...and nothing has changed in Rio.
I happened to visit Rio in 1989. I was in the US Navy and we were to spend a week in port. The city, streets and beaches were trashed... full of garbage and human feces. We had pulled into port just after Carnival and I thought that was the reason but soon found out that, at the time, was what Rio was always like. Over the week we were there our ship's crew experienced it's share of muggings, assaults, street scammers and a few knifings. Many of these events occurred right on the world famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Most of the really violent incidents were perpetrated by gangs of young boys coming down from the favelas.
Fast forward almost 30 years and even with the massive "clean up" for the olympics, Rio is just as bad as it was... if not worse. Venture out of the normal tourist areas during the days or almost anywhere at night and you're in jeopardy of being robbed or accosted. Such a shame because it really is a beautiful location.
