The best episode of Gravity Falls to date
vailskibum9410 March 2015
This was by far the best episode of Gravity Falls so far. It is all about Stan and whether you should trust him or not, and while I normally don't write reviews like this, I thought it was completely necessary for this episode.

There are so many things that happen, and it's clear that nothing will ever be the same in the town of Gravity Falls. If you watch the episode after this one without watching this, you will have no idea what exactly happened. That's how big this is.

Without giving too much away, there are HUGE secrets revealed in this episode, especially in the last minute. Grab some food, sit down, and enjoy the most shocking and exhilarating Gravity Falls episode ever.

This culmination of plot elements and running themes turns everything up to 11.
rudyharrelson11 March 2015
This episode felt like a theatrical film for me; everything felt like it had been turned up to an 11. The conflict had never been higher and the characters had never never had to deal with so much in one episode.

This episode is a shining example of how to deliver, pure and simple. I've loved Gravity Falls since the first episode; watching and dissecting the mystery between episodes has been the funnest part! And this episode delivered on all fronts. The big reveal is immensely satisfying and powerful while also bringing up more questions. The inter-character conflict is believable and heart-wrenching. The visuals are entertaining and memorable. The music is evocative and beautifully scored. The voice-acting was absolutely inspired.

The only aspect of this episode that didn't appeal to me was the jokes. I felt like there were a lot of attempted jokes, but I only found a few funny. Of course, that's a matter of personal taste. That said, I didn't feel like the less-funny jokes detracted from the episode.

Overall, this is easily my favorite Gravity Falls episode. I cannot wait for the next episode.

This show deserves a Blu-Ray box set with all the trappings. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Didn't know cartoons could be this good!
leoalb-231051 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
That is what I call an episode. I did just watch it and now I wonder why I hadn't watched Gravity Falls earlier. After the first season that was kind of average, comes a second season (not done with it jet) with amazing episodes like "Into the bunker", "Society of the blind eye", "Blendin's game" and "Northwest mansion mystery". And now this. I love that I have 9 episodes left to watch.

The episode starts great with Stan and the kids having a "crazy-rooftop-fireworks-party". And then they throw water ballons. When Stan gets arrested, the already epic episode becomes better than I could ever imagine a Gravity Falls-episode could ever be. It ends with one, if not the best plot twist and cliffhanger I've ever seen in a cartoon.

I'm so excited to continue watching!!

Great

I've seen this show many times before and I enjoy it because it is smarter then most cartoons now a days, but this episode blew my mind. This episode of a Disney cartoon felt like I was watching a hit drama series that you would hear about from TV and all your friends. The plot and climax of this episode had me at the edge of my seat seeing what was going to happen. With all the twists and turns of this episode while keeping some kid gags in their just worked great together. I usually catch this show if I'm just watching TV and its on, but because of this episode I'm going to need to catch this next episode on its premiere date.

What did I just watched?!!
dylancrossman18 August 2016
This episode.... it's by far the best episode in series. Hell even the best in Disney history!! This episode had me speechless and always left my jaw in the floor! Every time I watched this episode, I'm always thinking: "how in hell that episode came out of Disney??!! Disney is too friendly to make something like...THIS!!" Great works Disney! Alex should make more series more often! No more crappy cartoons like pickle and peanut. we need someone like Alex Hirsch to be in charge in making series! That episode is hand down the BEST episode in Gravity Falls along with Weirdmaggendon 3 as very close 2nd. I watched this multiple times and I'm still speechless, especially the fact it's from Disney! Great work Disney, more series like Gravity Falls, less series like Pickle and Peanut!

Overview
neelshahwhtc7 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In his laboratory under the Mystery Shack, Stan rigs drums of chemical waste to power his machine. He sets a timer to go off in eighteen hours, at which time the machine will activate. During the activation period, temporary gravity anomalies occur as a side effect. The next day, Stan watches as Dipper and Mabel launch illegal fireworks off the roof of the shack. As the twins put out the fires they caused with a water balloon fight, law enforcement officers arrest Stan for stealing the chemical waste the night before. When child services take hold of Dipper and Mabel, the twins decide to clear Stan's name using footage from the shack's security camera of the night before.

As the twins are being driven off, Mabel distracts a nearby driver into road rage, sending the child services car off the road. The twins then head back to the Mystery Shack. Much to the twins' dismay, the videotapes prove Stan's theft of the chemical waste. Shortly after, Dipper finds a box of fake identity documents and clippings from newspapers reporting Stan's death. In the box, Dipper finds a password on a slip of paper. Mabel identifies this as a button combination for the shack's vending machine.

Meanwhile, Stan is being interrogated by Agent Powers. Stan asks for a phone call, which he uses to call Soos, and instruct him to guard the vending machine. A few hours later, a gravity anomaly occurs, which Stan uses to escape from the interrogation room. Outside, he pays a taxi driver to distract the agents, so that he can run back to the Mystery Shack.

Back at the Mystery Shack, Dipper and Mabel find the vending machine being guarded by Soos. During a brief fight, Dipper inputs the password, revealing the entrance to Stan's lab. Inside, Dipper is in disbelief that Stan was hiding the first two journals from him. He then puts the three journals together, revealing the blueprints to Stan's machine. Under a black light, a secret message reveals that the entire universe could be torn apart if the machine is fully activated.

Dipper decides to override the machine, but Stan comes in to stop him. At that moment, another anomaly occurs, causing everyone to levitate. Mabel makes it to the override lever as another anomaly occurs. Forced to decide between trusting Stan and stopping the machine, Mabel tearfully sides with Stan, enabling the activation of the machine and engulfing everything in a flash of light.

When the anomaly ends, Dipper, Mabel, Stan, and Soos are left unharmed. A mysterious figure comes through the machine's portal, and puts a six-fingered hand on the first journal, revealing himself to be the author. Stan then reveals that the author is his long-lost brother. The episode ends with a flashback of Stan and his brother as children, swinging on a swing set as they look out to the ocean, playing over the end credits.

eladamittai29 August 2020
This is the best episode ever made!!! In every tv show period!!!! If you haven't seen it for some reason, DO IT!!!! (after you watch all of tne episodes leading up to this one). You won't regret it! Sorry sozin's comet, this is a masterpiece! The amazing characters, the ABSOLUTELY INSANE level of tension, the revelations that only give you more questions (in a good way), and the last 4 minutes of this episode, is the most emotional I have ever been watching anything. The animation and music are fantastic, the voice acting is phenomenal and the pacing is fast and moving quickly, but with enough time to let everything sink. Best 22 minutes of content ever!!!!

Cool episode
kaimoney25 August 2020
This episode is very dramatic in a good way. It's not my favorite Gravity Falls episode, but I still find it an enjoyable episode from beginning to end. And the ending was pretty cool too. I'm not gonna spoil it for those who haven't seen it, because I recommend that you should watch it. It's definitely something you would be watching over and over again.

The best episode for a cartoon I've ever seen
draco_graham6 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is the best of this entire series, and that's saying something because we're talking about Gravity Falls, the only series that doesn't have a single bad episode. The plot of this episode is that Grunkle Stan is arrested by the federal agency for stealing barrels of toxic waste. Mable and Dipper try to prove his innocence so they break into his office to find evidence from the surveillance camera, only to find that he did in fact steal the waste. They then go into a rabbit hole of lies that Stan told them, ending with a newspaper article stating that Stan was dead from a car accident, with the breaks tampered with. They then go into his hidden lair behind the vending machine to find the device, and the journals state that it can destroy the universe. At this point Stan has escaped captivity from the feds, and has appeared to try to stop them from turning off the machine, telling them they have to trust him, a line he's used to scam many people before, plus this time they have evidence against him. Dipper ans Soos have lost trust in him but Mable still wants to trust Stan but doesn't know if she should. The end is the biggest plot twist/reveal ever in the show. The device reveals to be a portal and out walks no one else than Stan's brother, the author of the books. This is one of my favorite episodes of all time. Not only do the characters not believe in Stan, you yourself question if he is who he claims.

This is my absolute favorite episode of Gravity Falls.
jbbianchino7 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Gravity Falls is known for having great mysteries and high expectations, but this episode shows every good quality of this show and multiplies it by 100.It's action packed, there are constant mysteries and questions, there is a spooky atmosphere and the episode is only twenty minutes, but feels like sixty. This episode shows just how much more you can learn about a character in just one episode. The voice acting is very believable and top-notch.The plot is memorable, smart, and just fits in very well with the run time and the rest of the show. This show is usually surprising at best. But I personally think that this,by far,is the absolute best episode that has ever been shown of Gravity falls. In conclusion, this episode is a powerful, emotional and mystery-filled episode that is exactly what we have wanted from Gravity Falls even more than it has already given it to us.

One of the best scenes in TV history
halavurta10 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The scene that you will understand which one I am talking about the moment you see it is the one of the best scenes in TV history. Such a dramatic, touching and powerful scene with a very simple but equally strong dialogue.

The ones who already watched it, y'all know "the scene".

Without a doubt the best episode of the series and one of the most epic in the history of animation
MomentIMDB8 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Gravity Falls is an excellent series, I never thought that an animation series could be so epic in mystery apsects. This episode is perfect from beginning to end, every scene is incredible. The plot twist is one of the most inseperated of all the series, isn't it stan? The most epic scene in the entire series is the final scene, since they escape from the prison and their brother appears. I had goosebumps, I was speechless and breathless, I couldn't stop seeing. I could see it 1000 and not get tired

Another Great Episode of "Gravity Falls"
GravityLoudHouseLover19 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Hey Guys RegularShow1 here again and today I'm going to review another episode of "Gravity Falls" called "Not What He Seem" In this episode Dipper, Mabel and Grunkle Stan are have a good time with eating popsicles, throwing water balloons and having fun. Grunkle Stan wants to tell Dipper and Mabel about something but suddenly two government agents tackle Grunkle Stan and take him away. Dipper and Mabel try to what's going on. There one funny part in this episode where Dipper and Mabel were looking at a security tape of Grunkle Stan about to say Son of a - until they cut him off which was very funny. Anyway Soos is at a Dive-thru until he hears Grunkle Stan and thinks he coming out of the drive-thru but realizes it coming from his walkie talkie and tells him to guard the vending machine. Anyway Dipper and Mabel try to get pass Soos to the vending machine. Anyway giving this episode a 10 out 10 stars. See you Later.

One of the best plot twist in cartoons history
luisangelperaltagomez20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The light appearing from the basement that we don't know what is. The fear of being in jail by government with all the FBI following you. And the situation with Stan and his true identity makes his episode a masterpiece of how to create an episode. The mistery about Stan, his illegal activities, his secret and the truth issues that not only the boys have, we also have. We all suspect that something is wrong and is not how it looks. This all makes this the best episode of the series by far. And the true Stanford appearing from the portal is the most epic moment in the show and the biggest plot twist of a cartoon of this level.

What an excellent and entertaining episode
asifrahman-769097 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was fantastic.

While many people consider NWHS to be the best Gravity Falls episode, it is only my 2nd favourite after Dreamscaperers, simply because the mood of the latter is better.

That being said, I have no fault with the overall plot and story of this episode. The drama increases scene by scene, the animation is breathtaking and the dialogue is excellent. Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel's interactions, from the opening when they set off fireworks, to the time when they nearly shut the portal down, is really good. Most of the loose ends introduced before come together.

I also liked how it brings out Dipper's naturally suspicious personality. He is the one thinking with his head - given what they've seen he is more likely to not trust Stan. Mabel thinks with her heart. His exclamation after the portal opens is very chilling.

The animation when they find fake IDs is breattaking. The final reveal is done perfectly, from the appearance of the author to the shocked glances of our characters

Agent Powers has some great moments. My favourite line is from Dipper: "The other two journals? All this time... all this time, Stan had them?! I can't believe it! Was anything he said to us real?" What a masterful story.

One of The Greatest Animated TV Episodes of the Last Decade
troychrisrider31 March 2024
So, I watched this episode without really watching any else of Gravity Falls. Sure, I watched videos about the lore, but that didn't really count as watching it. This episode is a cinematic masterpiece because: It has great pacing, likable characters, an amazing art style, animation, and just is able to tell this very complex story in less than 22 minutes, like WOW! That is impressive. Disney has not rebooted this show and that's sad. If there was a Gravity Falls season 3 I would get excited. But yeah, overall I think this episode is near perfection and it really expands the characters and like, it reveals the twist villain that is Stan, overall this episode is a masterpiece that has such a short amount of time, yet so much lore and care put in to it. That is why Not What He Seems (and just Gravity Falls in general) is so good in the first place.

Real emotion, real laughs, not to mention animated so well
permanentwearerevolution31 January 2022
Like a black hole devouring everything around it, Gravity Falls has been taking what was an episodic series into a more intricate sci-fi/fantasy narrative which pivots on a decision to trust Stan made by Maybel and has some legit feels behind it.

If you've enjoyed one second of this series, this episode pulls from all of it's strengths and also captures so fantastic visuals including a very very cool zero gravity effect reminiscent of Man of Steel's world engine device. Hair, cars and the town have great detail and it was a real pleasure to watch. Can't wait to see how the rest of the series goes, even if it doesn't live up to this episode I'm glad to have it.

Warning: Spoilers
The whole show leading up to this was full of constant easter eggs and storytelling with just the right amount of subtlety and obvious details. This episode changed the trajectory of kid shows...forever. Whole time you were trying to guess what was about to happen and then some dude pops out of a portal ONLY to be announced as Grunkle Stan's brother!!! And then the closing credits scene with two boys on a set of swings....yea...yea.... I still get chills to this day.

(annoyed) Oh, that's it, fridge. I'm leaving! (closes door, after a while returns to open it) Oh, but I'm really hungry. Okay, I'm just gonna close my eyes and choose. (does so as she moves her hand around. When she opens her eyes, her hand lands on...) Blueberries! (picks up box of blueberries) (talking to blueberry) I'm going to eat you. (chomps down blueberry) Alright, I'm not hungry anymore. (thinks) Now, what's a game that only needs Bingo? Ooh, I know. (giggles as she runs off) Chilli lightly shakes her head and goes to find her daughter. She finds Bingo sitting in the playroom closet. Bingo sees her and moves closer as her mum gets a bit lower to hug her.)

Don't Get Confused
Xarx11717 December 2022
Im writting so people don't get confused with IMDb users reviews for this episode. Its by no means a perfect episode but its great. It has many great elements throughout. There is good character developement concerning Stan. Also, the plot evolves and some secrets are revealed. There are emotions present too. The animation is great also. Some of the comedy is enjoyable and the hatmosphere is good like the rest of the show.

Overall, this episode is a little bit childish but still has good plot developement, some emotion, decent animation and a good hatmosphere. So yes, it is good but maybe a little bit overrated.
