The Requin. The Reef: Stalked. The Black Demon. Now Something in the Water. I’m reaching my breaking point with shark attack movies that are too distracted by other plotlines to deliver on their promise: shark attacks. Hayley Easton Street’s Something in the Water might be the biggest offender listed, taking roughly thirty minutes until the first shark-related incident, then another fifteen(ish) minutes for the first of frustratingly few substantial shark spottings. Cat Clarke’s screenplay tries to establish poignant storytelling about hate crimes, broken relationships, and debilitating traumas, but in doing so, forgets about the massive shark plastered all over the film’s marketing materials. Street and Clarke aim to elevate shark cinema with emotional throughlines, but sink the entire project with an alarmingly imbalanced approach.

The thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but it was recently bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. (Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release.) The release date shake-up isn’t slowing down The Woman in the Yard‘s momentum, though. Deadline reports that the project has just added another cast member: Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.
Hornsby joins the previously announced Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till in the cast. Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend is also in there.

Blake Lively was unrecognizable in her role as a grieving woman who seeks revenge in Reed Morano’s The Rhythm Section. Lively’s Bond-style film flopped really badly at the box office. During the filming of a scene in the film, Lively injured her hand, requiring surgery and shutting down the production for six months. The critics praised Lively’s performance, but her sacrifices were not enough to save the film from an embarrassing fate.
Blake Lively in The Rhythm Section
The poor marketing efforts of the film did not help its case after a thinly written plot. The film had the all-time worst opening weekend record for a film playing over 3000 screens. By the end of the second week, Lively’s film was pulled from 2955 screens.

Countless shark attack horror movies have flooded the market since Steven Spielberg changed the game with Jaws back in the 1970s, but the reality is that most of them aren’t very good. For every quality shark attack movie like Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows, there are about 100 imitators that have only really served to devalue the entire subgenre in their wake.
But every so often, we get a good one. And Netflix may have one of those on their hands with Under Paris, a shark attack horror movie from French filmmaker Xavier Gens.
Fresh off the just-released action movie Mayhem!, Xavier Gens (Frontiers, Cold Skin) is back this June with Under Paris, and Netflix has unleashed the official trailer this week.
Following in the grand tradition of Jaws, a celebration turns into a PR nightmare when a hungry shark comes to Paris. One shark. A whole lot of tasty humans.

In the talk about s*xual harassment in Hollywood, Blake Lively spoke up about her own experience. Even though she’s faced accusations herself, she’s shining a light on how misconduct is widespread in the entertainment biz. She shared a story about a makeup artist, highlighting the messed-up power dynamics behind the scenes.

What’s surprising is that, despite the accusations, the makeup artist got a thumbs-up from a producer manager in the form of a recommendation letter. This whole situation brings up concerns about accountability and support systems in the industry. It’s another voice saying things need to change.

“Black Adam” filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra has been hired by Amazon MGM Studios to direct a movie starring Emily Blunt as pioneering female detective Kate Warne.
Melissa Stack wrote the screenplay from a previous draft by Gustin Nash. The untitled film, described as a “propulsive action thriller,” centers around a real-life Sherlock Holmes-esque character. Kate Warne was the first female detective at the Pinkerton agency and, according to a release, paved the way for future women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Blunt, who will also produce the movie, hasn’t finalized her deal because of the actors strike, but conversations are expected to resume once the guild has a new pact.
Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia are producing via their company, Seven Bucks Productions. Kristina Sorensen is producing for With a K Productions. Kimberly Bialek will oversee for Seven Bucks Productions.

Plot: As part of her quest to become president of her sorority house, Emily adopts a three-toed sloth and makes it the house mascot. Unfortunately for her and her sorority sisters, this sloth is a homicidal maniac.
Review: There are so many “nature run amok” movies out there, particularly shark thrillers and killer croc (or gator) flicks, they can be easy to overlook and pass by. But every once in a while, something will be intriguing enough to stand out from the pack. 47 Meters Down, The Shallows, The Meg, Crawl, Cocaine Bear, etc. The latest to stand out from the pack, with both its title and concept, is director Matthew Goodhue’s Slotherhouse. A movie that mixes together the nature run amok and sorority house slasher sub-genres to very entertaining effect… and may be the first killer sloth movie. No study of film is complete without the inclusion of the shark. Cinema has long told stories of man’s eternal battle with monsters, real or otherwise. Yet over the decades, no animal has endured so thoroughly as that on-screen nemesis like the humble shark. There’s always time for a shark movie, including this summer with the release of Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2. Indeed, our very (mis)understanding of the creature is rooted in its movie history. Film has an incredible ability to reimagine the world around us, but its eternal insistence on turning the shark into a merciless killing machine for midnight movie scares has left a permanent, major scar. And it’s almost entirely thanks to one movie that not only changed Hollywood forever but left sharks with a serious case of bad PR.

Following the enormous critical and financial success in the local theaters, the release of “The Meg” in Chinese cinemas started a wave of similarly-produced creature features and animal-attack films to capitalize on its release. That has led to a steady stream of cheap, goofy creature features that remains popular churning out titles to this day which includes this one from 2021 that takes its influence from the Australian film “The Reef” from 2011 and “The Shallows” from 2017.

Around this time every year, I tend to enjoy putting on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In this household it’s as annual a hallmark of summer as warm breezes, smoking meat on the barbecue, and blasts of chlorine water. However, it is too easy to fall into the trap of thinking Spielberg had the first and last word in the sounds of shrieking at the beach.
In truth, there are many great summertime chillers that make your blood run cold, and the sand turn to ice between your toes, no matter how hot the temperature is. Hence why we here at Den of Geek have put our heads together to figure what are the absolute best beachside horror movies (other than the obvious one) that will make you a “lake person” for the rest of your life. Enjoy!

Under the sea, life is not better. Do you know what lives down there? Have you seen "The Shallows"? Or "Jaws"? Or countless other aquatic horror films? Disney's "The Little Mermaid" live-action update will lie to another generation of young moviegoers who should be terrified about what lurks under the surface leagues-deep. There's still an overwhelming percentage of ocean depths that humankind has not explored, with so many horrors left to encounter. In honor of "The Little Mermaid," let's highlight just one of those nightmares.
We all can agree "Jaws" is the best fin flick of all time, but what about second place? I'd argue that Jaume Collet-Serra's "The Shallows" is a snout's length ahead of the pack,...

Video games may be filled with mutant enemies and extraterrestrial terrors, but there’s something to be said about games that rely on existing creatures to scare unwitting players. While real world animals might seem tame compared to the imagined beasts of fiction, an evening watching Animal Planet will likely convince you that there’s nothing scarier than a real predator that has decided to make you its next meal.
And with so many ravenous creatures to choose from, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest animal attacks in gaming. After all, from deep sea predators to rabid bears, there are plenty of natural thrills to be found if you’re willing to look past the usual genre excesses.

Shark-attack horror movies are having a resurgence, and much of this is due to the surprising success of the 2017 movie 47 Meters Down. Two years after its release, a sequel was unveiled. Now that 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is on Netflix, more viewers are discovering the underwater adventure.
With a star-studded cast and incredible cinematography, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is a horror fan favorite. Fans who want to retrace the steps of the film’s cast can even visit some of the locations featured in 47 Meters Down: Uncaged — although they shouldn’t expect to see terrifying sharks.

All That Breathes (Shaunak Sen)
Move over, Sandra Bullock—there’s a new Bird Box in town. The only film to have collected prizes at both Sundance and Cannes, Shaunak Sen’s taut, tender documentary has a healing power that’s sourced straight from its subjects: two brothers in Delhi who have devoted their lives to saving the Black Kite—a majestic, medium-sized, hypercarnivorous raptor of the air—from going extinct in Delhi’s fatally-polluted skies. Set to the backdrop of India’s rising social turmoil and Islamophobia, the threatened and neglected state of this bird reflects the brothers’ reality in a place that doesn’t fully recognize their humanity. But that doesn’t stop them from operating. It seems nothing can.

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

Dwayne Johnson‘s long-gestating passion project, Black Adam, is in theaters now, and people are already lining up to weigh in on the latest superhero event for the Dceu. Jaume Collet-Serra directs from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. Johnson’s channeled all his mana into promoting Black Adam, saying the antihero character would change the “change the hierarcy” of superhero cinema. I’ve seen a handful of critics disagree with Johnson’s statement, but general audiences seem to be responding positively to the film.
Nearly 5,000 years after acquiring the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods and being imprisoned shortly after that, Black Adam returns to unleash his rage on the modern world. However, the Justice Society of America is there to keep him in check and possibly sway his outlook on who deserves punishment.

Box office juggernaut Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is DC’s Black Adam in the upcoming feature film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, The Shallows), which is coming to theaters on October 21, 2022. The film is being released with a family-safe “PG-13” rating attached to it, but it sounds like getting that rating from the MPA wasn’t exactly easy.
In a chat with Collider this week, producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia explain that the super-violent Black Adam was submitted multiple times in order to get its “PG-13” rating.
Garcia tells Collider, “We really wanted to make sure that we honored the character of Black Adam. One of the things he’s known for is his aggression and violence, and to do a Black Adam movie that didn’t have that just wouldn’t have been authentic. So we always went into this knowing that we were going to push it as far as we did.

The second season finale of ‘American Horror Stories’ gets pulled away by the tide and struggles to find its way back to a compelling conclusion.
“She needs to find her life again and get back to normal. We all do.”
There are some exceptional horror films that find fear within the unknown depths of the sea, whether it’s overt monster movies like Deep Rising, Underwater, or “The Raft” segment from Creepshow 2, or terrifying tales that are adjacent to the water like The Shallows. American Horror Story has more or less left underwater tales of woe alone even though a story that’s centered on the Loch Ness Monster or other aquatic Cryptids seems completely in line with the series’ agenda. “Lake,” the season finale of American Horror Stories’ second season, avoids a modern monster myth in favor of a somber meditation on grief and guilt. Jaume Collet-Serra has a fascinating filmography that gets more and more interesting as time goes on. His debut feature was the aughts horror "House of Wax" remake, but he's now at the helm of the DC superhero movie "Black Adam." While the general public may know him best for his films like the Dwayne Johnson-starring "Jungle Cruise" or the Liam Neeson action thrillers "Unknown," "Non-Stop," "Run All Night," and "The Commuter," to horror fans, he'll always be the man behind "Orphan" and "The Shallows." After his foray into the DC Extended Universe, Jaume Collet-Serra is returning to his thrilling roots with the new film "Carry On."
"Carry On" marks the first collaborative effort between Netflix and Amblin as part of the overall deal Amblin signed with the streaming giant last year. Tj Fixman was behind the screenplay's first draft, with Michael Green providing the finishing touches. No word yet...

Jason Bateman has booked his holiday travel.
The multi-hyphenate is scheduled to star opposite Taron Egerton in the new Netflix thriller “Carry On,” TheWrap has confirmed. The film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, a man who knows a thing about transportation-related terror thanks to “Non-Stop” and “The Commuter.”
Egerton plays a young Tsa agent who is blackmailed by a shadowy traveler (presumed to be the Bateman role) to let a dangerous package get through security (and onto a flight). And this happens, of course, during Christmas, which is already giving us “Die Hard 2” vibes. (The overall plot sounds like “Executive Decision” with a little “Red Eye” thrown in for good measure).
Tj Fixman wrote the first draft of the screenplay, with Michael Green doing the most recent polish. Dylan Clark will serve as producer. This is the first movie coming out of a recent Amblin/Netflix deal (which...

The one-location thriller is a tough nut to crack. When you trap your characters in one spot, you run the risk of the narrative growing stale and the pacing floundering. So how do you mix it up? You keep the audience (and the characters) on edge; you throw obstacles in the way, with things going from bad to worse to catastrophic. And you make us care about what happens to the trapped characters. "Fall" is a new entry in the one-location survivalist thriller, and it plays out a bit like "The Shallows" without a shark, and a bit like "The Descent" without underground...

Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners are teaming up on “Carry On,” an action thriller that will be the first film produced as part of a production deal announced between the two companies last year.
The film, a high-flying adventure, will star Taron Egerton of “Kingsman” and “Rocketman” fame and will be directed by “Jungle Cruise” filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra. The story follows Ethan Kopek, a young Tsa agent who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight. At a time when the friendly skies have never seemed less inviting, the movie could make air travel even less appealing.
Dylan Clark Productions will produce the film. It boasts a script by Tj Fixman, with additional writing by Michael Green. Executive producers include Holly Bario, Amblin’s president of production, who will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

And here we run into a major issue with American Carnage’s plotting. The raid is one of many called for under an executive order signed by Governor Haper Finn. Immigration policy and enforcement is a federal matter, an executive order by a state governor would have no force. The Sanderson sisters are back – again. In the first footage of “Hocus Pocus 2,” they’re looking to take the stage.
Once again, Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) have magically returned on Halloween thanks to a Salem resident lighting the Black Flame Candle. This time, a young girl named Becca (played by Whitney Peak) is the culprit. Becca is coming up on her 16th birthday, which, according to Sam Richardson’s magic store owner Gilbert, is the milestone at which new witches receive their powers. So while the young Dani Dennison (Thora Birch) faked being a witch back in the original “Hocus Pocus,” it appears that our hero could be the real thing this round. She’s certainly at least interested in toying with witchcraft.
