Prelude to show reflects style more than substance.

Cinematography is nice. Camera closeup angles annoying. Pace of story is slow and lacks cohesion even for a 30 minutes plotline. However it does capture the essence of the show and its style of understated science-based scifi drama, a rarity in this Disney / Marvel hyper entertainment cullture of nonsense and instant gratification.

Loner who reached for the sky

This story is a girl who was different, felt out of place and looked at the sky and got a bit curious. As we know from watching the series, Hana's dreams came into a reality as she eventually got to go to space as an astronaut. The cinematography of this film is great. The casting was great, I like the performances of Hana and Joon Seung by Nekhebet and Uatchet Juch and even the waitress at the diner was greatly cast. I actually would have loved to see a 2nd Part of "Before Mars" even though this one sets the backstory of Hana's youth nicely. It's a bit nostalgic and pretty cool / smart National Geographic did this. I think a lot of series should have a digital event feature after a shows success... ie: "Better Call Saul" perhaps would have made a good event feature during Season 2 of "Breaking Bad."

Did not really impress me or get me curious

Warning: Spoilers
"Before Mars" is a 33-minute live action short film from Osctober 2016 that was supposed to serve as an appetizer for the upcoming mini-series "Mars" (about colonizing the Red Planet) by Oscar winners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. It is a very Asian-American production and this refers to the people in front of as well as behind the camera. I personally did not really see the appeal though. It did not get me curious about "Mars" and it was pretty underwhelming. Early on, I found the characters rather uninteresting and one-dimensional and the supposedly spectacularly, maybe even touching, final moments made little of an impact to me. Actually, the idea of everybody being pretty much able and allowed to speak to high profile astronauts makes little sense. I doubt they would have responded to the call or even talked to the little girl as they must have been busy with more important stuff. Then again, I may be slightly biased as science fiction has never been my genre, but I still believe the script is not really good and the actors hardly elevate the mediocre material. It may not be a bad achievement, but in the Golden Age of Television that we are living right now, "mediocre" just isn't good enough anymore. Maybe people who already watched and enjoyed "Mars" can check this one out. Everybody else should better skip it though. Thumbs down and I don't recommend the watch.
