Primetikme Emmy nominee Julia Pott's 8-minute short film "Summer Camp Island" was released back in 2016 and apparently this little animated movie was enough of a success to be picked up for a recurring season recently. Oh well, judging from this one here, I cannot really share the praise. took me a little while to get somewhat used to the animation and that is a crucial deal breaker here for such a short film of course. Voice acting I was not too impressed either I must say and to that I did not really get used to. A bit of a pity because I felt the writing and story of a male character who likes his female best friend more than he should and the guy she is crushing on was elaborated on in a fairly entertaining manner, especially in terms of dialogue writing. However, the negative aspects here are more frequent than the positive overall and even if the film gets better in the second half, it wasn't good enough for me to recommend the watch overall. Especially disappointind as I usually quite like a good piece of animation. I just hope the series turned out better, not in terms of writing, but in terms of the other negative criticisms I had to make. Maybe they wanted this one to be especially aimed at young audiences, but yeah I read criticisms that they should have picked older voice actors and I somewhat tend to agree. A pity really as the film gives a good display of how innocent humor can still be pretty funny and entertaining at times. So if you love the series, watch this one too perhaps. I have not seen it (yet?), so I cannot comment on parallels and differences, but to be honest this one here did not get me too curious about it either. All in all a thumbs-down.
