Critical Zone, an Iranian drama shot in secret by dissident director Ali Ahmadzadeh, has won the Golden Leopard honor for best film at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival.
Ahmadzadeh, who has been banned from leaving Iran, was unable to attend the awards ceremony, held at the Swiss city Saturday night. The Iranian government pressured the director to pull the film from competition. Through its story of a man and his dog, who navigate Tehran’s underworld, selling drugs and talking to troubled souls, Critical Zone depicts a nation rebelling against an oppressive regime in any way it can. Produced by Germany’s Counter Intuitive Film, Critical Zone is being sold worldwide by Luxbox.
Another proudly political filmmaker, British legend Ken Loach, won the audience award, the Ubs Prix du Public, at Locarno’s 76th annual festival for his latest (and perhaps last) feature film: The Old Oak. The drama, which premiered in Cannes,...

Iranian filmmaker Ali Ahmadzadeh clinched the Golden Leopard in the main international competition of the 76th Locarno Film Festival with his latest feature Critical Zone (Mantagheye Bohrani).
Ahmadzadeh was not in attendance to receive the award as he is currently banned from leaving his native Iran. Last month, the country’s authorities summoned Ahmadzadeh to the Ministry of Security, where he was pressured to pull Critical Zone from Locarno’s official competition. The film’s international sales agent Luxbox Paris and the producer, Sina Ataeian Dena, also said they had received threatening emails and messages demanding the film be pulled from the fest.
The pic, described as “a hymn to freedom and resistance in Iran,” was shot without permission from authorities before recent protests started. The plot follows a man who drives through Tehran’s underworld with his dog, dealing drugs and healing troubled souls. Born in Tehran in 1986, Critical Zone...

Global Digital Releasing, the film distribution company that launched in 2017 with the hit Welsh language drama “The Passing,” is changing lanes to focus primarily on documentaries and live television events, TheWrap can report exclusively.
“To be a boutique distributor in today’s overwhelmingly competitive content game has made it even more vital that we consistently evaluate the performance trends of our films. Undoubtedly, we’ve seen a steady uptick in both engagement and revenue streams of our documentaries, well above and beyond our narrative films,” Global Digital Releasing president Joe Dain said in a statement.
“We believe this change in direction will not only benefit documentary filmmakers by giving them a dedicated home in the indie space, but this niche will also help differentiate our label from the competition and allow us to excel in the sector.”

The BBC and Tvnz’s adaptation of Man Booker Prize winning novel “The Luminaries,” starring Eva Green, is among the scripted TV projects that will feature in this year’s Berlinale Series Market and Conference program at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Set during the 1860s gold rush in New Zealand, the Working Title and Southern Light Films-produced “The Luminaries” is based on Eleanor Catton’s prize-winning novel of the same name. FremantleMedia handles international sales.
“The Luminaries” is one of several ‘strong’ Australian and New Zealand series screening at the market, according to Berlinale Series Market and Conference co-ordinator Katharina Böndel.
Böndel added that the line-up has a focus this year on shows with strong female leads or that are about minority groups or indigenous characters.
They include the second series of atmospheric outback crime drama “Mystery Road,” sold by All3Media International, which will also world premiere at the festival itself.

The Video Essay is a joint project of Mubi and Filmadrid Festival Internacional de Cine. Film analysis and criticism found a completely new and innovative path with the arrival of the video essay, a relatively recent form that already has its own masters and is becoming increasingly popular. The limits of this discipline are constantly expanding; new essayists are finding innovative ways to study the history of cinema working with images. With this non-competitive section of the festival both Mubi and Filmadrid will offer the platform and visibility the video essay deserves. The six selected works will be shown during the dates of Filmadrid on Mubi’s cinema publication, the Notebook. There will also be a free public screening of the selected works during the festival. When it comes to ghost stories, I’m not the biggest fan. Even though I often get irrational fears such as someone grabbing my foot as I walk up the stairs or seeing a distorted reflection in the mirror when you I go for a pee in the middle of the night, I really don’t believe in ghosts or outside forces. When it comes to films about ghosts, I’m even less of a fan. How many times do I have to suffer cheap orchestra stabs when the ghost pops up in front of the camera? You know the score and you’re probably tired of it too. Thankfully, with The Passing (original title: Yr Ymadawiad), Gareth Bryn and a selection of those involved with the critically acclaimed police detective drama series Hinterland...

Gareth Bryn: "The house was brilliant. It had to be because it’s really the equivalent of the Psycho house."
“Everyone puts lot of pressure on a first feature but, you know, you can’t feel that kind of pressure,” says Gareth Bryn, talking about his film, The Passing, which opens in cinemas across the UK on Friday. It’s the story of a young couple rescued from their crashed car by a mysterious stranger who lives alone in an isolated house, and it shows remarkable confidence for a first feature.
Gareth has worked in television for many years, so I start by asking him why he chose this moment to take on cinema.
“I was given the opportunity to create something quite old school that reminded me films like Solaris and the Three Colours trilogy,” he says..” There’s lots of space and lots of silences so as...

This visually striking Welsh drama from director Gareth Bryn prevails at establishing a haunted ambience and fantastic characters via strong performances, but it suffers from a sauntering second act and awkwardly jimmied in genre staples. The story of twenty-something couple Iwan (Dyfan Dwyfor) and Sara (Annes Elwy), who crash their car into a ravine then

Coming off the success of BBC backed crime series Hinterland - a series shot simultaneously in Welsh and English language version - director Gareth Bryn and the core creative team behind the series have pushed the boundaries of Welsh language content even further with their debut feature film The Passing (Yr Ymadawiad). A classy, artistic chiller that had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2015, The Passing is the first ever Welsh language genre film and given Bryn's obvious eye behind the camera, is hopefully far from the last. Stanley has been alone with his ghosts for as long as he can remember, living an isolated life in his slowly crumbling family home in the Welsh hills. For years, it’s been only Stanley and...
