Mr-9: Do or Die is based on the first of a long-running series of mostly ghost-written novels chronicling the adventures of Masud Rana, Bangladesh’s answer to James Bond. Somewhat surprisingly given there are 500 or so novels in the franchise, this is only the second attempt at bringing them to the screen, the first being Masud Rana in 1974. Fifty years later, will the world be more receptive to the Bangladeshi Bond?
The film certainly starts on a familiar note with Rana running unnoticed across wide open lawns in broad daylight without being noticed. Despite his best efforts and his leaving a trail of bodies behind him, his target gets away and the two agents he was supposed to rescued are killed.

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), Mireille Enos (Hanna), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) are the latest additions to Michelle Danner’s courtroom drama, Miranda’s Victim. They join an ensemble led by Abigail Breslin, which also includes Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland, as previously announced.
The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. Her case notably results in the establishment of the Miranda rights afforded to criminal suspects taken in police custody, to ensure the admissibility of statements made during interrogation, as part of subsequent criminal proceedings.

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

Melvin Van Peebles, the influential filmmaker behind “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song,” and father of director and actor Mario Van Peebles, has died. He was 89.
“Dad knew that Black images matter,” Mario Van Peebles said in a statement from the Criterion Collection. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, what was a movie worth? We want to be the success we see, thus we need to see ourselves being free. True liberation did not mean imitating the colonizer’s mentality. It meant appreciating the power, beauty and interconnectivity of all people.”
“Sweet Sweetback” will be screened at the New York Film Festival this week for a 50th anniversary tribute. “In an unparalleled career distinguished by relentless innovation, boundless curiosity and spiritual empathy, Melvin Van Peebles made an indelible mark on the international cultural landscape through his films, novels, plays and music,” the Criterion Collection said.

Former Kew Media Distribution sales boss Jonathan Ford has launched new distribution company Abacus Media Rights (Amr) in partnership with Amcomri Media Group.
Amcomri, whose other entertainment investments include 101 Films, 101 International and Hollywood Classics, has provided Abacus Media Rights with a funding line to support rights acquisitions.
Ford left Kmd, the profitable British sales arm of collapsed Canadian TV group Kew Media, in February after 13 years with the company. Kmd was later placed into administration and its staff made redundant.
Amr will initially focus on distributing documentary features and series, non-scripted and drama series.
The fledgling business has already acquired the rights to a slate of shows to represent on the international market, including CBC drama series “Trickster” and “Leaving Neverland” director and producer Dan Reed’s new HBO and BBC antibiotics doc “Superbug,” as well as Reed’s upcoming “Liberty City” for Channel 4.

Oscar viewers were understandably irked on Sunday when several beloved stars — including Luke Perry, who appears in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, one of this year’s Best Picture nominees — were omitted from the show’s annual In Memoriam segment.
Perry, whose other film credits included roles in Redemption Road, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Fifth Element, died in Feb. 2019 after suffering a massive stroke. The Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale star was 52.

When you look at the filmography of actor Guy Pearce, you see classics like “L.A. Confidential” and “Memento” beside box office and critical duds like “Factory Girl” and “Seeking Justice.” Active since before 1990, Pearce has worked with great directors, impressive co-actors, and played a plethora of roles. Continually, he veers back in the direction of films surrounding law enforcement and the spheres that circle this section of the world.

"There ain't nothing else to steal here." Momentum Pics has unveiled the official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Disturbing the Peace, from director York Alec Shackleton. The film stars Guy Pearce in another leading role as a small town marshal named Jim Dillon, who hasn't carried a gun since he left the Texas Rangers after a tragic shooting. But he must pick up his weapon again to go to battle with a gang of outlaw bikers that have invaded the town to pull off a brazen and violent bank heist. The full cast includes Devon Sawa, Kelly Greyson, Michael Sirow, Barbie Blank, Jacob Grodnik, Michael Bellisario, Dwayne Cameron, Elle E. Wallace, and Jay Willick. Last week, I got to interview Devon Sawa about his role in the film Escape Plan: The Extractors. We delved into the role and his experiences, his upcoming films, and I got to gush a bit about my childhood crush on him. It was a great time. Check out the interview below:
Jessica Fisher: Hi, I’m Jessica Fisher from GeekTyrant, and I just have to say that twelve year old me is beside herself right now. I’m a big fan from way back., especially Now and Then.
Devon Sawa: Thank you so much. And you know what? That’s exactly how twelve year old me felt filming this movie with Sylvester Stallone. Not that I’m anything like Stallone. What I’m trying to say is thank you.
Jf: Of course! Do you still get a lot of women approach you who were young fans of yours.
