- The death of a scientist at the site of a live volcano proves a difficult case to crack for Humphrey and his team.
- The police are called to the island's volcano observatory when head vulcanologist Stephen Langham is found dead, presumably of a heart attack though Goodman suspects foul play. The victim's brother, drug addict Daniel, his lover Victoria, who plagiarized his work and the mysterious Megan Colley, another colleague, are all in the frame though commissioner Patterson believes that shifty mayor Richards also had a row with the victim over a planning dispute. In fact there is more than one killer and, having named them, Humphrey can concentrate on entertaining visiting girl-friend Martha.—don @ minifie-1
- Professor Stephen Langham, head of the island volcanological observatory, is found dead from 'arrested breathing', apparently another cardiac crisis, on the volcano's slope, but Goodman can't believe he would have ventured there by dusk without a lamp, otherwise even doubly-equipped. All scientific collaborators have motives: wayward brother and heir Daniel Langham as junkie in debt, deputy and lover Victoria Baker persuaded him in bed to give her credit for his own research, Irish junior Megan Colley is even an impostor, Emer Byrne. The commissioner insists to add as suspect the mayor Joseph Richards, with dodgy complex offshore finances but overseas at the time, but his latest hotel development depended on a report by Stephen. Humphrey must check and combine all and brush up on chemistry tests to come up with the false constant to base the true variation of appearance on while coming up with a criminal cause of death forensics didn't find.—KGF Vissers
