This show is not like anything I've ever seen on TV. It's more like a special novel, full of images, subtext, symbolism, that provokes genuine emotion. In this episode, you feel the culmination of Ted Jr's conflict. He knows the marriage is over, his efforts to resuscitating it has left him with futility and but he knows Tawny is a lover of lost causes, is too gentle to hurt him and if he doesn't put the marriage down it will drag out endlessly. There are no throw away lines of dialogue. Sentences like, "have you grown anything new in the garden lately" or "that picture of us was so crass" means he has moved on. Janet's trip with Ted senior is mesmerizing. These are two people who are reflecting on lives lost thru circumstance and thru settling. They could have gone so many directions with their lives and both resent that they didn't. He looks at his silence as heroic. She resents his silence as a failed opportunity to alert her that she's wasting time. Maybe she could have lived a more fulfilling life and maybe if he wasn't so polite the man she does love could have too. He never even wanted to work in a tire store. He just went along. Ted jr doesn't know the codes to his home anymore. Tawny changed them. He collects some possessions, all destructive, alcohol a gun. And leaves her home more peaceful. His final act is to stare at his marital bed, the locus of so many years of intimacy that is now gone. I could go on and on. The scenes with Danial are just as brilliant, moving and well acted. It's about lives ruined thru lack of action and thru action impelled onto them.
