‘We’re all about what’s next,’ says MGM president of television group and digital Mark Burnett.
The studio announced on Thursday it has brought on Sam Toles to served in the new position of senior vice-president of digital and new platforms.
The highly regarded executive will be based in Los Angeles and takes charge of MGM’s digital native and short form content development and distribution.
He will work on new and existing MGM properties alongside the scripted, unscripted and distribution teams.
Toles most recently served as senior vice-president and general manager of Vimeo’s Entertainment Group, where he directed all aspects of programing for the video sharing platform that reached more than 250m unique viewers each month.
He oversaw the first slate of original programming including HBO’s High Maintenance, the Emmy-nominated Garfunkel And Oats: Trying To Be Special, and the Oscar-nominated animated short Pear Cider And Cigarettes.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

The 89th Annual Academy Awards kicked off Sunday at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and as expected, the A-Listers came dressed to impress.
La La Land star Emma Stone wowed in a classy, custom-created Givenchy gown, while Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson opted for a blue velvet Alberta Ferretti dress, which featured a thigh-high slit. The men looked just as handsome, with Stone's co-star, Ryan Gosling, sporting a Gucci suit, and Fifty Shades Darker star Jamie Dornan in a cream-colored tuxedo jacket.
And while the red carpet looks were undoubtedly fabulous, all eyes were on the night's big winners. See the full list of everyone who took home a shiny statuette and check back throughout the night for updates!

Everyone thought it was a joke but it became a historic Oscars gaffe! Presenter Warren Beatty, alongside Faye Dunaway, misread the night's winner and announced "La La Land" as the victorious one, but it was really Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight's" award! Whew! An Oscar first!
Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" ended up receiving six awards from its 14 nominations including best director and actress for Emma Stone.
I'm sure we'll hear more about this Oscar gaffe, but for now here are the winners of the 89th Academy Awards

La La Land, Emma Stone, Hacksaw Ridge and Suicide Squad are all Oscar winners. Here's the full list...
For the 89th time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - that'd be AMPAS, to its mates - has handed out its world-famous collection of gongs.
The full list of winners from this year's awards? Right here. Jason Statham, you'll notice, was callously snubbed again. What's more, his shark-fighting movie, Meg, won't be out in time for the 90th Oscars either. Sigh. Those that did win? Well, Suicide Squad is now an Oscar-winning movie, picking up as many gongs as Arrival. Hacksaw Ridge also snagged a couple of gongs, whilst Moonlight triumphed. And - after a confusing moment when Warren Beatty read out the wrong winner (not his fault, we might add) - it ultimately upset La La Land and took Best Picture too.
Here's what won.

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

And so the awards season hullabaloo came to a close for 2017 with the 89th Annual Academy Awards took place this Sunday, February 26th, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Hosted by talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel, it was Hollywood’s biggest night of the year and this year’s line-up of films is one of the strongest in recent times.

We’ve finally come to the big moment where I lay down my best predictions as to who will be taking home Oscars in all 24 categories. This year is a little different from last, in that it’s pretty much been a one-track award season for a certain little musical (as opposed to last year, where things were a little uncertain heading into the big night), but, as always, there’s plenty of room for surprises to happen, so let’s dive right in.
Best Live Action Short
Ennemis Intérieurs
La Femme et le Tgv
Silent Nights

Best Documentary Short
Extremis
4.1 Miles
Joe’s Violin
Watani: My Homeland
The White Helmets
Best Animated Short
Blind Vaysha
Borrowed Time
Pear Cider and Cigarettes
Pearl
Piper
As usual, there’s nothing to really base a good prediction on for the short categories, aside from the buzz surrounding the nominees. This year,...

Now that the ballots are en route to the 89th Academy Awards, it is time for us to predict who will be the big winners! Damien Chazelle.s .La La Land. dominated the nominations with 14 nods but will it shine on Oscar night at the city of stars? I.m predicting that the romance musical will take home 11 awards including Best Picture! The musical will only lose in the actor (sorry Ryan Gosling), original screenplay, and to its own .Audition. in the original song categories.
And you know why .La La Land. will win big? Because when the country is in turmoil, popular culture swings to the opposite way. And the film, with its sweet rose-colored palette and fancy production numbers made us all happy. And Hollywood wants us all happy.
We.ll find out all the happy Oscar winners on Sunday at 5 p.m. Join me on my Facebook page,...

In the week leading up to the 89th Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a series of public programs celebrating this year’s nominees in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Animated and Live Action Short Film categories. All events will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Wamg attended the annual AMPAS reception featuring the 2016 Oscar nominated films in the Animated and Live-Action Short Film categories. The program featured screenings of all the nominated films in these categories, plus an onstage discussion with the filmmakers.
The evening was hosted by director Tim Miller (Deadpool), who himself was nominated in the Animated Short category in 2005 (Gopher Broke). In his opening comments, a clearly emotional Miller spoke about shorts being, for most filmmakers, a labor of love rather than a means to getting awards and accolades.

MaryAnn’s quick take… My pick: “Pearl” [pictured], blending new Vr tech with old-fashioned characters and emotions, demonstrating storytelling possibilities that are beginning to open up. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The lessons and legacies parents pass on to their children. The dangers of not living in the present… or living too much in the present. These are the motifs woven through the five short animated films nominated for the Oscar this year.
“Pearl” is a lovely sketch of the creative bond between a father and daughter.
My favorite, and the one I’d like to see win, is “Pearl” [IMDb], from Disney animator Patrick Osborne (Big Hero 6), who won in this category two years ago with his delightful “Feast.” A lovely sketch of a relationship between a father and daughter from their rough early...

Chicago – One of the more overlooked set of nominees at Academy Awards time is two categories for Best Short Film – Live Action and Animated. The 2017 nominees are packaged as two presentations that are currently screening in Chicago at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Historically, the short film – both in live action and animated forms – were part of the early tradition of movie exhibition. In the days before television, movie theaters would show the newsreel, the short film and of course “cartoons” before a main feature, and that tradition only petered out when audience tastes shifted around the 1950s, and television took over the exhibition of cartoons. The live action short languished in near anonymity, banished to film festivals and rarely shown to the general public. The age of the internet has revived the form substantially (in both categories), and their availability have garnered enough interest to exhibit the presumed...

Most people probably don’t pay any attention to the three shorts categories at the Oscars — we’re talking about best animated short, best documentary short, and best live-action short. While these categories are meant to honor shorter films than those in their related categories that honor feature-length films, let’s see if runtime still plays a part in determining the winners.
With the 2017 Academy Awards right around the corner, we’re trying to see which films stand the best chance at winning in these three categories. The nominees and their corresponding runtimes are as follows: Blind Vaysha (eight minutes), Borrowed Time (seven minutes), Pear Cider and Cigarettes (35 minutes), Pearl (six minutes), and Piper (six minutes) competing for best animated short; Extremis (24 minutes), 4.1 Miles (21 minutes), Joe’s Violin (24 minutes), Watani: My Homeland (40 minutes), and The White Helmets (40 minutes...

The Oscar for best animated short film may not generate nearly as much attention as other categories, but it strikes an exciting contrast with the more traditional forms of storytelling found throughout other categories.
These films usually celebrate animators from around the world — including a number of up-and-comers — who apply a range of visual techniques and sophisticated concepts only possible in the animated medium. This year is entirely North American, but still features a lot of different approaches — and yet, ironically, the frontrunner in the category is a very familiar name: Pixar.

“Zootopia,” Disney’s zeitgeist-grabbing, Oscar frontrunner, took best animated feature honors Saturday at Asifa-Hollywood’s 44th Annie Awards, at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The Studio Ghibli co-production, “The Red Turtle,” meanwhile, won best indie feature.
Overall, “Zootopia” grabbed six Annies, which also included directing (Byron Howard & Rich Moore), writing (Jared Bush & Phil Johnston), storyboarding, character design, and voice acting (Jason Bateman).
Laika’s stop-motion “Kubo and the Two Strings” earned three awards (character animation, production design, and editorial), along with Guillermo del Toro’s “Trollhunters,” the DreamWorks/Netflix series (character design, character animation, and storyboarding), and the “Pearl” Vr short from Google Spotlight. Within TV/Broadcasting, the Oscar contender took direction (Oscar winner Patrick Osborne), production design, and music.
Disney’s “Moana” was the other big feature winner, collecting two Annies for animated effects and voice acting (Auli’i Cravalho, who tied with Bateman).

Those of you who haven’t been taking virtual reality seriously should start doing so right now. For the first time ever, the Oscars have nominated a Vr film, which means the filmmaking style is officially taking hold and is undoubtedly here to stay — at least for the time being. Pearl has snagged a nomination in the best animated short category and stands a chance at winning big. Let’s take a look at what this moment means for the future of Vr and how it stands against the competition.
Pearl — a 2016 film by Google Spotlight Story and Evil Eye Pictures — tells the story of a girl and her dad chasing their dreams as they cross the United States in an old hatchback, their makeshift home, named Pearl. Music, created by both the father and daughter, is at the center...

For animator/illustrator Robert Valley, the imperfections of life and art magnificently come together in his Oscar-nominated short, “Pear Cider and Cigarettes,” about his friendship with a self-destructive daredevil, who died despite reaching out to the filmmaker for help to get a liver transplant in China.
Valley first wrote about his childhood friend, Techno, in two self-published graphic novels. He was a gifted athlete but, even at a young age, drawn to danger like a moth to the flame. It’s a dark, tragic, passionate account of the American Dream gone bad and the idealism of loyalty and hero worship.

It’s been 16 years since Pixar won the Oscar for best animated short (Ralph Eggleston’s “For the Birds”). Wouldn’t it be fitting if Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” ended the drought? That would give Pixar four Oscars (alongside Geri’s Game” and “Tin Toy”).
However, “Piper” faces stiff competition, particularly from Theodore Ushev’s much darker “Blind Vaysha” from the National Film Board of Canada, which has earned a dozen Oscars.
The other three contenders range from Robert Valley’s bleak “Pear Cider and Cigarettes” (Vimeo’s first Oscar nom), the melancholy Western, “Borrowed Time” (made independently by Pixar’s Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj), and the introspective “Pearl” from Oscar winner Patrick Osborne (Disney’s “Feast”), the first Vr nominee from Google Spotlight Stories.
“Piper”
The rite of passage for the adorable sand piper continues a long Pixar tradition of incubating innovative tech in its shorts program.

Chicago – The film musical “La La Land” received 14 nominations (including Best Picture), tying a record, as all nominees were announced for the 89th Academy Awards on January 24th, 2017. “La La Land” is steamrolling into the Oscars, and tied “All About Eve” (1950) and “Titanic” (1997) for most nominations in Oscar history with 14, including Best Picture, Actor, Actress and Director. Other multiple nominations went to the searing drama “Moonlight” (eight) and the stage adaptation “Fences” (four). Also notable is that six African American actors will compete for Oscars, one year after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

The Academy Award nominations were announced early this morning, and you can read Joey's thoughts about them over at that link. I wanted to offer a few other quick observations before I get to my predicitions: Mel Gibson seems to have gotten a pass from the Academy for his extra-curricular behavior because his film Hacksaw Ridge secured six nominations (including a Best Director nod), Moonlight thankfully got some well-deserved recognition with eight nominations, and Hidden Figures earned three nominations, including one for Best Picture. I was happy to see Arrival, my favorite film of 2016, with eight nominations, but disappointed that Meryl Streep got a Best Actress nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins over Amy Adams' incredible work in Arrival.
Below, you'll find the full list of nominees with my prediction for the winner in bold text. These are not necessarily the movies that I personally want to win, but the...

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

It's time to start your guesses, as this morning brings about the nominations for this year's Academy Awards. As always, there are some surprises and more than a few head-scratching snubs. Come inside to check out the full list of nominations!
It's that time of year again, where we all debate what the best movies of the past year were. One thing we can agree with, however, is not understanding why the Academy nominates certain things they way they do. This year brings about a refreshing turn-around in the wake of "Oscars so White", but that doesn't stop it from presenting some seriously big snubs this time around.
Below you can find the full list of this year's nominations and begin your guessing now, before the big show happens on February 26th. If you're not happy with the choices this year, be sure to check out Our Cinelinx Movie Awards...

The glitz, the glamour, the gift baskets that do as much to sway voters as a slaved-over work of art — it’s the 89th Academy Awards! AMPAS unveiled their take on the year that was 2016, which adds up, expectedly, to many of the names and endeavors we’ve seen fêted over the last few months. (We’ve done our part, too, and think you’ll be much better-served following us than them.)
Due to a conscious choice to avoid awards chatter around these here parts, we’re not going to change things up more or less at the last minute. We instead will just get to the list (via Washington Post), which is topped by La La Land with 14 nominations, and so:

This year a record 69 animated short films vied for an Oscar nomination, with ten making the shortlist, and five final nominations.
For six years, Disney or Pixar has been nominated in the category every year, and won twice (“Paperman” and “Feast”). This year Pixar’s “Piper,” from Alan Barillaro (“Wall·E,” “Brave,” “Finding Nemo”), could mark a Pixar win for the first time since Ralph Eggleston’s “For the Birds” 15 years ago. That would give Pixar four Oscars (alongside Geri’s Game” and “Tin Toy”).
