t care or approve of the choice because they like the actor.

“Shrek” was the film that put DreamWorks Animation on the map and, for better or worse, convinced an entire industry to switch their attention from the old world charm of hand-drawn children’s films to the modern frontier of CGI animation. The sequel, “Shrek 2,” introduced something even more important: The Antonio Banderas-voiced, Zorro-inspired Puss in Boots, a swashbuckling ginger cat with a tiny sword, a smart pair of boots, and an adorable pair of enormous kitten eyes. He got his own movie in 2011 after the main Shrek quadrilogy was finished, and its long-awaited follow-up, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” finally debuts this year.
Puss in Boots (Banderas) has spent a lifetime performing daring deeds and laughing in the face of death. Eight lifetimes, in fact: after a particularly heroic battle, Puss finds out that he’s used up almost all of his nine lives, and only has one left.

The day has finally arrived: Netflix has ads.
On Thursday, the streaming giant officially released its “Basic with Ads” tier in the United States. The cheap(er) subscription plan includes four to five minutes of ads per hour, with each ad being about 15-30 seconds long. These spots play both before titles and in the middle of films and TV episodes. There’s certain exceptions; when new Netflix original films coming to the streamer, like “Knives Out 2,” all ads play before the movie starts. However, not all movies have the ad-tier option.
Four of the movies on the streamer’s current Top 10 are unavailable on the plan. Those titles still appear in searches on the ad tier, but they’re marked with a red lock icon in the right-hand of its thumbnail. Clicking on an unavailable film opens up a window prompting the user to change their subscription in order to access the content.

This article will contain spoilers for the ending(s) of the 2018 film "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch."
In 2018, director David Slade and screenwriter Charlie Brooker (co-showrunner of "Black Mirror") teamed up with Netflix to try out something that hadn't been attempted too many times in the past. Using a kind of basic "branching video" technology, their "Black Mirror" feature film "Bandersnatch" could be watched as a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style interactive experience, letting a viewer decide how the story would progress. About ten minutes of the film would elapse before the main character Stefan (Fionn Whitehead) was faced with a decision, major or minor. On the bottom of the screen, two buttons would appear, and the viewer could dictate Stefan's choice using their remote control. Fittingly, the plot of the movie involved 1984-era computer programmers attempting to build their very own Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style video game, based on his late mother's fictional novel "Bandersnatch."
Patient viewers who watched through "Bandersnatch" several times,...
