Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

‘The Silence’ Trailer: Flying Monsters Are Hunting Kiernan Shipka and Stanley Tucci by Sound — Watch
“The Silence” is capitalizing on the latest trend for post-apocalyptic stories with creatures that prey on humans by curtailing basic functions. First there was “A Quiet Place,” in which John Krasinski and Emily Blunt had to evade blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. Then came the Netflix movie “Bird Box,” where Sandra Bullock had to blindfold herself so that she could avoid looking at creatures with the ability to drive a person to suicide.
Now, Netflix is combining all of these elements and throwing in some of its go-to stars for an extra synergistic push. In the movie, flying critters who kind of look like bats have destroyed the world by going after humans if they make any sound. That’s a familiar premise! The film also pulls from its Netflix stable of stars, including “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actors Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto and “To...

Netflix movie The Silence showcases a family’s struggle to survive in a world overrun by carnivorous bats.
The Silence may be coming to the Netflix table with a horror premise that’s likely to evoke accusations of derivativeness, since it appears to be amalgam of two recent genre successes in A Quiet Place and Bird Box. However, the film has a bit of an alibi, since it’s based on the acclaimed 2015 novel of the same name by British horror novelist Tim Lebbon; meaning that, in the very least, its story pre-dates the zeitgeist explosion of those two films.
Regardless, The Silence showcases the ordeal of a family struggling to survive the onset of an apocalypse scenario in which the world is under attack by bat creatures; a survival scenario that – due to the sensitive, sonar-based hearing of bats – necessitates silence at all times, lest one...

It’s completely understandable that Sharon Tate’s sister, Debra, was extremely critical of Quentin Tarantino’s plans for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. After all, the history of big screen adaptations of the Manson murders hasn’t been great – see 2014’s tasteless House of Manson or the 2017’s bottom-of-the-barrel Wolves at the Door.
As such, back in February, she came down hard on the project, saying the following:
“To [celebrities] it’s a paycheck and these people just don’t care. They are terribly hurtful to the actual family and all the living victims. They don’t give a shit”.
She reserved particular ire for stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, accusing them of “throwing all their social responsibility to the wind,” But, in a pretty heartwarming twist, she’s since come around after Tarantino contacted her directly to speak with her about her concerns, particularly the somewhat sensationalist...

Imagine someone in your family was brutally murdered and then for the next half-century you were constantly reminded of her horrible death, with filmmakers lining up to dramatize it on the big screen. You’d be pretty pissed off, right?
Now you’re in the shoes of Debra Tate – sister of Manson family victim Sharon Tate – who is decidedly unimpressed with Quentin Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which is reportedly about Tate’s neighbour during the Manson murders.
In a recent interview with TMZ, she came down hard on the film, saying:
“To [celebrities] it’s a paycheck and these people just don’t care. They are terribly hurtful to the actual family and all the living victims. They don’t give a shit”.
She went on to specifically criticize stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, accusing them of “throwing all their social responsibility to the wind.

Need to catch up? Check out our previous Fargo recap here.
You’d think every Fargo character would know that rule pretty well by now, but someone had to learn it the hard way this week.
Ray’s out of a job, and he and Nikki lost their high-roller bridge sponsor when Ray blew off their dinner, so they’re forced to come up with another get-rich scheme — and yes, it involves more wigs. Ray poses as Emmit again and films a sex tape with Nikki (who’s wearing a long red “hooker wig”), placing it in an envelope on...

The trouble with John Leonetti’s Wolves At The Door is that it doesn’t quite know what it wants to be or for whom it is exactly aimed at. The film has what could admittedly be considered as one of the most terrifying opening scenes in a horror movie you’ll see this year, but sadly for its makers, it ends up leaving a bad taste in the mouth and some serious questions about the morality of such an undertaking.
Written by Gary Dauberman (Annabelle), Wolves At The Door is loosely based on the murders of Hollywood actress Sharon Tate and her friends at the hands of the Manson Family (a murderous cult lead by Charles Milles Manson) in the summer of 1969. The film itself never explicitly gives away who these characters really are, until the end credits, hoping instead to capitalise on a new generation...
