“You just hope for something like this in your life to just come onto your doorstep,” reveals Louie Anderson about his Emmy-winning role as Christine Baskets on the FX comedy series “Baskets.” Anderson’s role as the much put-upon mother of grown sons (both played by Zach Galifianakis) has earned the comedian two consecutive Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, with Anderson winning the award in 2016. In our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above), Anderson describes how the actor’s own family influenced his performance as well as his excitement over the show’s recently-announced fourth season.

In recent years, true crime and real-life events have seen a resurgence on scripted television. And while it's often said that truth is stranger than fiction, turning fact into compelling drama comes with its own challenges.
"Reality is messy," says Rene Balcer, veteran producer of Law & Order, who this year spun the franchise that often rips cases straight from the headlines off into the NBC limited series True Crime: The Menendez Murders. "While a true-life story can offer the writer an abundance of ready-made riches, if you get into narrative trouble you can't just have Vin ...

By the end of the series the walls were closing in on Philip and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell), two Kgb spies who have been working undercover in the United States for decades as mild-mannered travel agents. Their neighbor and friend, FBI agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), finally deduced that they were the Russian “illegals” he had been investigating for years, leading to a confrontation between Stan and the Jennings clan as they prepared to escape to Russia with their daughter Paige (Holly Taylor).

This spring FX’s “American Crime Story” returned for its second season, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” which explores the murder of the famous fashion designer (played by Edgar Ramirez) by serial killer Andrew Cunanan (played by Darren Criss). It’s the early front-runner to win Best Limited Series based on the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have entered their picks in our predictions center thus far. The first season of “Acs,” “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” also won top honors in 2016, so a victory for “Versace” would make this the first series since “Prime Suspect” to repeat as Best Limited Series.

With only a few episodes left, this series is coming down the home stretch rather slowly.
American Crime Story: Versace Season 1 Episode 7 takes us even further back in time to the days before Andrew met David and even Norman. This is Andrew completely devoid of excess and merely working a 9-5 to make ends meet.
Oh and the Versace's are back. It's been awhile since they fully shared an hour with the Andrew Cunanan story.
Overall, while this series has been strong, there's been world class installments and much weaker ones. This one, unfortunately, fell in the weaker category for me.
For starters, let's talk about the Versace's. During the premiere, I was so excited to see what they were going to show us about this family. The casting was out of this world and there's so much meat to their story.

I'm starting to think they should have called this series 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace by the Coward Andrew Cunanan.'
Just like the big screen movie about Jesse James and his killer Robert Ford, this isn't a true story about the man who was assassinated and his life. This is about Andrew Cunanan.
And American Crime Story: Versace Season 1 Episode 5 continues to give us a look into the mind and actions of a killer.
We start by stepping further back in time yet again to meet the man Andrew bludgeoned to death at the beginning of American Crime Story: Versace Season 1 Episode 4. The man is Jeff Trail, and he's a former naval officer, now working at a gas company in Minneapolis.
It was fairly obvious based on the brief conversation between Jeff and David a few moments before Jeff's murder that neither man was particularly fond of Andrew at this point.

Another week peeling back the layers of a killer.
American Crime Story: Versace Season 1 Episode 4 introduces us to someone who knew Andrew intimately. A friend, a person who knew thought they knew who Andrew Cunanan was.
But as the event leading up to Versace’s death play out, it’s very clear that no one knew just how twisted Andrew Cunanan really was.
While overall this series has been top notch in terms of casting and the overall look has been outstanding, isn’t hasn’t been without criticism. The pacing and general confusion being chief among them.
In the past two installments alone, we’ve been introduced to characters we know absolutely nothing about and we’re immediately expected to feel for them and their current situations. Having both episodes begin with a murder or the insinuation of one, does make the audience sympathetic but it doesn’t make it less confusing.

Soon after he began playing Christine Baskets on FX’s comedy “Baskets,” comedian Louie Anderson felt an overwhelming need to reach out to his mother. In playing Christine, Anderson was actually channeling his mom, Ora Zella Anderson, who died in 1990, and the role was offering him a chance to come to terms with that relationship.
“I took my phone out and wrote her a letter and got a whole bunch of stuff out,” he said. “My manager read it and people in my life and said, ‘this is beautiful, this could be a book.’ I needed to say some stuff to my mom and didn’t know it. Because once I started playing Christine, I realized I had not been the son I should have. I didn’t appreciate her like I should have.”

Since this series began with the murder of Gianni Versace, it was safe to assume that subsequent episodes would dive deeper into the events leading up to Andrew’s decision to murder the designer.
As much as this is a show about Gianni and the Versace name, it’s also a deeper look into the murderous conman, Andrew Cunanan.
American Crime Story: Versace Season 1 Episode 2 doesn’t necessarily point us toward a motive or give us much insight into why Andrew committed any of the other murders before he landed in Miami, but it further shades in the serial killer and his obsession with Versace.
We start off with the revelation that years before his death, Gianni Versace was very sick. HIV is very much implied but never explicitly stated. And Gianni was very much struggling with what he perceives as his imminent death.

When “Rick and Morty” writer Jessica Gao wrote the episode “Pickle Rick” last season, she created a character named Dr. Wong, with an eye toward casting an Asian American actress in the part. But then Susan Sarandon suddenly became available, and the Oscar-winning actress was tapped for the role instead.
Adding insult to injury: The character’s last name stayed the same, which meant a white actress ultimately played family therapist Dr. Wong.
“The whole point of writing a character like Dr. Wong was because I wanted there to be an Asian character on ‘Rick and Morty,'” Gao said. “And I also specifically wanted to give a job to an Asian actress.”

Gianni Versace was murdered nearly 20 years ago in the summer of 1997 under the blazing Miami sun.
His murder and the subsequent hunt for his killer was one of the biggest news stories of its time. And now it’s getting the Ryan Murphy treatment.
The brain trust behind the riveting The People v. Oj Simpson: American Crime Story, have turned season 2 into American Crime Story: The Assassination of Versace Season 1 Episode 1.
And while the premiere wastes no time in showcasing the aforementioned murder, it looks like the subsequent fallout will be the main focus of the series.
Much as the Oj case concentrated on the trial, it appears that what happens after Versace’s murder, will be just as important as everything that comes before it.

Whether Darren Criss was shooting people in the face, puking in public bathrooms or casually rubbing his crotch while standing over a sleeping couple, he sure made Wednesday’s season premiere of American Crime Story feel like the darkest episode of Glee yet.
