Tim Minchin has been reflecting on the four years he sunk into trying to get the animated movie Larrikins made...
One of the casualties of Universal’s acquisition of DreamWorks Animation has been the promising-looking animated feature, Larrikins. Tim Minchin was set to direct this one, along with Chris Miller. And Minchin was providing the music for the film, too. Hugh Jackman and Margot Robbie were set to lead the voice cast, with the plug being pulled back in March.
Chatting to The Observer over the weekend, Minchin has been chatting about the movie, revealing that he and his family moved to Los Angeles four years ago to develop the film. When asked about his Hollywood experience, he admitted “I’m slowly recovering from the slings and arrows of outrageous Americans”.

The small-screen reimagining of Dirty Dancing aired Wednesday evening — and Twitter users candidly shared their opinions about the musical production.
Thirty years after the 1987 film favorite released, ABC gave it new life with its three-hour TV special, starring Abigail Breslin (Baby Houseman), Colt Prattes (Johnny Castle), Sarah Hyland (Lisa Houseman), Debra Messing (Marjorie Houseman), Nicole Scherzinger (Penny Rivera), Katey Sagal (Vivian Pressman) and Bruce Greenwood (Dr. Jake Houseman).
“This isn’t a replica of the original. This takes some liberties. It has the DNA of the original, but you are going to find out what happened to Baby and Johnny after that summer ended.

Dancing With the Stars fans got to see a whole different side to judges Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman during the season 24 finale on Tuesday.
The pair donned full construction worker costumes to join finalist Normani Kordei, who recreated her week six salsa routine set to "When I Grow Up" by The Pussycat Dolls.

As a back-up dancer, Tonioli brought some impressive moves. Goodman, on the other hand, looked more like everyone's grandpa at a wedding reception when the DJ plays a song he doesn't know but he's had enough wine to let loose.
As the dance progressed, Kordei's pro partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, stripped off his shirt (which happens so frequently it seems as though he's contractually obligated to flash his abs). However, Tonioli made sure to show some skin as well.

Normani Kordei delivered a powerhouse performance with her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, on Monday's Dancing With the Stars -- and for the second week in a row, she came just short of earning a perfect score, all because of judge Len Goodman.
While Carrie Ann Inaba, guest judge Nick Carter, and Bruno Tonioli awarded Normani three 10s for her salsa set to "When I Grow Up" by The Pussycat Dolls, Goodman shocked the audience when he gave her an eight.
Last week, the Fifth Harmony singer's red-hot paso doble set to "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan earned her three 10s as well, while she received only a 9 from Goodman.

James Corden imagined the horrific ambitions of President Donald Trump and his administration in a parody of Matilda's "When I Grow Up" on The Late Late Show Monday. The performance featured Matilda composer Tim Minchin as Trump, Broadway star Ben Platt as Sean Spicer, actress Abigail Spencer as Kellyanne Conway and Corden as Steve Bannon.
The bit found the four performers rocking back and forth on swings, singing about telling lies, taking away health insurance and denying climate change. "When I grow up," Corden sang as Bannon, "I will...

Finally, we have the Donald Trump musical our readers didn’t even know they needed. James Corden and guests Tim Minchin, Ben Platt and Abigail Spencer debuted “Donald: The Musical” last night on “The Late Late Show” — and this writer thinks they’ve got a hit on their hands. After all, the music is catchy, and its message pretty on-point. Corden used “When I Grow Up,” from Minchin’s musical “Matilda” as their source material. Minchin kicked the whole thing off as Young Trump: “When I grow up/I will be President and build big walls/Ban Muslims, play with...

Harvard University is considered a pretty serious place (it is an Ivy League school, after all), but when Rihanna shows up, it suddenly seems like the place to be. The singer was honored with its Humanitarian of the Year award on Tuesday night, and she brought her signature charm and attitude when she attended the ceremony in Cambridge, Ma. Rihanna founded the Believe Foundation, a charity to help critically ill children, when she was 18 and has used her global influence to raise awareness for numerous charities over the years. She was given her plaque by the dean of Harvard College, Rakesh Khurana, and was praised by students and little kids who said she's inspired them to "shine bright like a diamond" and to "work work work." Rihanna then took the stage to say a few words, where she did a hilarious hair flip while saying, "So I made it to Harvard.

Uniting Damian Wayne and Jon Kent, the current versions of Robin and Superboy, respectively, we trust this book will offer much action and excitement, with a hearty helping of youthful exuberance.
Spinning out of concepts introduced by Peter J. Tomasi in the pages of Superman, Super Sons will feature artwork provided by the up and coming Jorge Jimenez. To this point, the interaction between Damian and Jon has been quite entertaining and although teaming up costumed youths is nothing new, it stands to reason that this series will be as different from Teen Titans as...

Ruth Negga Reveals How Her Chemistry With Joel Edgerton Raised ‘Loving’ Beyond Melodrama — Tiff 2016
Ruth Negga employs a couple of handy metaphors when talking about her turn as Mildred Loving in Jeff Nichols’ biographical drama, “Loving,” from carrying a precious vase to safety alongside her co-star Joel Edgerton to launching off a trampoline under the guidance of Nichols. But each metaphor – thoughtfully considered and very charming, much like the Ethiopian-Irish actress herself – help drives home one single thing: The delicate, brave nature of taking on such a meaningful and important role.
Nichols’ film eschews the standard high-drama biographical movie formula, instead focusing on the more intimate aspects of the love story that would go on to change the face of marriage in America. While many Americans are at least aware of the existence of the landmark Loving v. Virginia case, few know the details – how the Lovings were ambushed and raided after their 1958 marriage, charged with a slew of crimes, forced to leave their...

You have to admire Tim Minchin’s confidence. Groundhog Day represents his second foray into creating musical theatre from much-loved stories. His previous attempt, also alongside director Matthew Warchus, was a rollicking take on Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Pleasingly, that was the kind of musical that unites adults and children in joy and admiration. It's peppered with at least three stone-cold classic songs - in Naughty, When I Grow Up and Revolting Children - melded to great dollops of pantomime humour, and shot through with the ink black fairy tale tone the original book’s author was so famous for.
Of course, fans of Minchin’s grandiose musical comedy will know his contradictory tendencies for self-deprecation and appearances in alongside a 90-odd piece orchestra. Much of...

For years, Star Wars fans were left in limbo; the original trilogy of movies starting in 1977 were listed as the fourth, fifth and sixth episodes in the series. Quickly, they became a cultural phenomenon, and the fan-base clamoured for more; people desperately wanted to see what happened in episodes one, two and three. Which beloved characters would we see in their youth? How did the Empire riiiiiiise to power? And just how did Darth Vader fall from grace?
Cue 1999’s The Phantom Menace. Alarm bells were ringing as the iconic on-screen scrolling text started telling a story about trade federations and political unrest; not exactly setting the scene for a swashbuckling lightsaber adventure. What followed was widely derided by the most ardent fans of the original trilogy. And it’s not tough to see why. Anakin Skywalker is an annoying brat. Terrible CGI infects basically every scene. If there's anything that will terrify a government it's a group of people with mysterious superpowers, according to the latest trailer for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
The final trailer for the film was premiered exclusively to San Diego Comic-Con visitors on Saturday night (July 11), and director Josh Trank explained that his movie will focus on the characters' lives before they gain powers.
