On her first two albums, 2019’s Essentials and 2021’s Sensational, Danish R&b singer Erika de Casier displayed a preternatural sense of creative and personal self-assurance. Her lyrical modus operandi fell somewhere between sly defiance and cool detachment as she flexed her career ambitions while shrugging off bad dates. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that de Casier was launched into international recognition in 2023 by co-writing K-pop group NewJeans’s “Super Shy,” a song about overcoming insecurity.
With Still, her first album as a newly minted hitmaker, she unravels her typically unbothered persona, expressing a newfound degree of doubt and romantic turmoil. The album roughly tracks the course of a tumultuous relationship from nascent flirtation to post-breakup reconciliation, placing de Casier in unfamiliar emotional territory.
This arc begins in typical de Casier fashion with “Home Alone,” a showcase of her signature retro-futuristic production grounded in the sounds of Y2K-era R&b.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Birth/Rebirth (Laura Moss)
Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. Directed by Laura Moss, there’s the sense they either don’t have much of a feel for the genre or rather harbors a general disdain for the shorthands it’s fallen into (hopefully they don’t get absorbed into bad studio product soon), the film’s tendencies refreshingly feel free of the trappings of calling-card cinema. – Ethan V. (full review)
Where to Stream: Shudder, AMC+
The Curse (Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie)
Following up the discomfitingly brilliant The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder...

Turnstile and Badbadnotgood have surprise released a collaborative EP titled New Heart Designs.
The three-song EP includes re-imaginings of tracks from Turnstile’s acclaimed 2021 album Glow On: “Mystery,” “Alien Love Call” (featuring Blood Orange), and “Underwater Boi.” Along with the EP’s release, Turnstile have shared a companion video containing all three songs that was shot and edited by Alex Henery.
Sonically, the tracks are mostly based on Badbadnotgood’s interpretation of the arrangements. The big chords and slam-dance inducing rhythms of the originals are replaced with lush jazz instrumentation — per Badbadnotgood’s general M.O. — with the vocals of Turnstile’s Brendan Yates layered on top.
Far from mere remixes, these takes almost sound like entirely different songs, and they should appeal to fans of either band.
Meanwhile, Turnstile have a series of UK/European shows and festival appearances on the horizon, followed by US festival slots at Riot Fest,...

To call Harry Styles’s Love on Tour a ‘smash hit’ would be an understatement. The worldwide shows have gone down so well that the 28-year-old singer has announced a slew of extra dates for 2023.
Five new UK and 12 new European shows have been added to the Love on Tour itinerary, including two nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, tickets for which will go on sale this week.
The newly announced tour dates will kick off in Horsens, Denmark on 13 May 2023 with the UK leg beginning in Coventry on 22 May. Styles will also play in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Ireland.
It has been a busy couple of years for Styles. His Love on Tour shows were postponed due to the pandemic, finally starting again in September 2021, and his third solo album, Harry’s House, came out in May 2022 and is currently up for the 2022 Mercury Prize.

Snail Mail, the project of singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan, brought her unique brand of emotive indie rock to The Tonight Show Friday, performing the song “Glory” off her critically acclaimed sophomore LP, Valentine.
Backed by her band, Jordan displayed her guitar chops as she ran through the song, which documents a feeling of helplessness while trapped in a codependent relationship. “You owe me/You own me,” she sings. “I could never hurt you, my love/You know me.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the first seven episodes of “Euphoria” Season 2.
Despite the immense popularity of HBO’s “Euphoria,” clearing a song for use in the show isn’t as easy as it may appear — especially when it comes to legacy artists and estates.
As music supervisor Jen Malone puts it, the teenage drama series has “sex, nudity, violence, drugs, guns. There’s not one thing that was missing as far as red flags for approval parties.”
And yet the first episode of Season 2 kicks off with Billy Swan’s cover of “Don’t Be Cruel,” made famous by Elvis Presley. The song plays as the grandmother of Fezco (Angus Cloud) struts into a strip club, walks in on a man receiving oral sex and shoots him in both legs. So how did Malone convince Presley’s estate to let the show use the song?...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t seen the first two episodes of “Euphoria” Season 2.
In HBO’s “Euphoria,” music isn’t just a supplementary factor to the plot — it’s arguably as important as the characters themselves. For proof, look no further than the titles of the episodes — most are named after songs, like Birdman and Lil Wayne’s “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” (Season 1 Episode 2), Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s “’03 Bonnie and Clyde” (Season 1 Episode 5) and Bob Dylan’s “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” (Season 2 Episode 1). But more than anything, the show’s intense cocktail of high school drama, countless drugs, in-your-face violence and unrequited romance lends itself perfectly to a stellar soundtrack.
Complemented by a beautiful original score from Labrinth, music supervisor Jen Malone has expertly selected needle drops from across the musical spectrum to further the characters’ emotions and connect with the show’s audience, from...

Professional athletes, having trained with laser-like focus on a single pursuit for most of their lives, are not always the most interesting people. Tennis provides a few exceptions. John McEnroe, Serena Williams, and Andre Agassi all sport personalities as explosive off court as they are (or were) on it. Roger Federer is known for being a gentleman. Gael Monfils, a Frenchman, has a certain je ne sais quoi. Most everyone else makes the commentators sing for their supper.
Naomi Osaka can be soft-spoken, though not when it comes to her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The 23-year-old has four Grand Slam titles to her name and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world in women’s singles. Being a little camera-shy has no bearing on her tennis, but it doesn’t make for great movie-making.

Mykki Blanco has released a new song, “It’s Not My Choice,” featuring Blood Orange. The track will appear on Blanco’s upcoming mini-album, Broken Hearts and Beauty Sleep, out June 18th via Transgressive Records.

Last summer, Beck was at loose ends in Los Angeles. “My whole year was canceled, with the shutdowns and everything,” says the singer. “My engineer’s wife was having a baby, so he wasn’t available. I really hadn’t been making much music. My studio had been dark for a year.”
Then came word that Paul McCartney had a new solo album in the works — and that he’d asked for Beck to remix one of its songs. “‘Ok, McCartney’s calling, let’s get in there and figure out how everything works!

A conversation between the rock group Sparks and the filmmaker who has made a movie about them, Edgar Wright, is be one of the standout draws of this year’s Sundance ASCAP Music Cafe, which, along with the host festival itself, has moved off Park City’s Main Street and online for 2021.
Wright’s documentary “The Sparks Brothers,” about the five-decade musical career of Ron and Russell Mael, is one of the more eagerly anticipated titles of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Other conversations scheduled for ASCAP’s programming include a chat between “Passing” director Rebecca Hall and composer Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), and another uniting composers Siddhartha Khosla (“This Is Us”) and Amanda Jones.
Musical performances will no longer serve as a draw to festival attendees who want a break from the cold, but may be just as worthy an excuse for a lull from working at home.

Devonté Hynes fills the world of Luca Gaudagnino’s We Are Who We Are with airy piano scores and haunting synth numbers that give color and character to the Chioggia military base and its eclectic group of residents. However, when the Blood Orange front man isn’t tying the lush scenes of Italy’s coast together with original music, he’s part of the story – as an integral figure in the season finale and as an idol for Jack Dylan Grazer’s teenage protagonist, Fraser.
We Are Who We Are may be Hynes’ first venture into the world of television scoring, but the creator’s far from new to the Hollywood scene. In 2013 he composed original music for Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto and Melina Matsoukas’ Queen & Slim in 2019. Hynes recently took home an ASCAP London Music Award for his Ost for the drama starring Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya.

The Avalanches have teamed with Leon Bridges for their new track “Interstellar Love,” the latest single from the Australian duo’s upcoming album We Will Always Love You.
The track features a sample of Alan Parsons Project’s “Eye in the Sky” and is inspired — like the album itself — by the story of astronomer Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan capturing their romance on tape and sending it into space as part of the Voyager’s Golden Record.
“Leon is an incredible singer, with just the most beautiful voice.

For the better part of the last decade, Dev Hynes has been one of the most prolific artists in the kind of taste-making pop and R&b that tops critics’ best-of lists and soundtracks five-course meals at your favorite restaurant. In addition to his five albums as Blood Orange, Hynes’ dance card as a writer-producer includes Solange, Sky Ferreira, Carly Rae Jepsen, A$AP Rocky, Mariah Carey and many others.
And in the past year alone, he’s released his latest Blood Orange project (the star-studded mixtape “Angel’s Pulse”), a collaborative classical album with the quartet Third Coast Percussion and his score for Melina Matsoukas’ “Queen & Slim.”

“I used to be a lot of things,” Army wife Jenny (Faith Alabi) admits. “Then I stopped being a lot of things. Truth is, I don’t know who I am anymore.”
Jenny’s dilemma is one that applies to every character in We Are Who We Are, a lyrical coming-of-age drama from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino. A young couple on an awkward first date become counterculture fugitives in this powerful directorial debut
This arresting debut feature from Melina Matsoukas – Grammy-award winning director of Beyoncé’s Formation video, whose television CV includes Master of None and Insecure – puts new twists on familiar outlaw riffs that can be traced back through Badlands and Bonnie and Clyde to À bout de souffle and beyond. Boasting outstandingly empathic performances from dynamite screen presence Daniel Kaluuya (Oscar-nominated for Get Out) and rising star Jodie Turner-Smith, in a career-making first feature lead, it’s an intoxicatingly lawless lovers-on-the-run romance played out against the politically charged backdrop of racially divided modern America.
Shot in a dreamy natural light by Tat Radcliffe, who did such remarkable work on French-Algerian director Yann Demange’s Belfast-set ’71, and sensuously scored by Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), Queen & Slim immerses its audience in an unfolding road-movie fable. While...

Danny Brown dissects the past in the new video for “Best Life,” off his latest album uknowhatimsayin¿
Directed by Augustin Vita, the clip complements Brown’s verses about growing up in Detroit with a potent mixture of gravity and humor. As the rapper spits the song in an old car bursting with flowers, the video seems to follow a group of four kids from childhood to young adulthood, chronicling a life of video games, birthday parties, family fights, hustling to get by and run-ins with the cops.

Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio is the latest high-profile name to sign up to Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s Quibi.
Mercurio, who also created BBC’s hit police drama Line of Duty, is developing science fiction thriller Transmissions for the short-form service. The show is set at a remote radio observatory where a lone scientist begins receiving eerie signals from deep space.
The series comes from Mercurio’s indie Htm Television, which is a joint venture with Flack producer Hat Trick Productions. It is the first major project to emerge from the fledgling firm. Hat Trick Productions’ Managing Director Jimmy Mulville will produce.
The development comes after Mercurio told Deadline that he was considering opportunities to work with U.S. platforms now that Line of Duty is running smoothly on BBC One, and there’s no official season two of Richard Madden-fronted Bodyguard. Jeffery Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s Quibi has picked up Skinny Dip, a comedy series based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2004 satirical novel. The project had been set up as a drama pilot at the CW in the 2018 cycle but did not move forward there.
The same core group remains attached: Producer Kashet Studios, writers Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner and executive producers Peter Traugott, Rachel Kaplan, Alon Shtruzman, Avi Nir, Friend and Lerner.
The mobile-first content company describes the series as a darkly comedic odyssey of revenge. A jilted woman miraculously survives a night in the open ocean after her husband suddenly flings her overboard on their anniversary cruise. Plucked to safety serendipitously by a retired cop, the two team up to gaslight her husband.

Exclusive: Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Quibi has lined up projects with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro and Antoine Fuqua. Now, it is turning its attention to other parts of the world including the UK.
Deadline understands that the short-form service is developing an adaptation of Harriet Tyce’s psychological thriller novel Blood Orange with Bodyguard and Line of Duty producer World Productions. It’s thought that the ITV-owned indie has set a writer and is adapting the book as a twelve-part series consisting of ten episodes.
The novel, which was published earlier this year by Wildfire and Grand Central Publishing, follows Alison Wood, a criminal barrister taking on her first murder case.
Alison has it all. A doting husband, adorable daughter, and a career on the rise – she’s just been given her first murder case to defend. But all is never as it seems.

Swedish singer Neneh Cherry explores the way life is often viewed, and lived, through the lens of a phone in the new video for “Natural Skin Deep.”
Artist and filmmaker Akinola Davies directed the clip, which finds Cherry singing the frenetic cut and dancing around the streets of Beirut, Lebanon. Her performance, however, is given a surreal edge by the various crowds who film her every move on their phones, whether they’re watching her on the shores of the Mediterranean or staring at her through the window of a house.
