The name "Frye" (meaning "free" from Old English) was used as the surname of the main character because he is wrongfully sentenced to prison, and hence deprived of his freedom.
The trial scene from "Shawshank Redemption" was used as inspiration for the screenplay and for this reason there are multiple lines in "Youth Sins" which are similar or identical to those in "Shawshank Redemption".
