The most controversial film of 2024 has already been released and is attracting criticism from all sides. Written and directed by the visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Civil War has proven to be a massive hit for the A24. Civil War has everything you need including striking visuals, a gripping story, and complex characters. While there are people from both sides of the political aisle criticizing the film for not picking a side, I think that Garland did a wonderful job at showing us a broken America without blaming any political party for it.
Civil War is set in a dystopian future America suffering from a civil war as a team of military-embedded journalists race against time to get to Washington D.C. to interview the President before rebel factions take over the White House and kill the President. While the film is about a lot of hot topics that...

At first, I was shocked by the news that Participant Media was dying. Such an appealing company. Smart. Mindful. Vibrant. Forward-thinking. The producer of intelligent films like Spotlight and Green Book, with a distinctly progressive message.
How could this be?
Then it finally hit me. Whatever else may have happened—announcing the shutdown, proprietor Jeff Skoll cited “revolutionary” changes in the entertainment business—Participant went under, I believe, because most of high-end Hollywood jumped into the company’s basically sound but modestly sized boat. The purpose-film niche was swamped.
It’s almost hard to remember that 20 years ago, when Participant was founded, the notion of a self-consciously message-oriented, activist film company was actually novel.
But, cinematically speaking, it was a much different world in 2004. The top movie that year was Shrek 2—not much message there. Culturally, the big story was a religious film, The Passion of the Christ. That hasn’t happened since.

Can you use the Film Independent Spirit Awards to predict the Oscars? That's a risky endeavour, but when you consider that last year's Indie Spirit Best Feature Everything Everywhere All At Once went on to win big at the Oscars, hopes are certainly higher for Celine Song's Past Lives' Best Picture chances come 10 March.
Song also picked up Best Director for her emotional tale of reconnection and regret, While Av Rockwell took Best First Feature for A Thousand And One and Co-writer/director Babak Jalali won the John Cassavetes Award for best feature made for under $1 million for Fremont.
The Holdovers took home the most film gongs, nabbing Best Cinematography for Eigil Bryld, a welcome Best Breakthrough Performance for Dominic Sessa and in what should probably this year be renamed the Da’Vine Joy Randolph Award, she won her latest trophy: Best Supporting Performance.

The Sundance Film Festival 2024 brought two fascinating projects surrounding the concept of artificial intelligence.
The first is an ambitious love story set at the end of the world involving two unlikely machines.
The second is a documentary called Eternal You, which examines the merits of bringing dead people back to life using AI.
Both films are captivating for different reasons, and each has something compelling to say about “artificiality.”
Not to mention, one of these might end up being our favorite from Sundance 2024.
Here are our reviews of Love Me and Eternal You from the Sundance Film Festival.
Love Me
Love Me is a film critic’s catnip. There are robots, humor, romance, a dystopia, and a narrative with layers of themes and ideas to decipher.
The film, directed by Sam & Andy Zuchero, is an audacious feature film debut, taking a simplistic concept and making it feel as vast as the movie’s billion-year timeline.

Holiday lights are coming down. From every street corner, Christmas trees lie in abandoned disarray. Right now, you’re probably swearing you’ll never touch a glass of champagne again. Yes, 2023 is well and over, and with that passing comes a chance to turn the page toward what will hopefully be a brighter, sunnier 2024.

While the divisive Thor: Love and Thunder explored a new arc of the Thunder God trying to find meaning and purpose in his position within the universe, the new season of Loki will also give us a new personal journey for the God of Mischief. Disney released the trailer for season 2 two weeks ago. Now, Marvel Studios gives audiences a look behind the scenes with the new featurette. This year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania featured a post-credits sequence showing a variant of Kang the Conqueror putting on a Tesla-esque display in an early 1900s-era setting. The scene looked to serve as a teaser for what’s to come as clips show this season expanding on that moment.
In the new behind-the-scenes video, Tom Hiddleston talks about how this season is all about Loki learning more about himself. The movies have always shown that beneath his villainous exterior,...

When Everything Everywhere All At Once burst into the multiverse, it rocked our cinematic world like never before. Not only did Michelle Yeoh become the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards, Eeaao captured six other Oscars including Best Picture, and both Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Beyond that, Eeaao collectively earned over 300 honors and nominations from film festivals all over the world.
Hot on heels of the Eeaao victory lap, Disney+ announced the debut of American Born Chinese, a miniseries based on a celebrated graphic novel created by Gene Luen Yang in 2006. Yang is an executive producer of this television adaptation. His original graphic novel won tons of accolades including the 2007 Eisner Award and Best Comic of the Year from Publishers Weekly, Time, Amazon, and others. A pioneering exploration of the Asian American experience, American Born Chinese is even used as a teaching aid in schools to this day.

A Freaky Friday sequel is officially in the works at Disney with both Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis set to return, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
No plot details for the film have been shared, but Elyse Hollander is writing the script. Released in 2003, Freaky Friday was already a remake; it originated as a Mary Rodgers novel in 1972, and its first film adaptation followed in 1976. But the Lohan-Curtis version — written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon and directed by Mark Waters — has become a fan favorite thanks to, among many other things, Lohan’s punky Anna, her band Pink Slip, and an incredible scene in which Curtis and Chad Michael Murray sing Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.” It grossed over $160 million worldwide.
Lohan and Curtis have long been willing to reprise their roles in the film, which sees a mother and daughter switch bodies and learn to accept their differences.

Beginning with the thesis statement “does anything really last,” Ian Chaney’s obsessive inquiry The Arc of Oblivion wonders if the act of archiving is really a folly. This leads to exploring natural methods of archiving around us, from limestone layers to synthesizing digital data into DNA. Chaney starts with a problem facing indie filmmakers and obsessive autobiographers: hard drives and digital video fail easily. Although not explored by Chaney, master filmmakers like Martin Scorsese insist on making physical 35mm prints of films they shot digitally and storing them in salt mines rather than on corruptible servers or digital physical media.
A sweeping, often playful odyssey, The Arc of Oblivion seeks out expert help in exploring the nature of archiving, including the gatekeepers who decide what is important to keep record of. Haunted by the spirit of lost footage he filmed one evening while on his parents’ farm––while he...

Several days ago it was reported that Everything Everywhere All at Once directors The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) would helm at least one episode of the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew TV series. I thought that was fun news, but clearly some didn’t as they accused the directing duo of selling out.
Daniel Kwan took to his Instagram Story (via Entertainment Weekly) to address the backlash and explained that they’re only directing one episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. “Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading,” Kwan wrote. “Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series, we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before Eeaao even came out). We love Jon, love Star Wars, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew,...

Going to Disneyland may be a perfectly acceptable way for football players to celebrate a big win, but eyebrows raise when film directors say the same thing. At least that’s a takeaway from the internet’s response to the news that Everything Everywhere All at Once directors Daniels are following their Oscar triumph by working for Disney. The filmmaking duo, consisting of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, this week announced that they would be directing an episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the upcoming series starring Jude Law and created by Spider-Man: No Way Home director John Watts.

Can a festival have swagger? Because it felt like SXSW was swaggering in 2023. This should not be a total surprise for a weeklong conference that’s an intersection between film, television, music, gaming, technology, and arguably innovation itself. As per one industry insider, SXSW has long been perceived as “the cool kids festival.” Nonetheless, one year and a day after Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered on SXSW’s opening night, that film went on to win a staggering seven Oscars on the same weekend as the 2023 festival.

Hollywood – In an emotional and sweeping night at the 95th Oscars, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was everything and everywhere. The film won Best Picture, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor/Actress (Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis) and Best Directors and Original Screenplay for Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (The Daniels).
The highlights were the speeches, especially Quan and Curtis. Quan was a forgotten child actor who believed in a comeback and achieved it to the highest platform, and his emotional speech seemingly captured all of it. Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of Hollywood legends Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, acknowledged that parentage in a memorable “we won the Oscars” speech. In all, after the year of the infamous “slap,” the Oscars came off … as host Jimmy Kimmel quipped … “without a hitch, and without Hitch.”

When Harrison Ford announced Everything Everywhere All At Once as this year’s Oscars Best Picture winner, its star Ke Huy Quan rushed to the stage and immediately leapt into the actor’s arms. Almost four decades ago, the pair had starred together in Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, when Quan was just a child. Ford’s career went from strength to strength. But the roles for Quan soon began to dry up, and he was forced to settle into a career of stunt coordination and assistant directing. Everything Everywhere All At Once wasn’t merely a comeback. It was a second chance at a dream.
So to see Quan, a newly crowned Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor, offered the chance to celebrate with the same man who helped guide him through his very first steps into the industry – well, to quote the actor himself, “they say...

Everything Everywhere All at Once got on a roll early Sunday night at the 95th annual Academy Awards, racking up early Best Supporting Actor and Actress wins for Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis respectively. By the time the ceremony was done three and a half hours later, the indie sci-fi movie about an immigrant woman and laundromat owner who saves the multiverse had racked up seven awards, including nearly all the heavyweights: Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Director (Daniels), Best Original Screenplay (Daniels), Best Editing (Paul Rogers), and, of course, Best Picture.
It felt in some ways like a sea change. Whatever you may think of it, Everything Everywhere All at Once was and is a genuine experiment in ambitious weirdness and unabashed genre filmmaking, a different animal altogether from conventional Best Picture picks of the past like Green Book or elevated arthouse fare like Nomadland. As the credits began to roll at the end of the 2023 Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel walked to the side of the stage, where somebody had placed an industrial workplace sign reading “Number of Oscars Telecasts Without an Incident,” and he triumphantly flipped the “00” to “01.”

Thanks to the auteur theory, as advanced by upstart French theorists at the influential film journal Cahiers du Cinéma in the '50s and '60s, we've fallen into the habit of viewing movies as the work of a singular artist. Of course, this theory is sound when we're discussing the work of Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Ingmar Bergman -- they had an identifiable visual style and revisited the same themes from film to film. The same applies to Boomer directors like Brian De Palma, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese, or modern masters like Quentin Tarantino, Kelly Reichardt, and Spike Lee.
On the set of a film, the director is head honcho, and the Directors Guild of America has fought hard to make sure the moviegoing public understands this. The director is the final name in the opening credits and gets a prominent placement on the poster. Sometimes, if they so choose,...

Tonight's Oscars promise a big night for "Everything Everywhere All At Once," the mind-melting masterpiece currently on track to take the Academy Awards by storm. All awards season long, the film has been picking up wins across the board, so it's entering the Oscars with 11 nominations and pretty solid odds for snagging more gilded trophies. In other words, this is the perfect moment to consider what comes next for its potential winners.
Just in time for the big night, Disney+ has released a teaser for "American Born Chinese," the action-comedy that coincidentally stars all four members of the Wang household: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and James Hong.
Unintentionally, the series has become a family reunion for the stars of "Everything Everywhere All At Once," with Yeoh and Quan headlining this adaptation of cartoonist Gene Luen Yang's acclaimed graphic novel. The series will follow a teenage...

"The gate between Earth and Heaven is opening..." "The fate of your world hangs in the balance." Disney+ has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a new streaming series titled American Born Chinese, arriving to watch this summer. The title comes directly from the graphic novel of the same name from Gene Luen Yang. It seems as if Disney decided to jump on the Everything Everywhere All at Once hype, bringing back the four stars of that film and letting them work with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton to create this action series. It follows Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high-school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student at school, even more worlds collide in his life... The series stars Ben Wang as Jin Wang, along with an epic cast: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu,...

The Oscar buzz for Michelle Yeoh and her Best Actress nomination for Everything Everywhere All At Once has been a long time coming. After achieving stardom overseas in a series of Hong Kong action films in which she did many of her own stunts, Yeoh began to cross over in 1997 when she appeared opposite Pierce Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies.
The next year — which was two years before her international breakout performance in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon — the actress’s profile in Hollywood rose quite literally when she agreed to do a shoot with photographer Joe McNally for National Geographic in which she soared over the Hollywood Sign.
McNally later explained the genesis the concept: “The story was termed ‘The Globalization of Culture,’ and it examined the rapid rate of the exchange of cultural items and icons, worldwide, via the hyper fast engines of TV, movies, fashion,...

Ke Huy Quan has revealed just how impactful Everything Everywhere All At Once has been on his career.
Since the Oscar-nominated film’s release, the Vietnamese actor has experienced a tremendous Hollywood comeback.
However, before the multiverse drama’s theatrical release in March 2022, which was delayed by Covid for two years after they wrapped filming in March 2020, Quan said nobody would hire him.
During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the 51-year-old former child actor explained that after they filmed the movie, he was auditioning for several roles but could “not get a single job”.
“This is 2021, and I was so nervous. I was about to lose my health insurance,” Quan said. “So I called my agent and I said, ‘Can you please get me anything? It doesn’t matter, I just need one job to make the minimum requirement so I can qualify for health insurance the following year.

In what may be the most difficult-to-predict score competition in years, the original-music Oscar could go to a sentimental favorite, a past nominee or the newcomer to the race. Academy members begin voting today.
Legendary composer John Williams broke records again by becoming the most nominated living person, earning the highest number of nominations ever in the music categories, and becoming the oldest nominee ever for a competitive award. He is 91.
His nomination for “The Fabelmans” surprised some outsiders, as his fairly spare score is often overshadowed by the several classical pieces performed by Mitzi (Michelle Williams), the character based on director Steven Spielberg’s piano-playing mom. But it passed the 35% rule — that is, more than a third of the total musical content must be original dramatic score — or it would have been disqualified by the Academy’s strict music-branch executive committee.
Williams is enjoying more acclaim than ever, not...

Awards season is celebrating Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All At Once leading up to Oscar night. The Criterion Channel is celebrating Yeoh’s martial arts legacy with eight of her Chinese films added in the month of March. Showbiz Cheat Sheet recommends all eight, but here’s a guide to the films Criterion Channel selected.
Michelle Yeoh | Peter Pau/Sony Pictures Classics ‘Yes, Madam!’ Was the one that started it all for Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh had supporting roles in two movies before taking the lead of Yes, Madam! The female police actioner launched an entire series that took on the name In the Line of Duty from part three, after Yeoh had left. The first entry teams Yeoh up with Cynthia Rothrock, playing a British cop, with unbelievable fight scenes against modern day criminals.

Your local Asian American sitcom funnyman veteran Randall Park is graduating from acting on TV to directing his own feature-length film! Shortly after "Everything Everywhere All at Once" dominated the 2023 Oscar nominations, Park's directorial debut "Shortcomings," made its humble premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
The timing here is miraculous considering the subject material of Park's film. "Shortcomings," based on the 2007 graphic novel of the same name (its author Adrian Tomine returns to write the screenplay), centers on a group of young Bay Area Asian Americans. Coincidentally, the film opens on a spoof of "Crazy Rich Asians," for which Park's protagonist, Ben, a film school dropout and art-house manager expresses a large distaste. Ben's girlfriend, Miko (Ally Maki) tries to comfort Ben by arguing that the rom-com could be the jumping-off point for something fresher and "artsier" down the line.

If one thing's been made clear over the years, it's that there is no one way for filmmakers and storytellers of all stripes to chart their own journeys to Hollywood. In fact, it seems like the more idiosyncratic and exciting a talent they are, the more unexpected and unique their path to putting a foot through the door and finding success appears to be. It’s been three years since Paramount first announced the development of a new Star Trek series starring the incomparable Michelle Yeoh. The as-of-yet untitled spin-off has been presented as a story that will follow Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou in her work as part of Section 31, the covert intelligence organization that works autonomously within the Federation and was first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. While we first heard word of this spin-off in 2019, the show has yet to come to fruition, even after Georgiou’s Star Trek: Discovery exit last season. Now, we finally have an update…
“We are still in development on Section 31, so there will be more news on that soon,” said Paramount+ Original Scripted Series President Nicole Clemens during the Paramount+ Executive Session during today’s TCA Winter Tour. The news was vague, but hopeful, especially considering Paramount+ has greenlit so many other Star Trek shows,...

Tristan Eaton’s art has travelled many places. It’s gone into space. It’s gone to the Super Bowl, emblazoning the game’s tickets in 2020. It’s found a home at Universal Studios, where the artist painted murals of classic Universal monsters in 2019. And his large-scale murals have covered walls in cities around the world, from New York, Los Angeles and Honolulu to Paris, Cozumel and Berlin.
Now a two-floor, 25-year retrospective of the artist and toy designer’s colorful pop-influenced work, titled “Tristan Eaton: All at Once,” has just opened at the Long Beach ...

Selena Gomez has released a brand new song—and fans see Justin Bieber all over it. On Thursday, Jan. 14, the singer dropped a Spanish-language single, "De Una Vez," mere hours after she teased the new music on social media. "This is the beginning of something I've wanted to explore for so long," she told fans on Instagram. "I hope you love it as much as I do." Naturally, Selenators got to work decoding the lyrics, which for some meant tapping into their translation skills. Listeners have since deduced that the track, which roughly translates to "All at Once," tackles themes of overcoming heartbreak, survival, identity and independence, similar to those of her...

Clover is a crime action/comedy about a couple of Irish American brothers on the run from a Italian American crime boss, in the company of a precocious girl named Clover. The girl is there to make us think of Kick Ass, but Clover mines a host of other films in the crime action/comedy genre, pretty much to a fault. While the tropes are familiar, Clover puts them together well enough to present a serviceable popcorn entertainment for some audiences. It’s no Snatch, but it might do in a pinch for an afternoon of stay-at-home distraction, if you don’t expect too much..
Clover is not as clever as it thinks it is but it benefits from a strong cast, who provide much of the reason to watch it. Directed by Jon Abrahams...
