Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.
Bening always has a commanding screen presence and, in truth, she could play most roles in her sleep, such as is the might of her talent. With “Apples Never Fall,” she is afforded...

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

Today, The Rolling Stones‘ debut album turned 60. Hats off to Mick Jagger and company for staying together this long against all odds! Here’s a look at their debut album’s triumphs and tragedies.
13. ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You’
The lively rhythm here is ruined by some questionable lyrics. In this song, Jagger compares himself to an enslaved person. It’s tasteless, but what would you expect from the same band that would later give us such racist atrocities as “Brown Sugar” and “Some Girls?” At least this song didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 like “Brown Sugar” did.
12. ‘You Can Make It If You Try’
Placed near the end of the album, “You Can Make It If You Try” is a self-empowerment song that feels tedious and endless. The Rolling Stones made it. They tried. This song didn’t help them get there.

Exclusive: Following the end of his long-running daytime syndicated talk show, Dr. Phil McGraw is launching Merit Street Media, a new news and entertainment cable TV network. It will be anchored by Dr. Phil Primetime, which will premiere Feb. 26, 2024 and will air nightly at 8 Pm Et.
No details have been revealed yet about the new network’s distribution. It is expected to have nationwide carriage, which would be no small feat in the current challenging business environment of declining linear ratings and cord-cutting.
Merit Street will be based in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where a new state-of-the-art broadcast center, spanning over 5 acres, is completing construction. Dozens of longtime Dr. Phil staffers have relocated their families to Texas to continue working alongside McGraw.

CBS Media Ventures President Steve LoCascio is retiring after 34 years at the company and its previous iterations as the division will become part of the portfolio of Wendy McMahon, named this morning as President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
The consolidation is not surprising. LoCascio’s departure comes amid a seismic changes in the syndication business marked by a major contraction in first-run syndication, primarily in the talk shoe arena. CBS Media Ventures and CBS TV Distribution’s top shows, Judge Judy, Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray, all ended their long runs in the last few years. Judge Judy has charted a new path, with its reruns remaining a ratings leader.

News of a fresh horror comedy from Christopher Landon, director of the joyously silly “Happy Death Day” and its sequel, should be greeted with cautious optimism at the very least. He’s been working in the space for some time now, having also co-written and directed “Freaky,” “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” and the more straightforward “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” and understands how to thread that particular needle better than most. His latest feels like both a natural next step and also something of a departure: a family-friendly haunted-house story releasing on Netflix. Unlike his previous efforts, however, “We Have a Ghost” fails to capture what makes this particular genre hybrid so much fun.

Dr. Phil, the syndicated talk series hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw, is coming to a close following a successful run in the daytime space.
After launching in September 2002, the program that was co-created by the 72-year-old host and Oprah Winfrey will air new episodes until the current season ends this spring, with McGraw eyeing other ventures.
The star’s departure from daytime marks the third major exit from the top syndicated ranks in as many years. A 10-year-old playing a 33-year-old who’s pretending to be a nine-year-old is a tricky tightrope to walk for anybody, but then-preteen Isabelle Fuhrman achieved it with preternatural creepiness as the “little girl” Esther in 2009’s “Orphan.”
The Warner Bros. horror offering was an end-of-decade, word-of-mouth sleeper in spite of, and because of, its risible-on-paper plot — a nine-year-old Russian girl terrorizing her adoptive family is actually a 33-year-old Estonian woman with a rare hormonal disorder that stunts her physical growth. But what made the movie so sickly convincing and effective was how straight Jaume Collet-Serra’s direction and David Leslie Johnson’s screenplay played the ridiculous story. Still, it wouldn’t have worked without Fuhrman, now 25, and returning to the role 13 years later with Paramount’s sequel origin story, “Orphan: First Kill” (August 19), from “The Boy” director William Brent Bell.

You may not know the name Phil Tippett, but you most certainly know his work. The VFX legend has been integral in the creation of some of modern cinema's greatest creature effects, from the animation for the At-at walkers and the tauntauns in "The Empire Strikes Back," to the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park," to the robots in "RoboCop," and even the bugs in "Starship Troopers."
But while he was working on mesmerizing audiences with his work in "Robocop 2," Tippett was also working on an independent project that would become his magnum opus: "Mad God." This stop-motion descent into hell has been in the works for 30 years, dropped several times,...

Updated: It appears unlikely that at least one of two CBS Media Ventures-distributed syndicated daytime talk shows, The Doctors and Daily MailTV, will continue beyond this season. We hear CBS employees were told today that both shows hailing from Jay McGraw’s Stage 29 Prods., are facing a possible end. There is conflicting information but we also hear there have been no official cancellations.
According to sources, Daily MailTV executives are still making their final decision whether the show will proceed with a sixth season.
The Doctors, created by McGraw, launched its first season in 2008. It was hosted by ER physician Dr. Travis Stork along with co-hosts plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon, dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra, psychologist Dr. Judy Ho and Ob/Gyn Dr. Nita Landry.

Kate Winslet (virtually) presented the Life Achievement Award to Helen Mirren at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, but that’s not the only thing linking them. Winslet also won her second award for limited series/TV movie actress for “Mare of Easttown,” putting her in a tiny group of two-time winners that includes Mirren herself.
Winslet is now the fourth woman to win the category twice after after Mirren Alfre Woodard and Queen Latifah (“Life Support,” “Bessie”). Her first victory came 10 years ago for another HBO series, “Mildred Pierce.” No one has won more. The win also puts Winslet into an even more exclusive club with Latifah: They both now have a perfect 2-for-2 record in the category. (Woodard has had three nominations while Mirren owns a category-leading five.)

Last September, the limited series “Mare of Easttown” entered the 73rd Primetime Emmys ceremony with seven major nominations, including one for star Kate Winslet and three for supporting players Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson, and Jean Smart. In the end, Nicholson triumphed over Smart and joined Winslet and Peters in the winners’ circle. Now, the Screen Actors Guild has given Smart another chance at victory by nominating her for the guild’s Best TV Movie/Mini Actress award. Nicholson is out of the picture in this case, but, since SAG does not separate lead and supporting TV performances, Smart now faces the challenge of defeating Winslet.
Aside from Winslet, Smart’s competitors in this category are Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). Coolidge is a total SAG newcomer, while Erivo and Qualley each have one 2020 film bid under their belts for “Harriet” (individual) and...

Dr. Phil is coming under fire after current and former employees called out the daytime talk show’s toxic workplace environment in a report from BuzzFeed News. Now, the host’s lawyer Patrick Morris is speaking out against the claims, stating the accusations are nothing more than a “clickbait story.” “It is a clickbait story, because as everyone knows, Dr. Phil sells tickets. BuzzFeed was offered dozens of current and former staff members to talk to but when BuzzFeed started hearing the truth, which ruined their salacious narrative, they declined,” Morris tells Variety. “Dr. Phil focuses on content for the program and doesn’t get involved in staff relations, but the staff at the program in no way uses ethnic origin such as described.” The employees allege that they experienced verbal abuse on set, calling the workplace one that “fosters fear, intimidation, and racism.” Some even stated that vulnerable guests...

Another daytime TV star is facing claims of fostering a toxic workplace environment.
A dozen current and former Dr. Phil staffers tell BuzzFeed News that they faced verbal abuse from senior producers, experienced racism behind the scenes and witnessed guests being manipulated and treated unethically, describing the environment as “chaotic,” “hostile” and “overbearing.” One staffer called Dr. Phil “the show about mental health where everybody who works on it has terrible mental health because our work conditions were really bad.”

Patrick Morris, Phil McGraw’s personal attorney, is speaking out against accusations of a toxic workplace environment against the long-running daytime talk show “Dr. Phil.” A dozen current and former employees of the long-running series spoke to BuzzFeed News about the verbal abuse, fear, intimidation and racism they faced behind the scenes of the production.

The “Dr. Phil” talk show has again been accused of fostering a “toxic” workplace environment, this time in a lengthy article published Thursday by BuzzFeed News. A dozen current or former employees accused top producers of abusive behavior toward staff, fostering racist stereotypes both onscreen and off, and unethical treatment of guests — including a charge that one employee was instructed to tell a guest not to take prescription medication before going on air “because they wanted her to look unstable and quote-unquote, ‘crazy.'”
Phil McGraw denied the accusations through his attorney, H. Patrick Morris. Executive producer Carla Pennington, who was also accused of unprofessional behavior along with other senior-level producers, also denied the accusations through an attorney, Bryan J. Freedman.

This probably should be obvious by now, but it’s good to be Kate Winslet. The recent winner of the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress Emmy for her performance in HBO’s gripping crime drama “Mare of Easttown” is also now the favorite to take home the corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award come February. If she succeeds, she’ll be 2 for 2 in the category and become just the fourth woman to snag the award twice after Alfre Woodard, Helen Mirren and Queen Latifah.
Winslet previously won for her work in the eponymous role of HBO’s “Mildred Pierce,” which like “Mare of Easttown,” also features the acting talents of Guy Pearce. In the latter series, which was created and written by Brad Ingelsby, Winslet portrays Mare Sheehan, a competent but tired detective attempting to keep her life together while investigating the murder of one teen girl and the disappearance...

Big Brother returned once again to top primetime ratings on Wednesday. The CBS reality series came back slightly down from its previous episode earning a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo and 3.63 million viewers, per fast affliates. Last night’s episode was down one tenth in demo rating and approximately 6% from the previous episode on Sunday, but still made it as Wednesday’s highest-rated program.
Competing in the same time slot was America’s Got Talent on NBC. While the latest episode was no match for Big Brother ratings-wise, America’s Got Talent was the most-watched show on Wednesday.

A great gift for many film fans earlier this week was a wide-ranging profile of reclusive former actress Shelley Duvall in The Hollywood Reporter, which is the first we’ve heard publicly from her since her disturbing 2016 “Dr. Phil” interview. In the segment, the show painted Duvall as someone visibly battling distressing mental illness and paranoid fantasies. In many ways, the THR piece offers redemption for Duvall, who lives in Texas with her partner Dan Gilroy, and prefers to stay outside the limelight.
“I only knew that it didn’t feel right for McGraw’s insensitive sideshow to be the final word on her legacy,” Seth Abramovitch, who wrote the piece, said in the article.
In the story, Duvall touches on her experience with the “Dr. Phil” team. “I found out the kind of person he is the hard way,” Duvall said. “My mother didn’t like him, either. A lot of people,...

Your Moulin Rouge-adoring mind was not playing tricks on you: That was indeed Undoing star and exec producer Nicole Kidman singing a cover of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” in the HBO limited series’ opening title sequence (watch here).
The song choice is, of course, drenched in irony given the David E. Kelley-penned thriller’s dark premise and, you know, foreboding title. But for the first half of Sunday’s premiere, Kidman’s moneyed Manhattanite Grace Fraser was living something of a fantasy life, even if director Susanne Bier’s haunting vision of New York in winter foreshadowed the nightmare to come.

Going into Restaurant Wars tonight on “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.,” the two contestants to beat for the season 17 title are still Melissa King and Gregory Gourdet. But what about Kevin Gillespie, who has kept up with them challenge for challenge? Actually, he has outdone them challenge for challenge. In the first seven episodes of the Bravo competition series, he has won six times, more than any other chef.
King, Gourdet and Gillespie are so far the only chefs to win elimination challenges — they’ve each won three, with King and Gillespie sharing the honor in “Get Your Phil” and then Gourdet and Gillespie winning jointly in “Pitch Perfect.” But if you also count the quickfire challenges, Gillespie laps the field: he has won three of those preliminary challenges, more than anyone else. In fact, there has only been one episode out of seven where he hasn’t won one challenge or the other.

Some TV doctors seem to be ignoring the real-world Hippocratic oath.
In recent weeks, a trio of popular dispensers of lifestyle advice – Drew Pinsky, Mehmet Oz and Phil McGraw – have appeared on media outlets or via digital video downplaying the threat of the coronavirus pandemic, with remarks that undermine their credibility and urge people to take steps that could cause harm. Pinsky in sundry February and March appearances suggested to followers that the coronavirus would be “way less virulent than the flu.” Oz told viewers of Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” in a guest segment earlier this week that having children go back to school might be “appetizing” despite the fact it could potentially help spread the contagion.
Backlash to the appearances was so severe that Pinsky apologized, noting his comments were “incorrect.” Oz this week admitted that he “misspoke.”
