Maverick Film and Complex Corp have acquired “Murder Company,” an action film set during World War II. The film will be released in theaters, on demand and digital on July 5.
“Murder Company” was written by Jesse Mittelstadt (“Altitude”) and directed by Shane Dax Taylor (“The Best Man”). The film stars William Moseley, who appeared in “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “The Royals,” as well as Pooch Hall (“Ray Donovan”) Gilles Marini (“Sex in the City”) and Joe Anderson (“Hercules”). Kelsey Grammer, who recently revived “Frasier,” rounds out the ensemble.
“We’re very excited to present ‘Murder Company’ to audiences,” said Richard Switzer, president of Maverick Film. “The film is a non-stop thrill ride with a very authentic feel to it, having shot fully in Europe.”

Following the best movie of last year, 2024 brings a lesson in cinema history from Martin Scorsese. He’s narrated a new documentary on two of the greatest directors of all time, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the duo responsible for The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death, and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Considering Scorsese’s close connection to their work, from being captivated at a young age and much later becoming friends with Michael Powell (who was married to Scorsese’s long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker), he’s the perfect guide through their filmography.
Following the Berlinale premiere of David Hinton’s Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger, it’ll now get a U.K. and Ireland release on May 10 from Altitude and the first trailer has arrived. With U.S. distribution coming from Cohen Media Group, Mubi has also...

The poster for No Way Up says that it’s from the executive producers of the 47 Meters Down series. That’s not a good sign because it means it’s from the money men behind those films, not the writers, directors or any of the creative types. This time around, they’ve decided to offer their finny cash cows an all-you-can-eat buffet and, taking a cue from Airport 77, they’ve crashed an airliner into the Pacific. That leaves the survivors trapped on the ocean floor in a rapidly shrinking air pocket and surrounded by sharks.
As No Way Up starts things are already looking bad for Jed and Kyle. Kyle’s date for their trip to Cabo backed out at the last minute.

Bill Bryson bestseller A Short History of Nearly Everything is being reimagined as an animated TV series by former The Simpsons showrunner Josh Weinstein and Paddington scribe Jason Hazeley, with Richard Ayoade narrating.
Altitude and Brouhaha Entertainment are forging the series version of a book that has sold 15 million copies worldwide and been translated into 50 languages, with a view to turning it into a long-running entertainment franchise.
Published two decades ago, the book sees celebrated writer Bryson take on popular science by tackling issues such as the size of the universe and the development of the human race, and setting them out in layman’s terms. A large part of the book is devoted to relating humorous stories about the scientists behind the research and their sometimes eccentric behaviours. Narrated by Ayoade, the animation will tell these stories spanning centuries and continents, time and space, and the abstract and the real,...

Social distancing, mask wearing also end from that date.
English cinemas will be permitted to resume 100% capacity screenings from July 19, following the UK government’s commitment to the final stage in its roadmap out of lockdown.
Prime minister Boris Johnson said he expected the final stage to go ahead as planned, with social distancing rules to be scrapped from that date, including for indoor entertainment venues.
The new rules are subject to a final review on July 12.
Mask-wearing will no longer be compulsory, meaning those attending cinemas will not have to wear one in any part of the building including foyers and screens.

Warner Bros.’ chiller “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” topped the box office with £2,708,455 in its opening week as the U.K. basked in late May sunshine and a long bank holiday weekend.
The good weather that traditionally keeps audiences outdoors did not appear to have a detrimental effect on the box office, with Sony’s family-friendly “Peter Rabbit 2” scoring £2,045,999 in its second week in second place, according to numbers released by Comscore.
However, if going purely by weekend numbers, “Peter Rabbit 2” collected £2 million, a shade over the £1.9 million taken by “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”
“Peter Rabbit 2” has now collected more than £7,484,061 in the U.K. Upcoming key market releases for the film include China (June 11), Japan (June 25), France (June 30), Germany (July 1), Italy (July 1), Spain (July 16) and Brazil (August 26).
Disney’s “Cruella” opened simultaneously on streamer Disney Plus and in cinemas and collected £1,453,635 in third place.
