Not a calamity and not an episode to be too hostile towards
TheLittleSongbird5 April 2021
"Hostiles and Calamities" was watched with fairly mixed expectations. Was looking forward to see some development to Dwight and a subplot revolving around him, and to see some answers explaining the truth of previous events (i.e. Who helped Daryl escape). At the same time, when you have a story that has heavy emphasis on a character that generally did not do much for you beforehand and when the episode was at a point where Negan was already starting too feel overused.

Thankfully, "Hostiles and Calamities" was a little better than expected. It is far from Season 7, mostly a disappointing season, at its worst but it also doesn't feel enough like a return to form. Did appreciate the development to both Eugene and Dwight, that answers were provided and that things continued to progress, but did also find myself reasonably mixed on both subplots (one more so on the other). "Hostiles and Calamities" is far from a calamity of an episode and not one to be too hostile towards, but it also doesn't wow me.

Dwight's subplot to me fared better though could have been fleshed out and featured more. He was always, and still is at this point, a far more interesting character than Eugene for a start, with some great well written conflict. He is well fleshed out here and Austin Amelio has a thrillingly and also movingly intense presence as the character. It is also the subplot where the most questions were answered. Having said that, it also felt on the repetitive side and like it was reiterating things we already knew or suspected.

Eugene's was just as mixed. Did appreciate that Eugene was portrayed as more than a coward and that he goes on a journey as a character and in motivation. His motivation morally also struck me as plausible. Josh McDermitt plays Eugene very well and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is menacing as Negan, who even goes as far to committ a horrific act of violence that shocked me (one would understandably think that this moment was not necessary). It does though slow the episode down pace wise, one can argue too that it slows the momentum of the season when it was starting to get somewhere, and doesn't quite progress enough. It was also not so easy to invest in it when it was heavily focused on a character that was not an interesting enough and at times extraneous one for a long time and still isn't. Which is problematic as it is the more prominent of the two, actually think it is too heavily focused on, and is not always as thrilling or as tense as it should be.

What both stories have in common is that a lot of the usual good things are done extremely well. It is stylish and atmospheric visually and hauntingly scored. The script doesn't ramble and has tautness, Negan's dialogue isn't as long winded as it tends to be and there is definitely dark tension in particularly the Dwight storyline and a sense of foreboding in the latter stages of Eugene's. All the acting is extremely good, especially from Amelio and McDermitt.

Concluding, impressive in a lot of areas but uneven. 6/10.

A good episode -
ottawa10127 February 2017
This is what makes the Walking Dead a good show. The development of the characters and how they survive. Both Eugene and Dwight use manipulation of their circumstances to survive yet it is clear, there is an end to the means. Hopefully the series moves along a little quicker however. Season 7 has been really 2-3 episodes of progress spread over 11 shows.

The Eugene Episode We Didn't Think We Wanted
bobcobb30127 February 2017
Look, I have legitimate gripes with a lot of people on this show, but Eugene still probably takes the cake as my least favorite character. That being said, this was a solid episode that gave us an extended look at how the Saviors truly operate. We don't know whether Eugene is good or bad right now (probably still good) but an old-fashioned pro- wrestling heel turn would be the kind of fun twist this program needs.

Eugene

Warning: Spoilers
The Walking Dead has had its boring and unneeded episodes that focus on one character who is away from the main group (ahem, the Tara episode), but this was not one of them. Watching Eugene instantly flip sides to kiss Negan's feet was a real insight into his character. And what is he going to do? Is he going to be the angsty tortured soul turned evil menace, or is this all an act? Is he sly enough to pull this off? Does his loyalty to Rick run deep? We are left not knowing for sure, and this is the beauty of it all. I hate the way the Walking Dead has been separating story lines and giving us entire episodes centered on individual characters, but this was different because I find myself eager to find out what is going to happen with this bit of the story.

Beyond Redemption?
ThomasDrufke27 February 2017
It had been a bit since we've seen Negan, Dwight, and Eugene, but we got a whole dosage of them last night as Eugene officially sold out to Negan and Dwight seemed to pass at his final shot at redemption.

Overall, this episode felt a little repetitive. We already watched Daryl go through his trials and tribulations under Negan's control and we've certainly seen Dwight go through his fair share of chances to redeem himself. On the other hand, the differences between Daryl and Eugene are great, and that was made very clear in this episode. I'm glad we have someone like Eugene on the show, but this was some Father Gabriel level cowardice shown by the supposed genius. I shouldn't have expected anything different with his character, but I really thought we were done getting beat down by Negan. I'm ready for him to have a setback or two.

Which is where Dwight's arc comes into play. This could have been the perfect time for Dwight to jump ship and join the survivors. Would I have been there to welcome him with open arms? No. But with everything that has happened to him, I was really hoping he would have his own redemption arc beginning with this episode. Sure, he lied about his wife being dead and her writing the note to Daryl, but couldn't he have just walked away from this life? Perhaps he has a plan for Negan, but it sure doesn't feel like it right now.

So as much as I enjoyed seeing Eugene hang with Negan's wives playing Yar's Revenge or whatever that was, Eugene giving Negan more ideas for armoring up walkers, and a whole lot of pickles, I felt like this episode was a missed opportunity. It's also worth mentioning that there's only 5 episodes left, so I can only assume the "war" will take place next season. Frustrating, but nothing out of the ordinary for The Walking Dead.

+More Dwight material

-But no redemption for him

-Eugene kissing up to Negan

Whenever Negan is featured, this show gets better. The depth this character adds to TWD is exactly what this series needed. While not the main character in this episode, it is intriguing to see how a character like Eugene changes under Negans arm. As someone who has read the comics (don't worry, no spoilers!), this episode is an interesting take on that character arc. As with every 'individual character episode', this lacked a bit of depth for me. It was cool to see Dwight eventually finding out about Sherry and it will be interesting to see where the final few episodes take us till next season when surely, the war will be triggered.

+ Unique story-line not seen in the comics, which could alter the Eugene character we know and love + Eugene's credentials are backed up with his science experiments - TWD is clearly stretching out what it can from the comics so it doesn't surpass them

The episode is notable for its exploration of morality and ethics, as Eugene is forced to make difficult choices in order to survive in his new environment
fernandoschiavi20 March 2024
As Dwight is being punished for letting Daryl escape, Eugene is brought to the Sanctuary. Much to Eugene's surprise, he is treated as a guest. He is given a private apartment, and any food he wants. Eugene, under intimidation, comes up with an idea for how to keep the Walkers from falling off the Sanctuary's protective fence. He proposes using molten metal, which will harden and make the Walkers indestructible.

Eugene is later visited by some of Negan's wives, as a reward for his services so far. The ladies ask him to make poison pills for them, which he later deduces are for Negan. He makes the pills, but then changes his mind and refuses to let the women have them. Eugene reluctantly accepts his new role in the Saviors, knowing that it means his old friends will become his enemies.

Dwight figures out that Sherry let Daryl out and then fled. After Dr. Emmett Carson makes an unkind comment about Sherry, Dwight frames the man for helping Daryl. Negan forces a (false) confession out of Carson, before throwing him into the furnace.

"Hostiles and Calamities" follows Eugene as he adjusts to life at the Savior compound. The episode is notable for its exploration of morality and ethics, as Eugene is forced to make difficult choices in order to survive in his new environment. The episode also explores themes of power and control, as Eugene must decide whether to align himself with Negan and the Saviors or risk his own safety by resisting them.

One of the most memorable scenes in the episode is when Eugene is given the opportunity to create a weapon for the Saviors and uses his knowledge to impress them. This moment highlights Eugene's resourcefulness and intelligence, as he uses his skills to gain favor with his captors. The tension builds as Eugene navigates the complex politics of the Savior compound and tries to find a way to survive without compromising his principles.

The episode is also notable for its exploration of Dwight's character, as it delves into his backstory and the reasons behind his loyalty to Negan. Dwight's interactions with Eugene shed light on the complexities of their relationship and the choices they have made in order to survive in this new world.

Return to factory mode!
benyaminshakeri-0485624 January 2024
After watching some excellent and quality episodes, this time I saw a monotonous and lack of excitement episode. But it's not a big problem because the excellent performance of the previous 4 episodes can partially offset the weakness of this episode! Well, after a long time of seeing only one story line shown in an episode, well I don't like that very much and I believe that the story lines should be progressing at the same time, because TWD is actually more successful that way and this The issue has been proven many times. The elegance and transparency of Eugene's acting was completely palpable and visible, this actor has a wonderful performance and has shown it to us many times. This episode could have moved the story lines forward like the previous few episodes but it didn't, and it wasn't as interesting as the early episodes. I don't know why the creators believe in this kind of show, I don't like it at all. I give this episode a 7.

Eugene in a Bottle
TheFearmakers10 November 2022
The greatest bottle episode ever with Eugene basically becoming to Negan what Milton was to The Governor, and as we all know Negan is a leather-clad Governor, isn't as scary or interesting, in fact his men would... or one of his men would... kill him by sleeping with his/their wives, that would be it... Negan is a complete plot-hole of a villain, and his group calling themselves Negan is a SPARTACUS ripoff...

But... this is a great episode and one of Negan's best as he does in fact have great polar opposite, odd couple chemistry with Eugene and it's great watching the mullet-haired brain becoming more important and, basically, free and comfortable than he was with the good.

How Much more can we take?
scaryoutcome128 February 2017
I wasn't even going to write a review on this as it isn't worth a review. That being said, when the Tara episode aired at the beginning of the season I was like oh my god, I hope there won't be any more episodes based around one or a few select people. How I was wrong. The thing about doing a whole episode based around one of the most boring characters in the entire show, not to mention you can barely understand the nonsense that comes out of Eugene's mouth makes the show infuriatingly impossible to watch, and/or have any connection to the episode. I think the idea was that the creators thought that by having Dwight and a little Negan would make the show bearable. WRONG

I vote 3/10 for wasting my time

Warning: Spoilers
Even though I am madly in love with Eugenius Porter, this episodes was not very good. But then again, it's Eugenius so I think this episode is at least an 8. The episode starts off with Dwight and some Saviors finding Fat Joey's dead body. Dwight realizes that Daryl is missing and searches for him. Meanwhile, Eugene is taken to a room where Laura (the Savior who flirted with Spencer) asks him what he wants to eat. Eugenius asks for some pickles because he says that he likes pickles but they are all out so he gets canned pasta with tomato sauce instead. He then vibes to Easy Street while waiting for his food. Also, I'm pretty sure I saw a jar of pickles in the refrigerator in his room. Meanwhile, Dwight is in his room looking at the note that Sherry left for Daryl when some Saviors break in and beat him up and Negan watches. Dwight is thrown into the same cell Daryl was locked in. Negan talks to him through the other side and says that Sherry is missing. Dwight is sent out by Negan to go find her. Later, Laura gives Eugene a tour and gives him a huge jar of pickles before bringing him before Negan. Eugenius Porter shows Negan that he indeed is a genius and shows him how to prevent the walkers that are trapped to the fence thing from falling apart. As a token of gratitude, Negan sends over some of his wives to Eugene's room. Later that night, instead of doing anything with Negan's wives, Eugenius Porter plays video games while they watch. Eugene starts flirting with science. On of them asks if he can make a bomb out of two things I don't remember. Eugene says he can't and then lists all of the things he would need to be able to do that. They provide him those things. I can't describe what he does because I am not a highly intelligent individual such as Eugenius Porter but he explodes two balloons. Meanwhile, Dwight searches his old home for Sherry. He finds a note that says she ran away. Back at The Sanctuary, 2 of the three wives return. They say that the other wive, Amber, doesn't want to live anymore and asks Eugenius Porter to make something that will kill her in her sleep. Eugene agrees and later he goes to get some of the stuff required which is when he obtains Gremblygunk. Later, Eugene is taken to that one room with all the other Saviors. Negan accuses Dr. Carson of letting Daryl go so that he could become closer with Sherry. Negan then throws him into the furnace. Later, the wives come into Eugenius's room asking for the pills to kill Amber. Eugene says he has made them but that they are for Negan. They say that they are going to tell Negan. Later, when we see Eugenius eating a pickle, we hear Negan's knock. He opens the door and Negan is standing there looking angrily. This scene was actually very suspenseful. Negan was just there to ask Eugenius if he is Negan. Eugenius delivers the funniest line before Negan can finish asking the question. "I'm Negan. I'm utterly, completely, stone-cold Negan. I was Negan before I even met you. I just needed to meet you properly to know". The next morning, we see Eugenius commanding some Saviors to pour the molten metal onto the walkers while eating a pickle with Gremblygunk in his pocket as the episode ends. This episode was entertaining, funny, and actually had a plot. It shows Eugene becoming a member of The Saviors which is important and it shows Dwight lying about killing Sherry which is also important later on. Underrated even though I'm biased.

I Am Negan
claudio_carvalho26 February 2017
The coward Eugene is brought to the Savior's Sanctuary and Dwight finds that Daryl has escaped. Negan suspects that Sherry is the responsible and sends Dwight to hunt her down. He does not find Sherry, but discovers a note she wrote to him telling that she had released Daryl. Dwight returns to the Sanctuary and tells that he killed Sherry. Further, he frames Dr. Carson for the escape of Daryl. Meanwhile Eugene decides to cooperate with Negan.

"Doctor" Eugene Porter is together with Father Gabriel the most expendable characters of "The Walking Dead". "Hostiles and Calamities" is an episode dedicated to this coward and useless character; therefore absolutely forgettable. My vote is five.

As bad as an episode can get
larosat6 March 2017
The show has finally reached a point of no return in ineptitude. What the creators are thinking, I can't possibly fathom. When you have an ensemble; then you feature at least some of them during part of the episode. To feature a third of the episode on the most uninteresting character in the history of TV ( Dwight ) series suicide. The show has lost almost half its audience. Negan the worst, weakest looking villain in a long time doesn't help. If I wasn't aware of the upcoming Negan War; I would definitely throw in the towel. Total trash.

What happens to TWD?
Mr_OSCAR-9913 August 2022
Imagine wasting 48 minutes of your life for an episode about the worst character (Eugene), I can't stand looking at Eugene's face for one minute. He's a weak provocative and cowardly character, I can't believe they got rid of the good characters like Glenn and Abraham and left us this coward, are the ideas for the writers of the series finished? Season7 is the worst season I've watched in TV history.

it's amazing how fast 48 min goes by!
Ahmed_Alzahaf126 February 2017
the very idea of me waiting a whole week for an episode like this one in completely irritating, a whole episode about Eugene like we got 100 episodes per season, i was good with dedicating an episode about Tara before, but sorry this episode is awful, not only this episode was dull but there was absolutely not indication about any plans or possibilities for the future episodes, when Tara go to the Oceanside group, one can wonder if this group would team up with Rick at least you can let you imagination run wild, what could i possibly conclude out of this episode?

absolutely nothing!!

my rating is 5
