Epic Pictures 10. Benny Loves You (2019)
Starting at the lighter end of our horror spectrum is Benny Loves You. Imagine if your Teddy Ruxpin turned into Chucky. This film proves that adulthood can be terrifying, and getting rid of childhood toys could literally be the death of you. It’s dark comedy gold with a plushy, murderous twist.

Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). Over the course of last year, I think formally reviewed over 60 films, did interviews for at least 20 other projects beyond those reviewed films, relaunched Indie Horror Month in April, and even did a ton of other features and articles on Daily Dead as well.
Suffice to say, 2021 was pretty darned busy for me on the writing front and because there was so much content that I absolutely adored, I decided that for my favorites list this time around, I wanted to do things a bit differently because if I dive into every single thing...

Hey everyone! I’ve been playing catch-up on a handful of indie horror movies over the last few weeks, and here are my thoughts on two films I recently had the opportunity to watch—Benny Loves You from Karl Holt and Ryan Kruger’s Fried Barry.
Benny Loves You: When I first read the initial premise of Benny Loves You—a man’s childhood toy becomes sentient and embarks on a killing spree—I knew I was absolutely all in for this wacky little movie, and it didn’t disappoint. Brimming with ambition, ingenuity, and heaps of slash-tastic fun, Benny Loves You feels exactly like the type of movie I would have made with my toys back as a horror youngin, but writer/director/star Karl Holt does a much better job than I ever could have dreamt up, resulting in a wickedly funny horror comedy that also has...

How will Benny, the vengeful stuffed animal and star of the upcoming horror-comedy Benny Loves You, live up to the long, bloody legacy of killer dolls? Forget Chucky, you’ve got Talking Tina on The Twilight Zone, the Zuni Doll in Trilogy of Terror, the ventriloquist dummies of Dead Silence, and more. Well, Benny shows some promise in a new Benny Loves You clip, […]

A delightfully daft microbudget slapstick gem, Karl Holt's Benny Loves You is a raucous toy-gone-wild portrait of a man desperately fighting to grow up is a ton of fun. Largely stuck together with tape scraps and chewing gum, Holt's feature debut is an anarchic blast of I-don't-wanna-grow-up mayhem about a man desperately fighting to put away childish things and move forward. Unfortunately, one of those childish things has other ideas. Jack (Holt) is still living with his parents in his mid-30's, and by the look of his bedroom - walls still plastered with pop culture posters and shelves overflowing with action figures - he has no intention of changing that. He's underperforming at his job as a toy designer, constantly outshined by a snobbish robotics...

Whether it be actual toys or movies about them coming to life and killing people, they don’t make ’em like they used to. While the “Child’s Play” and “Puppet Master” franchises aren’t exactly rife with masterpieces, their pleasures are less guilty than those afforded by the genre’s latest installment: “Benny Loves You,” an English horror comedy liable to make audiences laugh far more than it scares them. Mostly, though, it just borders on boring. Aside from the murderous Benny himself, the film doesn’t add much to its gory genre.
The film centers on Jack, who also narrates. A 35-year-old pushover still living at home and struggling to advance in his career as a toy designer, he initially feels like an attempt to recapture the cheeky relatability of Simon Pegg’s “Shaun of the Dead” everyman. But as with his eponymous creation (the talking toy’s cheerful...

Horror movies have a long, time-honored tradition of killer dolls. Chucky is arguably the most famous, but the list goes on and on, from Talking Tina on The Twilight Zone, to the Zuni Doll in Trilogy of Terror, to the ventriloquist dummies of Dead Silence, and beyond. Now we can add Benny to the list. In Benny Loves You, a […]

"As long as you have him by your side, nothing can ever hurt you." "Not even the demons in the hallway?" Epic Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie horror comedy called Benny Loves You, marking the feature directorial debut of British filmmaker Karl Holt, who also co-stars in the film. This played at last year's FrightFest and Sitges Film Festival, and also stopped by the New York City Horror Film Festival a few years ago. We've seen evil animatronics, and evil dolls, now it's time for an evil plush toy. Jack is desperately trying for a new start in life, but when he throws away his childhood bear Benny, it's a move that can only end in death. Benny doesn't want to be thrown away! So tread carefully... The film stars Karl Holt, Claire Cartwright, George Collie, James Parsons, Lydia Hourihan, and David Wayman. This definitely does...
