Tom Cruise may have just found his next non-"Mission: Impossible" movie, and his decision seems to mark a turning point some of us have been waiting years to see.
According to a report from Deadline, Cruise has agreed to star in a new movie from "Birdman" and "The Revenant" director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which has Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment in negotiations to distribute and produce. Iñárritu wrote the script with Sabina Berman, as well as the writing team of Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, who co-wrote 2014's "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," but plot details are being kept under lock and key at the moment. The only thing confirmed at this time is that it will be an original story. (Apologies to anyone hoping to see what an Iñárritu-directed "Edge of Tomorrow 2" might look like.)

Those rumours have turned into reports, as the first details emerge regarding what Top Gun 3 could look like.
—–
Back in December there were rumours floating around that Paramount was looking to build on the success of 2022’s hugely successful Top Gun: Maverick with a sequel that would see `Tom Cruise climbing back into the cockpit of a jet fighter for a trilogy-closing movie’.
It’s a month later and those rumours have solidified into reports, suggesting that another Top Gun movie may well be the next project for Cruise once he finishes production on the eighth Mission: Impossible film.
The timing of this report is probably no accident either: Cruise has just inked a deal with Warner Bros in which star and studio have agreed a non-exclusive partnership to develop blockbuster projects and original films. After nearly a decade, it seems "Edge of Tomorrow 2" finally has a real shot at coming to fruition. Don't get too excited just yet, but Warner Bros., the studio behind the 2014 sci-fi blockbuster, recently locked down a deal with Tom Cruise, who starred in the film. The actor is now set to develop, produce, and star in projects for the studio. And wouldn't you know it, the sequel in question is on WB's wishlist.
The Hollywood Reporter recently broke down the blockbuster deal between Warner Bros. and Cruise. The outlet's article states that the studio's heads of film Michael DeLuca and Pam Abdy are eager to see Cruise return to the role of William Cage, noting, "DeLuca and Abdy have also hoped to lure Cruise back for a follow-up to the 2014 film 'Edge of Tomorrow.'" What if there was no tomorrow? That's an existential question posed not only by the 2014 time loop film "Edge of Tomorrow," but also by its sequel's complicated status following the original's successful release. Ever since 2015, director Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have spoken at various times about a sequel movie getting off the ground. At one point, Liman had said that the sequel would be entitled "Live Die Repeat and Repeat" (referencing the movie's ersatz title/subtitle) and that the film's co-writer Christopher McQuarrie would also return. He even claimed that the concept was so good that "it's gonna revolutionize how people make sequels."
Alas, a myriad of obstacles have gotten in the way in the intervening years between that statement and now, with Blunt saying in August 2023 that she's still interested in making a sequel, but doesn't know when or how it could happen. Given the project's stalled status,...

Emily Blunt is one of the most versatile and talented actors in Hollywood, who has starred in a variety of genres, from musicals to thrillers. A Quiet Place is a horror series that follows a family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where deadly creatures hunt by sound. The first film, released in 2018, was directed by Blunt’s husband John Krasinski, who also co-starred as her character’s husband. The second film, released in 2021, introduced Cillian Murphy as a new ally for the family. Both films were critically acclaimed and commercially successful, and a third film has been rumored for a while.

All those who thought the Tom Cruise/Elon Musk space movie was just fake news, movements have ramped up a gear with director Doug Liman jumping on board to direct.
Although it’s very early days, the film is expected to be an action-adventure. No studio is yet attached to the movie but that surely won’t be a problem depending on whether any insurance company are insane enough to cover it.
Liman has previously worked with Cruise on ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and ‘American Made’. The pair had also been attached to Liman’s passion project ‘Lunar Park’. In the now-approaching six years since sci-fi romp Edge of Tomorrow hit cinemas, we’ve had all manner of sequel rumours and gossip floating around – none of it culminating in a slated release date. Production on Edge of Tomorrow 2 has, so far, been on ice. But the noises are getting more positive.
Emily Blunt, one of the movie’s principal stars, has been talking to IndieWire about (among other things) the status of a second Tomorrow. And while she couldn’t confirm anything, the actress spoke about director Doug Liman’s enthusiasm for the as-yet unmade project, saying:

It’s the sequel idea that just won’t die. Doug Liman’s ambitious, brain-bending sci-fi actioner “Edge of Tomorrow” might have started its theatrical run with iffy domestic returns, but the Tom Cruise- and Emily Blunt-starring alien invasion thriller has only increased in status since its original summer 2014 release. With that affection came the inevitable: plenty of demand for a sequel, the rare case that finds both a film’s fanbase and its creative team equally as eager to ante up for a fresh adventure.
Rumors have persisted for years that a followup was in the offing, but with stars Cruise and Blunt busy with other franchises (including “Mission: Impossible” and “A Quiet Place”) and a seemingly tough-to-crack story, “Edge of Tomorrow 2” has remained in a tenuous position. But is that changing?

A couple years back, Warner Bros. released the surprisingly strong Tom Cruise flick, Edge of Tomorrow. Unfortunately, the film had been plagued with a dull name and subpar marketing, and as such, most audience members didn’t go out to see the film in theaters. It wasn’t until after the word of mouth started to make its way among fans that they started to make their way out. While it did give the film a longer tail at the theaters, it didn’t help much in making the studio money.

Director Doug Liman has two films arriving in UK cinemas in the space of a month. Now playing is The Wall, his impressive, smaller movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. And then he’s reteamed with Tom Cruise for American Made that we’ll see in August.

Director Doug Liman's never been one to back away from a fresh challenge. Whether it was making the leap from low-budget indie movies like Swingers and Go to expensive spy thriller, The Bourne Identity, or the knotty problems of making a time-paradox movie like Edge Of Tomorrow, Liman reliably goes for left-field project choices.

Can we have an old-fashioned focus back on a single movie, rather than trying to hint at six others in the same film?
It was pretty well known that, by the time Warner Bros was getting ready to release Green Lantern in cinemas back in 2011, it’d got to work on a sequel already. It hadn’t actively announced it, but it was common knowledge that a script was being developed which– should the film be a hit – would speed the time it would to take to get a follow up in cinemas. Given that movie studios have gradually been trying to draw back the gap between sequels from three years down to two, this – in Warner Bros’ defence – seemed pragmatic. It wouldn’t, in the scheme of things, cost them a lot of money, and provided they kept things quiet, egg heading towards face could be avoided.

No cinematic universe here. Doug Liman says Edge Of Tomorrow 2 will round off the series...
Well, this feels unusual. In an era of cinematic universes and sequels that only stop when the box office takings dry up, we’ve got a filmmaker who reckons that their film needs one sequel, and that’s it. That filmmaker is director Doug Liman, and that sequel will be Edge Of Tomorrow 2.
“I see this as a two-movie franchise”, he declared, noting that it’ll round off the story set up in the first film, and that it’ll pick up immediately following the ending of the first Edge Of Tomorrow. No spoilers to that ending here, save to say there's a very natural pick-up.
The sequel will feature Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt returning, but Liman – chatting to MTV – also revealed that he’s going against convention for his follow-up.

Back in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow hit theaters. It was a film that didn’t have the greatest marketing campaign, and couple that with the fact that Tom Cruise’s most recent film, Oblivion, had disappointed. With that in mind, many moviegoers weren’t really lining up to see Cruise’s latest sci-fi outing. As a result, the film almost failed. It took in an abysmal $28 million in its opening weekend.
However, thanks to great word of mouth, the film managed to do just okay in theaters. Not great, but okay. It wasn’t until its home release that it seemed like audiences had caught on. Yes, Edge of Tomorrow was a genuinely good movie. And not just good. Exceptional. Now, here we are, three years later, and a sequel to the movie actually seems to be in the cards. But of course, the fear lingers. Just what would this film entail?...

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are now both set to return for Edge Of Tomorrow 2....
Far be it from us to tell highly-paid marketing people at Warner Bros how to go about selling their movies, but we still can’t help but wonder if all of the lessons of 2014’s excellent Edge Of Tomorrow have yet to be digested. The movie earned terrific reviews, and justifiably so, yet was hurt by a marketing campaign that didn’t quite know how to sell the film.

The way in which movie studios have begun to book untitled movies release dates years in advance is perhaps the best reflection of the level of competition that currently exists between the giant ‘tentpole’ movies that are crammed into each calendar year. They do also provide grist for the rumour mill, which in turn aids promotion – because if people are speculating about which film will fit in each announced release date, then anticipation for those films will inevitably increase. We have seen such speculation spike today, with the announcement of two Warner Bros release dates – leading some to suggest that The Batman is finally fixed in place.
It was a tweet from Exhibitor Relations that broke the news.

From the mind of Matt Nix comes The Gifted, a brand new X-Men show that will follow a mum and dad (Angel's Amy Acker and True Blood's Stephen Moyer respectively) who discover that their kids may just have a few surprising superpowers. After they're forced to flee, the family must fight to stay alive, even if that means finding other mutants to give them a helping hand.

Director Doug Liman has been teasing his upcoming sequel to Edge Of Tomorrow...
Just a quick tease on Edge Of Tomorrow 2, from its director, Doug Liman. In a new interview with IGN, he confirmed that he's moving ahead on the project. "It’s going to revolutionise how people make sequels. It really will", he said. When pushed to expand on what he meant by that? "I can't, but it will. You mark my words", he teased. Given that Liman has just finished putting together a Vr movie, we wonder if that might be related to what he's up to.

There Is A God!
2014's Edge Of Tomorrow was a criminally under-seen film. Critics adored it. Fans loved it. But the $178 million production barely managed to limp past the $100 Million mark domestically. It just didn't catch on with the mainstream and, for the folks who thought it was a great sci-fi flick with ample amounts of humor and innovative action, we figured we wouldn't hear about the film again except for when we pulled it out of our blu-ray collections to introduce it to people who missed out on it.
There've been quiet rumblings of a follow-up, but that seemed like pie in the sky. How could that happen? Well, thanks to star Tom Cruise's enduring appeal worldwide, the film made a whopping $270 million in international markets, bringing Edge Of Tomorrow's cume to $370 million. Between that, and the film's great reviews/ratings, the idea of a sequel became legitimate.
