Souter lighthouse was the first in the world to be designed specifically to operate on alternating electric current. It opened in 1871. The lighthouse stands on Lizard Point but takes it's name from Souter Point a mile to the South - where it was originally intended to be built. When it was built on the higher Lizard Point the original name was kept to avoid confusion with the then recently opened Lizard lighthouse in Cornwall.
