Forget all about Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall and co. That lot are yesterday’s chip paper. The stars of the 2011 One Day film have been superseded by this new bunch, now bringing David Nicholls’ hit 2009 romance novel to life for a new 14-episodes Netflix series. Adapted by Wild Rose and Three Girls screenwriter Nicole Taylor, One Day is a bittersweet love story set across two decades. It’s the story of Emma and Dexter, whose first night together at their university graduation sparks almost two decades of will-they-won’t-they romance.

“The Gilded Age,” Julian Fellowes’ critically lauded follow-up to “Downton Abbey,” has returned for a second season on HBO. Although “The Gilded Age” slightly alters the formula that made “Downton Abbey” so popular, swapping out turn-of-the-century England for a rapidly developing America in the late 1800s, it takes place just a few decades before its predecessor. Does that just reflect Fellowes’ fascination with a particular period? Or should we take it as a sign from a master of the genre that this is the ideal setting for a period piece TV show?
Inspired by “The Gilded Age” Season 2, we took a look at Ranker’s list of the 101 Best Period Piece TV Shows (24K votes) to see if readers’ favorite period dramas and comedies happen to center around one period in particular. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a Bridgerton spinoff series that shows us how life was in the Ton during the early days of Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. We get to see how they meet and fall in love, how her reign leads to social change in the Ton, and how she became the strong and influential Queen that we see in Bridgerton’s first two seasons. But just because this series introduces us to younger versions of familiar characters doesn’t mean that it’s stuck in the past. Queen Charlotte also features an arc set in the “present day” Regency era of the original series that focuses on Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship.
Between both eras, Queen Charlotte has a massive cast full of new and familiar faces. If you want to be as up to date on the hot gossip of the ton as Lady Whistledown,...

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.
And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.
Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Before Perez says his final goodbye to the evidence board though, there’s a missing person case to solve, and a host of new characters to interrogate. Here’s who he’ll be meeting…

All hail Elizabeth-the-teen, pre-queen. Just in time for the Jubilee of her namesake Elizabeth II, England’s longest reigning monarch, Starz and creator Anya Reiss (“EastEnders”) gaze back to another, lesser-known micro-slice of Tudor history in “Becoming Elizabeth.” The series asks: what was happening to the wicked smart, red-haired “virgin” queen-to-be in the tumultuous months following the death of her father, Henry VIII, in 1547 — and over a decade after Pops beheaded her unpopular mother Anne Boleyn?
The word orphan doesn’t quite describe the politically fraught and emotionally unstable situation in which the vulnerable 14-year-old (Alicia von Rittberg) finds herself. Of Henry’s three legitimate children, the third in line for the royal scepter enters a game of thrones in earnest with her Anglican younger half-brother Edward (Oliver Zetterstrom) and Catholic older half-sister “Bloody” Mary (Romola Garai).

It still might be a little while before we’re able to go back to the movies again. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for February 2021, Amazon Prime is bringing the theater home. The movies are the real appeal this month.
Amazon’s offerings are highlighted by two original films of note. The first is Bliss, which premieres on Feb. 5. This will star Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek as a couple experiencing some intimacy issues. Presumably this is all just a tune up for when Wilson dons a mustache in Disney+’s Loki later in May. The other film is the sci-fi rom-com The Map of Tiny Perfect Things on Feb. 12.
Other library movies include Antz, Moulin Rouge, The Prestige, The Village, and Dazed and Confused, all of which arrive on Feb. 1. Sonic the Hedgehog is set to arrive later on Feb. 18.
Amazon is premiering only one new original series this month.

While Starz execs aren't tied to the ratings like regular commercial channels, they have to air programs that will keep viewers subscribed. Which of their shows will be cancelled or renewed? We'll have to wait and see.
Scripted Starz shows listed: American Gods, Ash Vs Evil Dead, Black Sails, Blunt Talk, Counterpart, Da Vinci's Demons, Dublin Murders, The Girlfriend Experience, The Missing, Now Apocalypse, Outlander, Power, The Rook, The Spanish Princess, Survivor's Remorse, Sweetbitter, Vida, and The White Princess.
Last update: Most recent ratings added for Outlander.
There's lots of data that execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series. The ratings for initial airings don't play as large a role as they do on commercial stations but they are still an indication of how popular a show is. Here's an updated listing of the recent/current...

Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch has outlined the local originals strategy for Starzplay, revealing that a slate of shows are being planned out of the Middle East and India as the business looks to complement its U.S. and English-language pipeline of content.
Speaking at the Berlinale Series Market and Conference on Wednesday, the executive told Variety that the Lionsgate-owned streamer, which is beginning to roll out as a standalone app globally, is “dipping our toe in local production.”
“We have local production in India right now, as well as (Middle East service) Starzplay Arabia,” he said, adding that three to four originals will launch for Starz Arabia, while Spanish originals are also on the way.
Hirsch, who was appointed CEO in September following the departure of Chris Albrecht, chalked up Starzplay’s success to a robust content proposition, which includes Starz originals alongside Lionsgate’s vast catalogue, in addition...

It looks like the cat's out of the bag: we finally learn the truth about Rey's parents in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (again). No, they weren't mere junk traders who sold her off for drinking money, as Kylo Ren said in The Last Jedi. Nope. In a retcon move from J.J. Abrams, Rey's parents chose to be nobodies, coming from a rather elite family in a galaxy far, far away. So, of course, their brief screen time should only be occupied by top-notch talent. Here's the scoop on Rey's heritage, plus a look at the actors who play her parents: two non-nobodies named Jodie Comer and Billy Howle.
So here's the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth: Rey is actually - drum roll please - a Palpatine. It's a contentious choice for sure, especially after Rian Johnson showed that anyone anywhere could wield the Force.

Asking “Star Wars” fans to name the best lightsaber fight in the franchise’s history would yield a handful of results (expect to see Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon from “The Phantom Menace” picked numerous times), but it appears there was at least one franchise-defining fight that never made it to theaters. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Star Wars” stunt coordinator Nick Gillard reveals the best lightsaber fight of George Lucas’s prequel trilogy was cut out of “Revenge of the Sith” by the filmmaker himself.
The removed lightsaber fight took place in “Revenge of the Sith” when Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) is escaping from General Grievous and has to encounter a handful of the villain’s bodyguards. Each body guard is carrying a double-sided weapon with deadly electrical tips. Lucas’s original script had Obi-Wan fighting off the guards with his lightsaber. The scene was revised for the...

Surprise! Jodie Comer took home the top prize for a TV actress tonight. Her win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her turn in “Killing Eve” as cunning assassin Villanelle is not only her first Primetime Emmy win ever, but the actress’ first nomination as well. The BBC America series, which was up for nine Emmy Awards this year, was renewed for a third season this past April.
Jodie Comer bested her co-lead Sandra Oh, who was also up for Outstanding Lead Actress for “Killing Eve.” Comer also topped a superb lineup of nominated talent: Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”), Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), and Viola Davis (“How to Get Away With Murder”).
