Less than one month after releasing in theaters, Universal has announced that their vampire ballerina horror movie Abigail will be headed home to “Premium VOD” this week.
We’ve learned this morning that you’ll be able to buy ($24.99) or rent ($19.99) Abigail at home beginning tomorrow, May 7, 2024, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Abigail is the third vampire movie from the Universal Monsters brand in the past year, the film scaring up $34.7 million at the worldwide box office these past few weeks. That gives it a higher worldwide gross than both The Last Voyage of the Demeter ($21.7 million) and Renfield ($26.4 million), and it’s also the most critically successful of the three vampire movies.

"Evil Dead" fans had to wait a full decade between movies following the release of Fede Álvarez's 2013 entry in the long-running horror franchise. It seems the powers that be have no interest in making anyone wait that long again. To that end, we've learned that Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") has been tapped to write and direct a new movie set within the universe of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic.
According to Deadline, Galluppi developed the idea and brought it to Raimi's team. They sparked to it and now it's officially in the works. No plot details have been revealed but it is described as an original story set within the "Evil Dead" universe. There's also no word yet on casting or anything like that -- meaning, it's unclear if any familiar characters will be included in this new installment. Rami had this to say...

The Universal horror movie “Abigail” began as a modern-day twist on “Dracula’s Daughter,” but making a film about the legendary vampire’s blood-sucking scion wasn’t the reason why the filmmaking trio Radio Silence — producer Chad Villella and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — wanted to make the project their follow-up to 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI.”
“As freeing as it is to challenge the format of what a ‘Scream’ movie is, you’re playing in a pretty specific sandbox,” Gillett says. “Coming out of ‘Scream VI,’ it was just really clear, like, what if we could take any risk that we felt creatively inspired to take and not have to worry about how it fits into the legacy of a predecessor?”
Instead, Radio Silence wanted to return to their roots in original horror, from 2012’s “V/H/S” to 2019’s “Ready or Not.” In “Abigail,” a team of mercenary thieves — played by Melissa Barrera,...

A group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, only to find themselves locked inside with an actual monster vampire in Universal Pictures’ Abigail.
Abigail, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by Stephen Shields (The Hole in the Ground, Zombie Bashers) and Guy Busick (Scream franchise, Ready or Not), transforms a heist movie into a full-blown bloodbath.
That gore was on prominent display last summer when Bloody Disgusting was invited to the set of Abigail, filmed in the birthplace of vampire horror originator Bram Stoker: Ireland. It wasn’t just the sheer volume of fake blood and viscera that was prominently displayed on set, but the glowing praise for the young Irish actor playing the central vampire, Alisha Weir.

Dublin, Ireland. Headquarters of Guinness, Jameson, and the most overpriced beer you can find in the Temple Bar area. Steeped in history, Dublin boasts landmarks like Trinity College and Dublin Castle, emblematic of its medieval heritage. Amidst its historical allure, the city’s streets thrive with the energy of bustling pubs resonating with music and culinary delights. However, beyond its libations and cultural landmarks, Dublin harbors a lesser-known connection to vampire folklore.
Since early childhood, my mother took me to the movies weekly. And horror was always a shared love. It was an obsession I’m sure many of us share. My love for vampire films and stories began as soon as I was introduced to The Lost Boys. But Ireland was special for us. Having ancestral ties to the majestic island, we always dreamed of visiting it and taking in the stunning landscape one day.
So, how do vampires and Ireland come into play?...

Between Ready or Not, Scream, and Scream VI, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have already established a reputation for crafting highly entertaining horror with a flair for gore and bloodletting. Their latest, Abigail, will take the gory horror and violence to a whole new level of delightfully deranged extremes.

Sam Raimi was so impressed by Lee Cronin’s feature directorial debut, the 2019 horror film The Hole in the Ground, that he not only hired Cronin to contribute to his short-lived anthology series 50 States of Fright, he also gave the filmmaker the chance to write and direct the latest entry in the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise. In addition to Raimi’s production company, that movie came to us from Warner Bros. Pictures and their subsidiary New Line Cinema. Obviously the studio executives liked what Cronin did with Evil Dead Rise, because The Hollywood Reporter has now broken the news that Cronin is teaming up with John Keville and Macdara Kelleher of Wild Atlantic Pictures to form a genre-focused production company called Doppelgängers, which has secured a first-look deal with New Line Cinema!

Lee Cronin, the Irish filmmaker behind last year’s hit Evil Dead Rise, has joined forces with frequent collaborators John Keville and Macdara Kelleher of Wild Atlantic Pictures to launch Doppelgängers, a new production outfit focused on genre fare.
The company is starting hot out of the gate, signing a first-look deal with New Line Cinema for its feature film projects. New Line released Evil Dead Rise in 2023, with the movie making a splash at last year’s SXSW and going on to gross $147 million worldwide. Cronin and New Line are currently in development on a horror-thriller titled Thaw.
Under the Doppelgängers banner, the trio will develop genre-focused feature film and television projects for Cronin to write and direct. Cronin will also produce alongside Keville and Kelleher, whose credits range from R-rated comedy Cocaine Bear to acclaimed art house fantasy The Green Knight, which starred Dev Patel.

Horror can always be counted on to transform the most innocuous concepts into unsettling nightmares, especially when it comes to exploring themes of parenthood.
In horror, children frequently veer straight into creepy territory with unsettling statements and empty stares. Creepy kids in horror have been a long-running archetype, turning out iconic characters like Antichrist Damien Thorn in The Omen, The Bad Seed’s Rhoda Penmark, and the possessed Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist.
This week’s streaming picks highlight some of horror’s most unnerving children.

Radio Silence (V/H/S, Southbound, Scream, Scream VI) returns to the big screen with Universal horror movie Abigail in April, and the film’s MPA rating has arrived this week.
Releasing April 19, Abigail has been rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence and gore throughout, pervasive language and brief drug use.”
Watch the official trailer for Abigail below, which is a bloody blast. The Don’t Breathe-esque setup introduces a band of criminals who attempt to kidnap a seemingly innocent young girl. Of course, the little girl turns out to be a vampire – a ballerina vampire, to be specific.
The cast for this one is absolutely stacked with talent, and the killer premise looks to have been executed by Radio Silence in the most fun – and bloody – way possible. It channels the spirit of their pre-Scream horror hit Ready or Not, and it promises to be a gory good time.

Melissa Barrera reunites with her Scream and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for Abigail, a twisted horror film about a vampire ballerina. The two-minute trailer introduces the titular character as well as the batch of adults who are caught completely by surprise when Abigail turns out to be a blood-sucking monster and not an innocent young dancer.
In addition to Barrera, the cast includes Dan Stevens (Gaslit), Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), William Catlett (Black Lightning), Kevin Durand (Resident Evil: Retribution), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), and Alisha Weir (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical) as Abigail. Euphoria‘s Angus Cloud, who passed away in July 2023 from an accidental overdose, also stars.

The death of the Dark Universe was painful for those who saw its potential but a boon for Universal's larger monster horror franchise. Three years after the studio's 2017 "Mummy" crashed and burned at the box office, "Saw" and "Insidious" creator Leigh Whannell delivers a bold new take on "The Invisible Man" that reinvented the classic property while also establishing an exciting director-driven approach for future Universal monster re-imaginings. Whannell will try and repeat that success later this year with his "Wolf Man" reboot, which (naturally) made /FIlm's most anticipated movies of 2024. Before that, though, it turns out we're getting a seemingly brand-new and perhaps even more intriguing Universal monster flick titled "Abigail."

Radio Silence’s new movie with Universal has made its title known, and it’s Abigail. The pic was always set to open on April 19, 2024.
Abigail stars Melissa Barrera, who is reteaming here with filmmakers Radio Silence after Scream VI, as well as late actor Angus Cloud, who died of an accidental, multiple drug overdose back in July.

The “Untitled Monster Thriller” from Radio Silence (V/H/S, Southbound, Scream, Scream VI) and Universal has officially been revealed this week, and it’s titled Abigail.
“Children can be such monsters” is the official tagline for the Radio Silence-directed Abigail, which is scheduled for release in theaters April 19. And the trailer has arrived today.

A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin credits the franchise’s brain trust of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell for the resounding success of his latest film. The Irish filmmaker recognized that the franchise needed to take another left turn, similar to what Raimi did with the more heightened and fantastical third chapter, Army of Darkness (1992). So instead of another cabin-in-the-woods story, Cronin took Rise to a condemned Los Angeles apartment building, as an artistic single-parent family has to now deal with the Book of the Dead’s wrath.
Raimi and Campbell quickly blessed Cronin’s manner of subversion, and what resulted was the highest-grossing Evil Dead film to date, totaling $146 million on a $19 million spend.
“They gave me the freedom to go and perform, because they’ve been through the ringer over the years,” Cronin tells The Hollywood Reporter. “They started out in the most independent way possible, and they...

Haunted fairgrounds are an old staple of the horror genre, as much a part of playground lore as they are of cinema. This early short film by Lee Cronin, director of Evil Dead Rise and The Hole In The Ground, brings a distinctly Irish slant to the tale, as three boys break into an abandoned site and dare one another to take a ride on the ghost train.
We see that boys as children and we see two of them, Michael (Owen McDonnell) and Peter (Steve Wall) as adults, revisiting the place, which is sufficient to tell us early on that something went very wrong back then. Though they’re brothers, they have an uncomfortable relationship. Peter wants them to go for a drink together but Michael wants to get back to his Finnish wife and their kids as soon as possible. He seems as if he’s finally making ready to put.

New Line Cinema & Renaissance Pictures’ Evil Dead Rise will make its streaming debut on Max on June 23.
About the film:
New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” written and directed by Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”) and produced by longtime franchise producer Robert Tapert (“Don’t Breathe”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).

Before making his mark on the Evil Dead franchise with new movie Evil Dead Rise, director Lee Cronin cut his teeth on a mixture of commercials and short films. That early career work eventually led to Cronin’s feature debut The Hole in the Ground in 2019, an A24-released horror movie that soon led to Cronin landing the gig directing Evil Dead Rise.
Cronin directed a handful of short films between 2004 and his feature debut, but it’s 2013’s Ghost Train that garnered the most recognition for the Irish filmmaker. In addition to being in Official Competition in over 50 film festivals worldwide, the horror short notably won a handful of awards, including the Méliès D’Argent for Best European Fantastic Short Film at the Molins de Rei Horror Film Festival in 2014. Ghost Train also won the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival during the same year.

Bruce Campbell has taken to Twitter this afternoon to thank Evil Dead fans for making Evil Dead Rise a smash hit in theaters, the film officially passing $100 million worldwide!
Evil Dead Rise is now officially the highest grossing film in the entire Evil Dead franchise, with Evil Dead 2013’s box office total ending at $97.5 million (unadjusted for inflation).
With a budget of just $19 million, Evil Dead Rise is needless to say a massive success, and it surely won’t be very long before the franchise finds its way back into theaters. We had to wait a full 10 years between Evil Dead and Evil Dead Rise. Expect a shorter wait this time around.
The best aspect of this success story? As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was at one point in time going straight-to-hbo Max. New Line/WB sure dodged a bullet with that one.

You can take a look at the artwork at the bottom of this article.
Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi handpicked Cronin to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie after seeing his feature directorial debut The Hole in the Ground. The story Cronin crafted for Evil Dead Rise has the following synopsis: A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment.

A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.

AC Independent and The Veterans have teamed up on the film adaptation of William Sleator’s cult 1974 science fiction novel “House of Stairs.” The elevated genre movie will star Jacob Tremblay and will be directed by Wi Ding Ho, whose 2018 movie “Cities of Last Things” won a prize at Toronto in the competitive Platform section. “House of Stairs”‘s film adaptation is penned by Matthew McInerney-Lacombe (“Icbm”).
Set in a dystopian America in the near future, the high-concept film follows five 16-year-old orphans who wake up to find themselves in a strange building with no walls, no ceiling, and no floor: nothing but endless flights of stairs leading in every direction, seemingly infinite. To find an exit, the five teenagers must learn to deal with the others’ disparate personalities, the lack of privacy and comfort, their clear helplessness, and a machine that only feeds them under increasingly ominous situations.
