Before his foray into the wrestling arena and taking on the title of United States Championship in WWE, Logan Paul had ambitions to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially gaining recognition through his social media presence and YouTube content, Paul has since expanded his career into acting, and wrestling and has also achieved notable success as an entrepreneur.

The YouTuber movie is one that's often been considered very specific. Usually, they are comedies that star and/or are made by a YouTube content creator specifically to appease their fanbase. None of these are what you can consider future Oscar contenders, but as long as they succeed in satisfying their target audience, they'll be perfectly fine. Right?
If the history of these movies is anything to go by though, a ton of YouTuber movies aren't particularly successful in winning this niche fanbase, let alone general audiences. In a way, it almost seems like the sheer amount of terrible movies with a YouTuber's name on them has set back one of YouTube's primary appeals in the first place. This is, of course, the platform's unique ability to allow creatives to find a platform for their work, eventually building up to bigger projects.

Logan Paul, the YouTube personality and podcaster who has also dabbled in boxing most recently fighting former world champion Floyd Mayweather to a draw in a pay-per-view exhibition match, has signed with WME.
In addition to his nascent boxing career, Paul hosts the ImPaulsive podcast featuring celebrity guests, athletes, comedians and more. It has more than 2.7 million followers on YouTube, which has been his primary platform after getting his start posting short videos on the now-shuttered Vine.
YouTube and Paul have had a contentious partnership; the platform suspended ads on Paul’s channel at least twice, both in 2018, once for posting video from a trip to Japan’s Aokigahara forest in which he encountered a suicide victim, and another for posting a video of himself tasing a dead rat. He later apologized for both incidents and was eventually reinstated. His main YouTube channel now has more that 23 million subscribers.

What happens when an aging heartthrob accidentally sleeps with his daughter’s new girlfriend the day before officially meeting her? That’s the premise of “Funny Story,” a new comedy from Maker Studios co-founder Michael Gallagher. It sounds like a bit of a problematic premise, but also a potentially hilarious one. An exclusive new trailer shows that “Funny Story” could offer a fresh take on the love triangle rom-com, with an added queer twist.
The official synopsis reads: “Walter Campbell (Matthew Glave) is an aging heartthrob struggling to keep up appearances— especially with his estranged adult daughter, Nic (Jana Winternitz). In an attempt to reconnect with his family, he invites himself to crash her vacation in Big Sur. Offering a ride to her friend Kim (Emily Bett Rickards), the two bond in unexpected ways that are sure to ruin the lives of everyone in their path.”

Famous and infamous YouTuber Logan Paul has released his 2018 wrap-up video, looking back on his controversial behavior in a year he says was the “most important” of his life.
In the 15-minute upload (which has netted 3.2 million views in the day since it was posted), Paul reflects on the infamous January incident where he posted a vlog filmed in Japan’s “suicide forest” that contained footage of the body of an apparent suicide victim. The video received major backlash, getting him cut from Google Preferred and leading YouTube to cancel the sequel film to his YouTube Premium movie The Thinning (although it was announced in October that YouTube ultimately decided to move forward with the release of the project).
According to Paul, the vlog destroyed his "image" and severed “every professional relationship I had.” (His brother Jake Paul, who was not involved in the Aokigahara vlog, revealed in Shane Dawson...

YouTube has concluded that its investments in original programming should have a home on the free, ad-supported side — not just tucked behind a paywall.
In a shift in strategy, the Google-owned video platform said that starting next year it will move to make all of its new original programming available for free for anyone to watch. With the change, YouTube is moving toward more mainstream celebrity-driven and creator-based reality fare, while it will continue to greenlight scripted productions.
Until now, YouTube Originals have mainly been available on its YouTube Premium subscription service, although YouTube also has expanded the shows and movies it makes available on an ad-supported basis.
“As we look to 2019, we will continue to invest in scripted programming and shift to make our YouTube Originals ad supported to meet the growing demand of a more global fanbase,” a YouTube rep said in a statement. “This next phase...

Let’s start out with the actual show before we go into why it might not be coming back anytime soon. So The Thinning, starring Logan Paul, the famous YouTuber that millions of people have decided to make famous, is a rather bleak look at a dystopian future in which natural resources are just about depleted and the overpopulation of the earth has forced the Un to send out a decree to every country that per a single standardized test, those that are deemed intelligent enough to pass will survive, while those that fail will be executed. Sounds almost like something

Seemingly out of nowhere, YouTube Premium moved forward last week with the sequel to Logan Paul’s dystopian feature The Thinning -- a project that was put on hold 10 months ago after the 23-year-old notoriously vlogged a suicide victim in Japan. YouTube justified the decision as being made in fairness to the cast and crew of The Thinning: New World Order -- as well as to fans of the film franchise.
Now, PewDiePie -- another top YouTube star who saw the cancellation his Premium series, Scare PewDiePie, in the wake of objectionable behavior -- is decrying YouTube’s decision to premiere Paul’s project while his own remains shelved. “It’s kind of amazing how a billion dollar company can be so inept at leadership,” Kjellberg said in a recent video on his channel, which is -- for now -- the most-subscribed hub on all of YouTube. “If you want to be taken seriously,...

YouTube has taken another step toward reinstalling online internet star Logan Paul since he posted video of a suicide victim, for which he was widely criticized. After being on hold for 10 months, “The Thinning: New World Order,” which stars Paul, is now streaming on YouTube’s subscription-based video on-demand service (Svod).
YouTube delayed the release of the film back in January when Paul came under fire for filming and then posting to YouTube a video of a suicide victim. The YouTube sensation filmed video of a deceased body while walking through Aokigahara forest in Japan, a location that has come to be known as the “Suicide Forest” due to the high number of people who go to the forest to take their own lives.

Updated throughout The Thinning: New World Order, starring Logan Paul, is now available to stream on YouTube Premium, producers have announced.
Legendary Digital Studios, YouTube Premium and Entertainment One (eOne) announced a “surprise drop” of the sequel to the 2016 thriller, though any surprise was spoiled last night by Paul, who posted a trailer on his YouTube channel.
The YouTube Original movie starring the controversial Paul arrives after a nearly year-long punitive shelving. The Thinning: New World Order, a sequel to the The Thinning, launched today on YouTube Premium after a literally winking Paul posted the trailer and a message to his 18.6 million subscribers last night.

Controversial YouTube star Logan Paul headlined YouTube Premium’s first feature-length dystopian thriller The Thinning -- which premiered in Oct. 2016 and was enough of a success for the fledgling service that it promptly ordered a sequel.
But that film, titled The Thinning: New World Order, was put on hold earlier this year after Paul notoriously vlogged the body of a man who had committed suicide. At the time and in the wake of continue egregious behavior, YouTube punished Paul in several ways: all ads were temporarily suspended on his channel for 18 days, Paul was removed from the lucrative Google Preferred ad program (for which his channels remain ineligible to this day), he was axed him from the fourth season of the YouTube Premium comedy Foursome, and put post-production for New World Order was placed on hold.

Fanjoy, one of the foremost proprietors of influencer merchandise -- which has shipped more than 1 million items to date alongside savvy hawkers including Jake Paul, David Dobrik, and Casey Neistat -- is taking a decidedly more fashion-forward approach with its latest collaboration.

Tim Shey, most recently head of YouTube’s scripted original programming, has moved back into the startup world after leaving Google earlier this year.
Shey has been hired at language-learning app startup Duolingo, where he’s head of studios and content. In a 2015 interview with Business Insider, then-rising Vine star and vlogger Logan Paul said that he wanted to be “the biggest entertainer in the world.”
“That’s my deal,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get that.”
Two years later, he was making international headlines, though probably not how he had imagined. While in Japan recording his “Adventures in Tokyo” vlogs, Paul and his friends found the body of a man who had committed suicide in the Aokigahara forest. He uploaded the video to his YouTube channel. At the time, he had 15 million subscribers.
A day and over 6 million views later, the video was taken down and Paul became a pariah on social media, accused of trivializing suicide for web traffic as many demanded that YouTube take action and suspend his channel. Instead, the platform removed Paul from their Preferred Partners and YouTube Red programs. Most recently,...

Logan Paul’s YouTube Originals projects are on “indefinite hold,” YouTube executives confirmed at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday — but they would not say that the platform had cut ties with him permanently and did not rule out working with him in the future.
YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl and head of original programming Susanne Daniels told reporters that when incidents arise involving YouTube talent, what’s most important is to “protect the community” of YouTube creators, advertisers, and viewers.
“We believe [Paul] made unfortunate missteps,” Kyncl told reporters. “Actions should speak louder than words and Logan has the opportunity to prove that.”
After uploading a tone-deaf and offensive video shot in Japan’s “suicide forest” last month, Paul’s appearances in the upcoming new season of the YouTube Originals series “Foursome” and a sequel to the 2016 film “The Thinning” were canceled. Meanwhile, the YouTube star has taken...

YouTube personality Logan Paul has found himself in hot water after exploiting a suicide victim for the sake of his vlogging, and now people are demanding that he be banned from the streaming platform. The All-American babyfaced bro Logan Paul made a name for himself on the soon-to-be defunct platform with physical comedy routines condensed into three beats for six-second videos that tell their own mini-stories. Following in the longstanding tradition of Buster Keaton, his pratfalls and dumb jock persona have much more in common with Jim Carrey and the “Jackass” guys.

Jake Paul has amassed more than five million followers on Vine and almost five million likes on Facebook. In the last year, the 19-year-old landed a Disney Channel gig on its series, Bizaardvark, and moved into a West Hollywood home with his friends and collaborators, Team 10. This month, he published a memoir: You Gotta Want It.
Still, Paul has been mostly known for his Vine videos until this point, with more than 1.5 billion loops on the platform. On Thursday, Twitter announced it would be shutting down Vine, though there was no rampant outcry from Paul. He simply tweeted, “Revines? Anyone?”
“I believe the social media trend is kind of just at its infancy and that there's so much more to do and conquer in this space,” he told Et during an interview on Facebook Live Monday. “My goal there on the business side of things is to become the Dr. Dre of social media. He was mentoring...

Andy Warhol famously predicted that in the future, everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. In the case of Vine, however, that formula was often reduced to six seconds. The video-sharing app’s popularity, however, lasted just a little bit longer.
Twitter announced today that it is shutting down the service, which the social-media giant bought in 2012. Vine gave users a platform to share six seconds of video that would play on an automatic loop. It quickly became a destination for comedians, musicians, artists, and filmmakers, many of whom pushed the app’s video capabilities to creative heights. Others used it more like a condensed YouTube channel, posting condensed comedy sketches for a generation reared on short attention spans. More popular users gained millions of followers and launched careers steeped in lucrative marketing deals. But once Twitter and Facebook began offering their own video-sharing capabilities, Vine struggled to find a broader user base.

With the September 23, 2017 debut of Dirty 30 and the September 26 premiere of Laid in America, Hollywood has presented us with two studio-backed low-budget films featuring many prominent social-media influencers. Traditional Hollywood has finally joined, to borrow influencer Michelle Glavan’s phrase, “the YouTube movie circuit.”
That means traditional studios are finally trying a newish model for making and marketing films that are the polar opposite of their usual blockbuster behemoths. The model emerged about three years ago, when indie producers and multichannel networks like AwesomenessTV tapped squadrons of influencers for roles in films such as Expelled and Camp Takota. This model has resulted in small films that typically are profitable, relatively low risk, and can connect with young audiences who otherwise ignore traditional studios.
Previously, the big media companies focused more on buying up multichannel networks (e.g. Maker Studios, Machinima, Collective Digital Studios) and tapping influencers to promote their products.

With the success of shows like “black-ish,” “The Carmichaels,” and Issa Rae’s “Insecure” hitting HBO next week, it seems networks are finally coming (back) around to the black sitcom. Taking note of the trend are YouTube Red and Buzzfeed, who have partnered to produce “Broke,” a new sitcom from creator Quinta Brunson about three millennial friends trying to make it in Los Angeles.
The premise may not be groundbreaking (especially for a web series), but the characters are. Brunson plays Miloh, a laidback aspiring writer who lives with her two best friends, Mo (Maurice Williams) and Paul (Paul Dupree), and there is no trace of sexual tension between the three characters — a notably refreshing absence.
A focus on relationships isn’t the only thing thankfully missing from “Broke”: It also manages to find humor without relying on black caricatures or stereotypes.

The content that has become available through the paid streaming subscription service YouTube Red has kicked into high gear in 2016, with original movies and TV shows flooding the platform. The latest of these – The Thinning – is released on the service on October 12th 2016, and a new trailer has been released in advance of that debut.
Written and directed by Michael J. Gallagher (Interns), and co-written by Steve Greene (Puppet Cop), this science-fiction horror film focuses on a version of the future in which authorities are taking drastic action as part of an effort to manage population control. Eligibility for continued survival is determined by the administration of a High School aptitude test – and those that fail are disposed of. Evidently, there is something of a student revolt as teenagers attempt to take on the system and save their own lives.

"Are you ready for test day?" YouTube Red has unveiled the first trailer for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller titled The Thinning, from writer/director Michael J. Gallagher. Set in the future, the story focuses on a high school aptitude test that is used to manage the population. Two students, played by Logan Paul and Peyton List, discover the test isn't what it seems and may actually be covering up a bigger conspiracy. This sounds kind of like Logan's Run, but revised to a high school level "aptitude test". The full cast includes Lia Marie Johnson, Calum Worthy, Matthew Glave, Michael Traynor and Ryan Newman. This looks like a mix of Hunger Games and a bunch of other much better sci-fi, but that may be why it's direct to VOD. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael J. Gallagher's The Thinning, direct from YouTube: YouTube's The Thinning takes place in...

YouTube Red has released the official trailer for The Thinning, the subscription service’s first-ever feature-length thriller starring digital luminaries Logan Paul and Lia Marie Johnson. Disney star Peyton List and Stacey Dash of Clueless fame round out the cast. The trailer debuted during Tuesday’s Streamy Awards ceremony, and is currently live on Paul’s YouTube channel.
The slick trailer conjures other popular dystopian Ya films like The Hunger Games and Divergent, depicting a future in which the earth has been drained of natural resources and high school students must take an aptitude test to determine whether they will live or die in order to keep populations under control -- a process known as 'The Thinning'. When leading man Paul fails the test, however, he seems to discover that the results have been rigged, leading to an uprising of sorts.

Legendary Pictures has debuted a trailer for The Thinning. The film takes place in a dystopian future, where Us citizens must take a test. If they pass, they live. But, if they fail, they do not survive. The film was developed by director Michael Gallagher (Smiley, 2012). As well, the film stars: Logan Paul, Peyton List and Lia Marie Johnson. The first shocking trailer, for The Thinning, is hosted here. The film's trailer reveals more of the plot, compared to the official synopsis. Both items talk of a conspiracy, which targets the children of political figures. Behind all of the smoke and mirrors, corrupt forces are orchestrating events. It is amazing to see how much new media, targeting young adults, involves dystopic settings. There are no happy endings for the next generation of milennials! More on The Thinning is hosted below. Release Date: October 12th, 2016 (Youtube Red). Director: Michael Gallagher. Cast: Logan Paul,...

Legendary Pictures has unveiled its first look at The Thinning, a dystopian feature film originally announced in November 2015. The Thinning, starring Vine megastar Logan Paul and directed by Michael Gallagher of the TotallySketch channel, was picked up by YouTube in August and represents Red’s first-ever feature length thriller.
In the teaser, which features interviews with Paul and co-star Peyton List (of Disney Channel fame), the plot for The Thinning is revealed to follow a similar formula that has made franchises like The Hunger Games and Divergent into massive hits. “The world is dealing with a big population crisis,” Paul explains, where high school students have to take a test in order to survive. “My character finds out that the whole system is hiding something bigger.”

Nobody can say YouTube’s top comedy channel, Smosh, will never do what “Saturday Night Live” does. It just did.
On August 26th, Smosh aired YouTube’s first ever live sketch show, which clocked in at just under 90 minutes and attracted up a peak concurrent viewership of 55,000 – with an average watch time of fifteen minutes. (YouTube’s broadcast of the Democratic National Convention peaked at 250,000 concurrent viewers, with a twenty-five minute average watch time.)

Logan Paul has written a movie, and it’s going to be big. The Vine star is the figure at the center of Airplane Mode, a project he describes as “an Expendables with Internet stars.”
News of Paul’s latest foray into traditional media comes from Adweek, which profiled him for the cover story of its latest issue. In listing his many accomplishments, Adweek’s article discusses The Thinning, an upcoming film in which Paul will co-star. The publication then discusses Airplane Mode, which it terms “an American Pie for Gen Z.” Paul instead opts for a comparison to The Expendables, which is known for collecting several generations of action movie stars within one over-the-top film. Given that description, we can expect Airplane Mode to feature many of Paul’s fellows within the online video community. While its cast and production calendar are not yet known, Adweek did not that...
