The practice of short films making the jump to the big screen is nothing new (Deadpool and Rauri Robinson’s The Leviathan being the most recent examples), but when they’re as impressive as The Garden you can’t really fault it. A sci-fi re-imagining of John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, the VFX heavy short, made for $30,000, has being picked up by Polly Johnson and Warner Bros. based Polymorphic Pictures with an eye to turn it into a new sci-fi franchise. Following a group of explorers searching for a new home after discovering Earth’s sun is dying, the proof of concept video also included a feature script by director E.B. Rhee and producer Aaron Strongoni, meaning the heavy lifting of fleshing out the core idea is already done. The last few years has seen a number of proof-of-concept projects being picked up for production and it seems the trend continues and the latest project to meet that fate is The Garden.
Co-written by Aaron Strongoni and E.B. Rhee and directed by Rhee, the story here is a sci-fi retelling of John Milton's "Paradise Lost." What I can't figure out is how Milton's story fits into this one which, according to the description, "follows a group of explorers who set out into deep space in search of a new home for humanity after they learn that the sun is dying."
That all said, the project does sound interesting (if familiar) and Rhee has created a cool looking alien design and a number of impress [Continued ...]...
