Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has completed a number of shorts as of late. Out of his new Vancouver based studio, Blomkamp has delivered: "The Escape," "Rakka," "Firebase," and now "Zygote." "Zygote" stars Jose Pablo Cantillo and Dakota Fanning. Characters are trying to survive on a remote base, with a deadly creature. The short film is visually stunning. And, everyone with a set of eyeballs should view it. The entire short, from Oats Studios, is hosted here. The story involves an Arctic mine. Two survivors fight for their lives, while evading a "new kind of terror!" Horror fans can see that terror, in the short below. It is made of several victims. Their eyeballs and arms have been amalgamated, in order to absorb even more survivors. Showing the continuing development of Computer Generated Imagery, the monster looks unusually life-like. Viewers should turn down the lights, while turning up the volume, to fully enjoy "Zygote.

Neill Blomkamp’s “Alien” sequel may not be happening now that Ridley Scott has taken back the reins on his franchise, but the “District 9” director is busy all the same. His next project is more ambitious than just another movie, as he’s forming Oats Studio as a sort of testing ground for short films that will be released for free online — and, if all goes well, perhaps even expanded into features.

There are several reasons I don’t envy the writing team behind The Big Bang Theory, and one of them is because they’re the people who have to concoct brand new situations for their situational comedy every week, filling more than twenty-two half-hours every season. Now, you might sensibly argue that this is their job and they’re being paid handsomely for it, but I also find myself racking my brains for what I’d do with each of these characters and coming up with very little.

Paolo Sorrentino has been making buzz with his HBO series “The Young Pope,” a provocative yet satisfyingly rich drama like no other. Now, the filmmaker returns behind the camera in the noir short film “Killer in Red.”
Starting Clive Owen, the project is an extended ad for the alcoholic liqueur Campari, written by Sorrentino and based on an original story by J. Walter Thompson.
“Killer in Red” begins with a bartender making a cocktail when Owen, who is always late and “looks like a lot of people,” walks into the empty bar looking for a woman. While he waits for her, the man pours him a drink and tells him a story about his old bartender teacher, Floyd (Owen), who used to craft cocktails explicitly for people.

In the days since Donald Trump’s election victory, civilians and artists alike have tried to grapple with the situation in many different ways. Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has channelled his frustration into art by posting two seconds-long short films that mock Trump’s grandiosity and narcissism. The first film features Trump’s motorcade decked out in gold on its way to Washington D.C. The second film features a souped-up Air Force One complete with guns attached to its front. Watch both films below courtesy of Blomkamp’s Instagram.

As fun as Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln ads are, they don’t actually make the cars look as cool as he wants you to think they do. (But come on, they’re Lincolns. Steve McQueen couldn’t make those look cool.) As a remedy of sorts to boring and stuffy car commercials, BMW has now created The Escape, a sequel to/revival of its early-2000s anthology ad series The Hire. The originals starred Clive Owen as a badass wheelman in a series of BMW-sponsored shorts directed by hotshot filmmakers, and this new installment puts Owen back in the driver’s seat and District 9’s Neill Blomkamp behind the camera. We reported on The Escape being in the works last month, and now BMW has released the full, 10-minute action short online.

Time to drive. The newest full-length BMW Film has been released online. Titled The Escape, this one is directed by filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (of District 9, Elysium, Chappie), and stars Clive Owen as "The Driver" along with Jon Bernthal and Dakota Fanning. This marks the return of the acclaimed action series launched by BMW in 2001, a short film series featuring BMW cars made by talented directors. The Escape features the All-New 2017 BMW 5 Series - as well as some kick ass action. In the behind-the-scenes they talk about how it was important for "realism, above all else." I like the way they work in extra mystery with the characters this time, especially with Fanning's background. Hopefully this series will continue with more films from more filmmakers, because I really don't want this to be the end. For now, fire it up & enjoy. Here's two "behind-the-scenes" videos on the making of The Escape,...

You’ll forgive “The Escape” if it plays up some of the more eye-popping attributes of BMW’s line of luxury vehicles — like that they can single-handedly bring down a helicopter, given the appropriate method of connection, sure, okay — if only because the automaker has again footed the bill for superb slice of action-centric short filmmaking.

Director Neill Blomkamp has teamed back up with Clive Owen for a new BMW short film called The Escape. This time around, they even brought Dakota Fanning, Jon Bernthal, and Vera Farmiga along for the wild ride!
The short film is a continuation of a short film series that Blomkamp and Owen made together back in 2001-2002 for BMW. Each of the films featured Owen, who was a rising star at the time, as the mysterious Driver who was hired to complete various missions. Each of these shorts were directed by some great talent at the time.
I remember being blown away by that film when I first saw the films in this series, and I thought it was so cool that BMW brought Blomkamp and Owen back for another chapter in the story. As you'll see, it turned out thrillingly awesome! It features one hell of an action-packed car chase!

Unless you have the money, buying a BMW is out of the question, but the luxury carmaker is hoping that should you become flush with cash, you’ll give them a shot. Because if it’s good enough for Clive Owen to save the day, then it’s good enough to get you to the grocery store.

As promised last month, Clive Owen has returned as The Driver in a new BMW short film. After John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Guy Ritchie, Alejandro González Iñárritu, John Woo, Joe Carnahan, and Tony Scott helped direct “The Hire” series around the turn of the century, Neill Blomkamp has now taken the helm for The Escape.
Also starring Dakota Fanning, Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga, the short finds Owen’s character attempting to get a last living clone to safety (although, despite a similar premise, this one doesn’t quite have the vibes of Children of Men) when Bernthal’s mercenary character tries to make things more difficult.
For those hoping the films may continue it is said to be a “relaunch” of the series, but only this one has been made and no other additional details have been given yet. Perhaps if this one is a hit, we...

One of the most intriguing directorial debuts on the horizon is Kirsten Dunst’s first foray behind the camera, in which she’ll take on Sylvia Plath’s landmark novel “The Bell Jar.” News broke in late July of Dunst’s adaptation, which casts Dakota Fanning in the lead role of Esther Greenwood, a wayward young woman whose descends into mental illness, but further developments have been pretty quiet until now. While it might be a little strange that one of the most exciting cinematic events of this month is a short film that’s premiering online and doubles as an advertisement for a luxury car brand, such are the times we live in. And frankly, we’ll take a fully thought-through film concept over Matthew McConaughey getting behind the wheel and mumbling a lot of nonsense. In other words, “The Escape” looks great.

I have fond memories of BMW's The Hire online short film series from 2001. That was long before I started writing about movies, but I was fortunate enough to have a stepmother who wrote for a local New York publication, so we'd get press materials in the mail at the house. A DVD with all eight short films from BMW arrived one day, and I decided to check it out. What I found was really damn cool. Great production value, an awesome cast, and a magnetic leading man in Clive Owen. This was before Owen became a household name, and I recall thinking, "This guy needs to be the next James Bond!"
The action-packed mini-movies were directed by people like John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee, Wong Kar Wai, Guy Ritchie, Alejandro González Iñárritu, John Woo, Joe Carnahan and Tony Scott, and featured actors like Gary Oldman, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, F. Murray Abraham and James Brown.

“The Hire,” a series of eight short films helmed by the likes of Wong Kar-wai, Ang Lee, Guy Ritchie, Alejandro González Iñárritu, John Woo and Tony Scott, first premiered in 2001. One might reasonably argue that the project had much to do with the English actor’s subsequent success on this side of the pond; his roles in “The Bourne Identity,” “Closer” and “Sin City” all came about within a few years of it.
