A quote by Angela to Hodgins in this episode: "But this is life. It's hard, and it is painful and it is every day. But we fight."
This is very similar to a quote from Amends (1998), where Buffy tells Angel: "Strong is fighting. It's hard, and it's painful, and it's every day." This Bones episode was directed by David Grossman, who also directed many Buffy episodes, though not the episode where that quote is mentioned.
At the beginning Aubrey and Jessica are seen having just watched seven Star Wars movies. This would have been quite a task, since it would have likely taken around 18 hours to do so. This is a reference to George Lucas' original vision. After the unexpected success of the first Star Wars movie, a reporter asked him if he was planning to do another one. He answered yes, and that he had a total of nine movies planned. This was a stunning statement, as this was before anyone had even thought of planning film trilogies, let alone nine movies. When asked why he was planning to do so many movies, he half-jokingly said he wanted people to be able to walk into a theater and not emerge until 24 hours later, having watched every movie.
This episode aired on May 5th, the day after May 4th, which fans refer to as "Star Wars' Day". "May the fourth be with you" sounds much like "may the Force be with you", the classic line from Star Wars. Aubrey and Jessica had just watched seven Star Wars movies, likely in celebration of Star Wars' Day.
