The complex relationships between parents and their children is well-trodden ground for Supergirl. Over the past two-plus seasons, we’ve seen Kara struggle to connect with both her biological and adoptive mothers, Alex go to great lengths to try to rescue her father, Jeremiah, and Lena do everything in her power to prevent herself from transforming into her mother, Lillian. However, this week’s episode, “Far From the Tree,” is different than those storylines in a couple of ways, the most notable one being that the hour centers on two Supergirl supporting characters: Maggie and J’onn. Maggie and J’onn’s respective conflicts could not be

It's been a nagging possibility since Supergirl season 3 began, but in "Far From the Tree" the pieces started to fall into place to make it a reality. Alex and Maggie's days as a couple might be numbered. It's been known since Supergirl season 2 ended that Floriana Lima would be exiting the series. It's been a mystery to how exactly the show would handle her character's relationship with Alex, whether Maggie and her new fiancee would break up or Maggie would simply exist but off-screen.
In "Far From the Tree" the answer seemed to be given: that Maggie and Alex would break up and it would be over the issue of having children. It's a heartbreaking truth to face, if does turn out to be true, but it's also the perfect way to break "Sanvers" up.

Supergirl takes a backseat in this emotional J'onn- and Sanvers-centric episode. Spoilers ahead in our review...

3.3 Far From The Tree
This episode is all about fathers and closure, although not everyone gets the ending they wanted.
It's rare for Supergirl to take a back seat on her own show, but in this case it was worth it. While she was certainly part of J'onn's adventure on Mars, she played a supporting role that allowed J'onn's relationship with his father and the Martian resistance to take centre stage. Meanwhile, back on earth, the absence of Kara, Winn, James, Lena, and new characters Sam and Ruby allowed the emotional Maggie-centric story the room to breathe that it deserved. Like other Flarrowverse/Berlanti shows,...

Supergirl might not always use them, but the show has a surprisingly deep bench of great supporting characters. While Kara will (rightfully) always be at the forefront of any given story, that has sometimes come at the expense of other characters getting their time in the spotlight.
In this episode, titled "Far from the Tree," Supergirl explores two of their best (and most underappreciated) characters with J'onn and Maggie. The two stories surrounding each characters don't mesh quite so well together (though there's some connective tissue), but "Far from the Tree" still manages to be one of Supergirl's most emotional hours ... that also helps bring Kara back to a more enjoyable emotional status quo.

Even though it takes place in a dimension separate from where most characters in the Arrowverse live, Supergirl has done quite the fine job of expanding its supporting cast and embracing DC’s rich pantheon of heroes. One example of this would have to be that of J’onn J’onzz/the Martian Manhunter, who actually happens to be my favorite character on the show.
To date, he’s played a critical role, being both the director of the D.E.O. and a mentor to Kara Zor-El. And thankfully, the creative minds behind the series have yet to hold back when it comes to exploring his Martian origins. In fact, we’ve seen the tragic loss of his family, unwelcome visits from White Martians, and he’s also found a love interest of sorts in M’gann M’orzz.

On the last Supergirl, M'gann reached out to J'onn for help on Mars. On "Far From the Tree," he answers her call and takes Supergirl with him. Meanwhile, Alex and Maggie celebrate their engagement with their families. Despite Mon El's absence, Kara is there to support her sister and even smiles.
The official episode description from the CW says, "Eliza (guest star Helen Slater) throws Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) a wedding shower, which causes Maggie to reach out to her estranged father (guest star Carlos Bernard). Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) joins J'onn (David Harewood) on a personal mission."...

Supergirl season 3 continues next week with episode 3, titled “Far From The Tree,” which will be a must-watch installment for fans of Martian Manhunter. Not only does it see the return of M’gann M’orzz Aka Miss Martian (Sharon Leal), but J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) will also meet his long lost father, M’yrnn J’onzz (Carl Lumbly).
Longtime DC TV fans will know that Lumbly is perfect casting as J’onzz’s dad, given that the actor previously voiced Martian Manhunter himself in the beloved Justice League animated series and its follow-up Justice League Unlimited. He’s still the definitive version of the Last Son of Mars for many fans of a certain age, so it’s great that he’s returning to the DC family in Supergirl. On top of Smallville‘s Erica Durance also coming aboard as Kara’s mother Alura, this season of the...

Episode 3.03 Trailer is out! Called 'Far From the Tree', the episode will be taking Supergirl Up, Up, Up.... Up, Up and Away. From Earth. The trailer shows that she is joining the Martian Manhunter on a journey to Mars. Check it out right here.
The episode is slated to air in October with the following description:
Eliza (guest star Helen Slater) throws Alex and Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) a wedding shower, which causes Maggie to reach out to her estranged father (guest star Carlos Bernard). Supergirl joins J’onn on a personal mission.
The Martian Manhunter has been a favorite on both Smallville and Supergirl, but I am sure this is the first time we have a Mars-centred episode on either shows. Be sure to check out the new episode next week. You won't want to miss this.
