While Terrence Malick happily toils away on year five of editing his Biblical epic The Way of the Wind, he’s found a number of artistic diversions in recent years. The latest is an epic-looking interactive exhibit that finds him reuniting with his Knight of Cups, Song of Song, and Voyage of Time collaborator Cate Blanchett, while also boasting contributions from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

Terrence Malick first arrived on the scene as part of the New Hollywood movement in the 1970s with his directorial debut "Badlands" and its 1978 follow-up "Days of Heaven," and both are now listed in the National Film Registry for their historic significance. After making "Days of Heaven," however, Malick disappeared from show business for two full decades. It was only in 1998 that he finally returned to the big screen with his Oscar-nominated World War II movie, "The Thin Red Line."
That two-decade absence may have been partially rooted in Malick's experience on "Days of Heaven," which was a particularly daunting film for him and Billy Weber to edit. In an oral history of "Badlands" for GQ, Weber recalled that they spent two years editing "Days of Heaven" — an inordinately long time for a film to be in post-production. Paul Lee, a philosophy instructor at Harvard College and MIT, also recalled...

With its March 17 theatrical release fast approaching from Broad Green Pictures, Terrence Malick’s third feature in three years — after Knight of Cups and Voyage of Time — Song to Song has finally graced us with a trailer.
The Austin-set drama is but a part of what’s been an active few years for Malick. In addition to shooting three narrative features, the filmmaker produced twin documentaries (Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience and Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey), approved a Criterion restoration of his 2005 film The New World (with The Tree of Life rumored to arrive this summer), and even appeared in person for a rare on-stage conversation. (And, best of all, yet another new feature may be premiering by year’s end.)
Malick’s latest boasts a major ensemble cast, led by Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman, who round out a typically star-studded list...

If you missed Terrence Malick’s Voyage Of Time: The IMAX Experience, or if you saw it and just thought the Brad Pitt voiceover was really annoying, you’re in luck. According to Variety, Malick is releasing an “Ultra Widescreen” version which will screen with a 3.6:1 aspect ratio. It will play on 21 screens—none of which housed the film when it was first released back in October—starting this Friday.
The new edition gets rid of Pitt’s narration, so you can just settle in for a journey across space and time without his hunky sounds in your ears. In a statement, Pitt invited audiences: “Now, witness first-hand Malick’s vision as he hoped it to be seen, with the newest 3.6 version—a purely experiential film presented in the widest aspect ratio possible.” This is the third iteration of Voyage Of Time out there ...

We might need to make a chart to track the various versions of “Voyage Of Time” that Terrence Malick is releasing. Already hitting theaters this fall has been “Voyage Of Time: The IMAX Experience,” which brings the director’s exploration of the universe to theaters equipped as such, complete with Brad Pitt’s soothing narration. Next year, a longer cut for standard cinemas will arrive, with Cate Blanchett guiding viewers through space and time.

More or less a work in progress for almost four decades, Terrence Malick‘s much-delayed “Voyage Of Time” has been a near-odyssey to reach the screen. Even years before his masterwork “The Tree Of Life,” Malick had tried to develop a film about the origins of earth for Paramount in the 1970s entitled “Q.” He eventually abandoned the project, but some of the footage, shot nearly 40 years ago, is employed in the feature-length “Voyage Of Time: Life’s Journey.
