Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.[Tw: Discussions of Suicide]There are countless films and television series about the apocalypse, but few actually reckon with the existential horror of what the end actually means. Even great examples like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Gojira (1954) soften themselves near the end and reassure viewers that we survived. It is difficult to make something that is nihilistic to the point of saying we don’t go on as a species, because the film industry is tied up in capitalism and at the end of the day no one wants to be told that someday they won’t exist. But this is true for all of us. On a personal level, the apocalypse always comes; and we hope that we face the end with loved ones by our side...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.[Trigger Warning: Suicidal Ideation]“The world can change at any moment, based on what you’re feeling” —Rei Ayanami, Episode 26All throughout Neon Genesis Evangelion there have been vague mentions of “the Human Instrumentality Project”. It is Gendo Ikari’s final plan for the evolution of the human race. Giant monsters known as “Angels” have been attacking the post-apocalyptic city of Tokyo-3. They began their assault fifteen years after mankind tried to use the remains of an Angel to create and control an “actualized God”, and in the process brought about the cataclysmic Second Impact. That event nearly saw the extinction of the human race occur after the Polar ice caps melted instantaneously. Since that event happened, the common consensus is that a Third Impact would be inevitable and...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.Shinji Ikari is the hero of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I use the word “hero” loosely, because Shinji doesn’t act like someone you’d depend upon to save the world. He’s one of the child pilots of the robotic Eva-units that have been built to defend the post-apocalyptic city of Tokyo-3 from the monsters known as Angels. In the mecha anime genre the boy saviors of the world are usually confident at the very least, but Shinji doesn’t have these qualities. He isn’t comfortable in his own skin, he has anxiety around others his age, and he has intimacy issues with those who have offered him the breadcrumbs of their affection. His father, Gendo, is the mastermind behind the construction of...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.In the Old Testament of the Bible there’s a circular narrative built around stories of punishment and submission underneath the will of a divine force. If you had faith in God and his will then you could escape these punishments, like Noah or Lot in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. The morals of these stories are usually tied up in notions of there being a specific way that people are supposed to lead their lives. Neon Genesis Evangelion feels a bit like the Old Testament at times, with the beings known as Angels attacking what’s left of the human race. The Angel attacks feel like a divine punishment for trying to become like God through science. In the beginning of the show...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show. The relationships we have with our parents as children tend to dictate our future in significant ways. Children usually look to their parents for foundation and support as they figure out who they are and what they want to be, but sometimes children are not given a base to stand upon. In Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion this is true of every significant character. The child pilots of the giant robotic Eva units struggle with this very thing. Shinji Ikari’s mother died mysteriously and he has never been given direct support or admiration from his father, Gendo, who is overseeing the Evas and military operations at Tokyo-3’s defense outpost. Asuka has a history with her parents that hasn’t been revealed yet,...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show. When Shinji Ikari arrives at Tokyo-3 in the very first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion the city is in lockdown. The latest Angel, one of the giant, seemingly extra-terrestrial creatures mysteriously attacking a post-apocalyptic Earth trying to rebuild itself, has made itself known on their shores and a military attack is about to begin. Nerv operations director Misato Katsuragi was supposed to pick him up, but she’s late. Shinji seems calm, but the city is much too quiet, and far too abandoned for that emotion to be honest. And then he sees a girl standing in the middle of the highway. She’s wearing a seifuku, a typical Japanese schoolgirls outfit, but she isn’t a typical Japanese schoolgirl. She’s still, unresponsive, and...

This diverse mix of composer Michel Legrand’s work for film is by no means comprehensive, Legrand’s phenomenal career spanned over sixty years. He scored over 200 films as well as theatre and musicals, won Oscars, Golden Globes, and Grammys (to name a few), and worked with a myriad of famed popular musicians. He made jazz records with Miles Davis and collaborated with the directors of the French New Wave. Later in life (and by no means slowing down), Legrand focused his time on classical music, creating concertos, sonatas, and ballet. He died this February at the age of 86 just a few months after the release of Orson Welles’s The Other Side of the Wind, whose score he composed. When reminiscing on Legrand’s work I was taken back to two performances that have always resonated with me; I mused on how in both performances it is the score...

Imagine being in excruciating pain or unimaginable danger, calling 911 and then hearing the line go dead.
Every single day there are emergencies all over the country, and some of those emergencies are life or death, and the dispatcher on the other end of the line is literally helping saves lives. To think anyone in that job could be so callous is frightening.
But that's what we saw on 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 5, as Gloria went from hero to zero in record time.
Gloria seemed like a ball of fun in the beginning, but in the end, she wasn't the woman she appeared to be. While her incessant hangups are justifiably worthy of criminal punishment, there was a deeper meaning behind her actions.
The difference between someone like Maddie and someone like Gloria is when hope seems lost, Maddie is still going to be there. In the short time that we've gotten to know her,...

“First Man” director Damien Chazelle has issued a statement (via Deadline) reacting to backlash against his Neil Armstrong space race drama. The movie premiered August 29 on opening night of the Venice Film Festival and, despite strong reviews from critics, sparked a bit of controversy from certain viewers (and especially from Sen. Marco Rubio) for not including Armstrong’s iconic planting of the American flag on the surface of the moon.
According to Chazelle’s statement, the director decided to leave out the moment because he wasn’t making a movie focused on American history but one entirely about Armstrong’s perspective about his mission to the moon. The filmmaker said the decision to omit the American flag being planted on the moon was not a political one and was made entirely to strengthen the story he was telling in “First Man.”

Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man received good marks this week when it landed for its world premiere as the opening-night film at the Venice Film Festival. But not all saw it that way, with a small backlash brewing over the lack of a scene showing Armstrong’s planting of the American flag on the moon’s surface during his legendary 1969 moon landing.
The flag appears several times during the movie, which stars Ryan Gosling as Armstrong, but not having the iconic flag-plant has riled many online who believe the omission may have been deliberate. Sen. Marco Rubio was among those who noted it:
This is total lunacy. And a disservice at a time when our people need reminders of what we can achieve when we work together. The American people paid for that mission,on rockets built by Americans, with American technology & carrying American astronauts. It wasn’t a Un mission.

When asked about the best kiss of her life, for instance, Huppert shot the reporter down and responded, “You dare ask this question of someone you meet for the first time?”
The interview also featured Huppert revealing a rather interesting guilty pleasure: “Imagining myself as a sadistic and manipulative murderer, like something out of a book by Agatha Christie.” No wonder the actress has shown an affinity for tapping into her extreme emotions in films like “Elle” and “The Piano Teacher.” Huppert was similarly blunt when asked about her greatest love.

We've been desperate for Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria to get recognition for her immense talent, and on April 16, our dreams were answered. That's when the 43-year-old actress — who happens to be pregnant, by the way — received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as some of her famous friends watched on. "What a dream come true today!" she wrote on Instagram prior to the ceremony. "Receiving my star on the Walk of Fame is an honor I can't even believe I'm going to experience! Can't wait to join all the legends and even more so, can't wait for all of y'all to go and visit it!" (Photo Credit: Getty Images) In the audience were her friends Ricky Martin, Anna Faris, and Victoria Beckham and her Desperate Housewives co-star Felicity Huffman, accompanied by husband William H. Macy. And other celeb pals sent their congratulations from afar. "I wish I...

Above: 1986 Japanese poster for She’s Gotta Have It (Spike Lee, USA, 1986).In the ten months since I last did a round-up of the most popular posters on Movie Poster of the Day, two things have happened. I’ve slacked off a bit: after running the site since November 2011 and posting one poster every single day for years, in the past year I’ve let my self-appointed task slide a little and have been posting more sporadically. And at the same time it seems that Tumblr is starting to atrophy. At its height my site had over 300,000 followers—it still does officially, but I would guess that a large percentage of those people are no longer still on Tumblr or rarely check their feed. I’m often asked why I don’t up sticks and move to Instagram instead, but while I love Instagram for personal stuff, Tumblr is still...

Benoit Jacquot’s preposterous erotic thriller is rarely erotic and never thrills. It shouldn’t be at first glance: the film has the ingredients of haute cuisine – Isabelle Huppert, playing a high-end sex worker, is rarely boring and Gaspar Ulliel, with his implausibly chiseled looks, could be a sexy, sophisticated foil – but this is more Royale with Cheese than gourmet fare. It’s one of the most lifeless thrillers I’ve seen in recent years, and, since it doesn’t even have a notable controversy or storytelling quirk that might merit artistic evaluation, a dreadful inclusion in the Berlinale competition program.
You may struggle to name a dull Huppert performance, but as Eva, the great French actor is going through the motions. She plays the titular character, a secretive escort to the rich who finds herself besotted by Ulliel’s Bertrand, who himself has closely-guarded backstory.

There was a minor kerfuffle during the Berlinale press conference for Benoît Jacquot’s “Eva” when a journalist asked star Isabelle Huppert how she achieved such a degree of eroticism in the film without getting nude. “You have a very bizarre idea of eroticism,” came the actress’ withering second-degree burn of a reply.
And, to Huppert’s credit, it was a ridiculous question. Ridiculous because French cinema has spent more than a century illustrating that T&A has precious little to do with screen sensuality, ridiculous because Huppert could make a Haneke movie feel erotic, and ridiculous because Jacquot’s overblown melodrama is a film about people who disguise themselves by how they dress.
A limp, sudsy adaptation of James Hadley Chase’s 1945 novel “Eve” (a potboiler that Joseph Losey once spun into a Jeanne Moreau vehicle of the same name), “Eva” begins with an engaging sequence that instantly sets the...

Poor box office performance of English-language slate, including Miss Sloane and The Circle, to blame.
Luc Besson’s mini-major EuropaCorp has posted a company record losses of $136m (€119.9m) for the 2016-17 financial year.
In a statement released in Paris on Wednesday morning (July 28), the company said consolidated revenue rose 3% to $171m (€151.7m) but net operating cash flows had fallen dramatically to $2.7m (€2.4m) for 2016-17, down from $92m (€81m) in the previous financial year.
The slight increase in consolidated revenue had been driven by foreign sales and an increase in Svod and TV sales to the Us, EuropaCorp said.
EuropaCorp had already officially announced in February that the company would post losses in 2016-17 that were “substantially higher” than losses in previous financial years. The company did not give further details but local media and entertainment analysts suggested a figure of around €35m ($39m).

Call it the battle of two Meryls. In one corner, there's the record-breaking queen of American cinema, Meryl Streep. Her opponent? The so-called "Meryl Streep of France," Isabelle Huppert. And on Feb. 26, the two will battle it out for the Best Actress honor at the 89th annual Academy Awards. But who is Isabelle Huppert, and how did she seemingly become an overnight film sensation in her 60s? (Spoiler alert: there was nothing "overnight" about it.) Here are eight things you need to know about the actress. She's been in the acting game for a long time. Although the current buzz around Huppert is regarding her Oscar nominated turn in Elle as a businesswoman on the hunt for her rapist, the 63-year old made her silver screen debut 40 years ago, starring in the French film, La Dentellière. You might be saying her name wrong. Fight the urge to rely on American English phonetics.
