George A. Romero was a horror revolutionary. Not only is his work an example of quality filmmaking and storytelling, but he pushed the horror genre into new territory, bridging the gap between the ‘50s horror icons like the Universal Monsters and the more modern, politically charged thrillers of the ‘70s and ‘80s. But between the work done on two iconic horror films, “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead,” Romero actually shot a feature, “Amusement Park,” that has never been released.

In the 1970s, Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero was commissioned by the Lutheran Society to make a movie – the filmmaker’s only work-for-hire film in his entire career. Shudder has acquired rights to George A. Romero’s “The Amusement Park,” the film from the “Night of the Living Dead” helmer that was considered lost until a print surfaced in 2018.
The AMC Networks’ horror-centric streaming service will make the movie available in North America, U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand this summer.
After a print of “Amusement Park” was tracked down by Daniel Kraus, longtime collaborator with director Guillermo del Toro, in 2018, the 1973 film was restored in 4K by IndieCollect in New York City.
“Amusement Park” was commissioned by the Lutheran Society with the charter make a movie about shoddy treatment of the elderly in contemporary society. But Romero’s 52-minute production was never released because the nonprofit group found it to be too gruesome for mainstream audiences.
“Amusement Park” stars Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself increasingly disoriented and isolated during a visit to the amusement park.

Netflix is believed to have swooped for world rights to Edward Berger’s long-anticipated adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” starring Daniel Brühl (pictured).
The project is understood to be among the biggest-budget films to ever come out of Germany, with production set to begin in March. Former Washington Post journalist Ian Stokell and producer and actor Lesley Paterson penned the script, which is based on the classic novel about World War I by former German infantryman Erich Maria Remarque, published in 1929 and taught in curricula around the world for its sobering account of the futility of war.

When an actor is accused of wrongdoing and the film or TV project is already under way — or even wrapped — sometimes directors and producers go back and reshoot their scenes with a recast replacement.
“All the Money in the World”
After Kevin Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct, director Ridley Scott went back into production on “All the Money in the World” and reshot all of the actor’s scenes, this time with Christopher Plummer playing billionaire J. Paul Getty. (Plummer received an Oscar nomination for the role.)

But after Westwick faced accusations of sexual misconduct, the network went back and re-shot the limited series with “Magic City” alum Christian Cooke recast in the role.

When did American kids movies become so preoccupied with death? When did being a beloved relative in a colorful animated children’s adventure become as much of a death sentence as being a teenager in a “Final Destination” film? Loss and the lessons that come with it are somewhat foundational to a genre that’s still associated with the likes of “Bambi” and — more recently — “The Lion King,” but over the last few years it’s started to feel as if feature-length cartoons have embraced their function as surrogate grieving counselors for young people who need a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.
This is not a complaint: As someone raised on the grief-adjacent “My Neighbor Totoro” (and comforted much later in life by the wisdom and beauty of a film like “Kubo and the Two Strings”), I know that steering children through their worst sadness is...

The absurd path of this silly and rather enjoyable animated movie is all the more startling because it turned out kind of…decent. It all started in 2010 when screenwriter and eventual co-director Scott Christian Sava wrote an innocuous family comedy about a man who saves his family’s circus with the help of some magic cookies that can turn people into animals. The journey to get it made was almost as strange: “Animal Crackers” scored investment from Harvey Weinstein three years later, a flotilla of Chinese firms agreed to put up the rest of the money, “Mulan” co-director Tony Bancroft came aboard to help steer the ship, and “Despicable Me” character designer Carter Goodrich was hired to help with the animation. With those pieces in play, a rather astonishing variety of famous voices came aboard to help bring the story to life.

Hollywood films are more inclusive of LGBTQ characters than they’ve ever been, but GLAAD says there is still much to be done, slapping all eight of the major Hollywood studios with a grade of “insufficient” or worse when it comes to representation of LGBTQ characters on screen.
That’s because while GLAAD has counted a slight rise in gay, lesbian or bisexual characters in the top-grossing movies of 2019 compared to the year prior, more than half of those characters received less than three minutes of total screen time. And transgender characters – for the third year in a row – remain completely absent from major studio films.
It all comes from GLAAD’s latest Studio Responsibility Index, the eighth year in which the organization has conducted the study. It found that in 2019, a record 22 of 118 films (18.6%) released by Hollywood’s major distributors had LGBTQ characters compared to just 20 of 110 films in...

George A. Romero is frequently referred to as the godfather of the zombie movie, and for good reason. Starting with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, the filmmaker’s work both established and defined many of the tropes associated with shuffling hordes of the undead that are still widely used across various forms of media in the modern day.
Although Romero would continue adding to his zombie collection over the next four decades, suffering from greatly diminished returns in the process as 2009’s Survival of the Dead arrived to little fanfare before quickly being forgotten about completely, he didn’t work exclusively within one of horror’s most popular sub-genre’s either.
The Crazies, Creepshow, Knightriders and Martin all received enthusiastic reviews as Romero proved on numerous occasions that his talents for working in the realm of horror extended far beyond just churning out zombie sequels, but there was one...

The name George A. Romero is revered in the realm of horror. He’s the filmmaker who single-handedly created what modern audiences know as the zombie film. And through his works such as “Dawn of the Dead” and “Night of the Living Dead,” Romero devised the blueprint for adding social commentary to a genre that is mainly known for its frights. With the filmmaker’s passing in 2017, it was believed that fans had seen the last new work from Romero.

WestEnd Films has launched international sales on “Lamya’s Poem,” an animated feature by Alexander Kronemer, which will be part of Annecy’s Works in Progress panel at the digital version of the world’s largest animation festival and market that begins Monday.

WestEnd Films has boarded international sales on Lamya’s Poem, the animated feature whose voice cast includes Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Millie Davis (Wonder) and Faran Tahir (Iron Man).
The film charts the story of a 12-year-old Syrian refugee who is given a book of poetry of classic 13th-century Persian poet, Rumi. As the perils of her journey mount, the book becomes a magical gateway.
“The wound is the place where the light enters you,” is one of Rumi’s famous quotes, which inspired the film’s writer-director Alexander Kronemer.
WestEnd will be introducing the feature to buyers this week during Annecy, where it is part of the digital event’s works in progress panels, and next week during the Cannes virtual market where they will show first visuals. ICM is repping North American rights.

It’s not a stretch to say Universal’s “Cats” and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” had two of the most polarizing movie trailers in recent memory. Both caught fire online for all the wrong reasons after fans on social media torched the questionable CGI.
“Cats,” an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, used a new science called “digital fur technology” to bring the four-legged felines to the big screen. The expensive CGI, which had been teased relentlessly, would have been too costly to completely retool before it was unleashed over the holidays. The film became a box office disaster and lost $100 million theatrically after factoring in marketing costs.
“Sonic” could have easily suffered the same fate. But rather than releasing the movie when it was initially slated to debut last November, Paramount delayed the film so director Jeff Fowler could redesign the animated character, whose creepy teeth initially...

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are making the most of some child-free time at the Sundance Film Festival.
The couple was photographed sitting together at the premiere of Kunis’ new film, Four Good Days, at the Eccles Center Theatre in Park, City Utah on Sunday.
The two — who tied the knot in 2015 and share two children: daughter Wyatt Isabelle, 5, and son Dimitri Portwood, 3 — intertwined their arms together as they watched the film.
The actors kept their date style casual with Ashton, 41, donning a white T-shirt with a scarf while Kunis, 36, wearing a black, long-sleeve top with dark jeans and gold jewelry.

The two — who tied the knot in 2015 and share two children: daughter Wyatt Isabelle, 5, and son Dimitri Portwood, 3 — intertwined their arms together as they watched the film.

It also launches Season 3 of “Marvel’s Runaways” on Dec. 13. If that wasn’t enough, several movies from the “Fast & Furious” franchise are hitting Hulu, plus both “Kill Bill: Volume 1” and “Kill Bill: Volume 2.”
Those dedicated to consuming holiday-only content can watch NBC’s “Holidays With the Houghs” with Julianne and Derek Hough, a song-and-dance performance show featuring special guest artist performances. An adorable yeti will help close out a surprisingly promising September at the domestic box office.
Universal’s animated adventure “Abominable” is expected to debut in first place and should collect $17 million to $20 million from 4,200 North American theaters this weekend. If estimates hold, those ticket sales would rank as the biggest opening weekend this year for an original animated film. (That benchmark belongs to Paramount’s “Wonder Park” with $15.8 million.)
The film should benefit from being one of the few offerings catering to families. Currently, movie theater marquees are stacked with adult-skewing titles like Focus Features’ “Downton Abbey,” Disney-Fox’s “Ad Astra” and Stx’s “Hustlers.” September isn’t a traditionally busy month at the box office, but “Downton Abbey,” “Hustlers” and “It: Chapter Two” have all been embraced by audiences. That’s welcome news, considering the year-to-date box office is down over 5%, according to Comscore. Fall offerings like “Joker...

Chinese animation “Nezha” continued its run as China’s biggest hit of the summer, maintaining its top spot at the box office even 25 days into its run with a weekend gross of $41.2 million. The tally made it this weekend’s fourth highest grossing film worldwide.
Meanwhile, two other new animated titles performed unremarkably. The flop of Tencent spinoff company China Literature Media’s new animation “The King’s Avatar: For the Glory” on its debut made it clear that just trotting out any old locally-made cartoon based on a well-known IP isn’t enough to spark “Nezha”-style box office domination. It grossed just $9.3 million, according to data from the Artisan Gateway consultancy, despite being an adaptation of a very popular online novel about an professional e-sports player that has top ratings for fan engagement. This made it fifth at the China box office and fourteenth globally.

It’s a truth so universally acknowledged that it seldom bears repeating: America sees animation as a genre, while the rest of the world recognizes it as an art form unto itself. Here, it’s just for kids, and most of the movies that Hollywood makes with it are about ice princesses or angry birds or plastic sporks gripped by existential crises. Beyond our borders, however, animation can be for anyone, and tell stories about anything. One look at something from Studio Ghibli or Cartoon Saloon is enough to appreciate how much we lose by treating “cartoons” as a lesser form of cinema that chiefly exists to placate young children; a massive animation department wasting its talents on the likes of “Wonder Park” is like someone buying a Ferrari just to drive around a golf course.

So right now all the entertainment pages are filled reports of “franchise fatigue”, that audiences are just not plunking down their moola and getting in line for this year’s models of….X-Men and Men in Black, to name two of many. The case could certainly be made for animated features with the soft returns of the “trained dragons’, Lego, and the swiftly sinking “pets”. But then the original cartoons Missing Link, Wonder Park, and those Ugly Dolls barely made a ripple at the box office. Not to worry, those dull days are over! Cue the music of that Thin Lizzy dance classic (apologies for the title tweak) because “The Toys are Back in Town”. Yes, after a year since Incredibles 2, the fine folks at Pixar are back with another addition to the “game changer” that began the CGI feature flicks. Yes, this is Toy Story 4. Oh, but you...

By now, audiences have caught on to the way American distributors tend to stockpile their quality movies for end-of-year award-season release, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t treasures to be found in the first two quarters. In fact, sometimes it’s the movies that aren’t making a self-important Oscar push that wind up hitting closest to our hearts — and providing respite from such recent turkeys as “The Beach Bum” and “Wonder Park.” With quality to be found everywhere from blockbuster superhero sagas to niche-release art-house fare, it turns out 2019 is off to a good start. Variety chief critics Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge pick their favorite releases of the year so far.
Avengers: Endgame Marvel Studios

Stx Entertainment’s “UglyDolls” is set to hit Chinese theaters on Aug. 8, despite rising tensions between China and the U.S. over their trade war. China’s Alibaba Pictures is a co-producer and co-financier of the film.
The movie was originally announced as having a mainland release date of May 31. No reason has been given for its rescheduling.
Alibaba announced its involvement in the film in January, with the company’s president, Zhang Wei, expressing excitement that the partnership would allow Alibaba to “build out this beloved global intellectual property for years to come.” But the movie flopped in the U.S., where it was critically panned. Directed by Kelly Asbury (“Shrek 2”) on a $45 million budget, and featuring the voices of Emma Roberts, Kelly Clarkson and Nick Jonas, “UglyDolls” has grossed less than $20 million in the U.S. since its May 3 debut.

As most of the schools finally free the tots and teens for Summer break, it’s time to hop aboard the rickety rollercoaster that is the 2019 slate of animated feature films. To paraphrase All About Eve’s Margo Lane, “It’s a bumpy ride”. We started with the “better than expected’ modest thrills of the last of the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy. But sequels were not a sure bet as the Lego follow-up took a dive, quickly joined by the forgettable Wonder Park and Ugly Dolls. Laika’s Missing Link was an inventive ray of sunshine, but like most of their releases tepid box office kept the critical darling from soaring. Now comes another sequel as the folks at Universal’s animation off-shoot Illumination hope to have another franchise aside from Gru and the Minions (and the Seuss flicks like The Lorax and last year’s Grinch). They...

Paramount Pictures continues to be a key element to the Viacom turnaround plan, delivering another quarter of operating income growth in the second quarter despite flat revenue and modest box office thus far in 2019.
During a conference call with Wall Street analysts, Viacom CEO Bob Bakish said the studio has improved its profitability by more than $500 million in the past three years. Jim Gianopulos took the helm in March 2017, and Bakish noted that the final titles green-lit by his predecessor, Brad Grey, have all passed into memory after the March release of Wonder Park.
“Under Jim’s leadership, this is again an iconic studio where people are bringing projects first,” Bakish said. “the slate going forward is strong. It’s really coming together.”

Though “Avengers: Endgame” remains the uncontested top title in China, where it broke dozens of box office records within days to emerge as the most successful foreign film ever in the country, the surprise upstart of the weekend was the Lebanese film “Capernaum,” which has become a breakout sensation nearly a year after its Cannes festival debut.
“Endgame” took home another $64 million this weekend, bringing its total mainland tally to $579 million so far. Residents in China had four days off last week from Wednesday through Saturday for the May Day national holiday, but were back at work Sunday. “Capernaum” debuted in China on Monday, April 29 – a day when “Avengers,” coming off its stunning five-day debut weekend, had never yet dipped below 87% market share.
The Arabic- and Amharic-language film took in $12.5 million over the three-day weekend, according to consultancy Artisan Gateway, already more than quadruple early predictions that it would make only around $3 million in China.

The romantic comedy starring Miranda Tapsell, Gwilym Lee, Kerry Fox, Huw Higginson and Shari Sebbens wooed $1.1 million at 287 locations and $1.588 million with paid previews for Universal Pictures.
The opening was slightly behind that of Jeremy Sims’ Last Cab to Darwin’s $1.14 million, which finished with $7.4 million.
So, given the largely positive reviews and favourable word-of-mouth, the film co-written by Tapsell and Joshua Tyler and produced by Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight and Kylie du Fresne and Kojo’s Kate Croser could well reach $7 million.
The launch date was locked in before Universal took over eOne’s theatrical releases and before anyone knew the latest Marvel title would smash industry records in Australia and globally.

As the old saying goes, you can make it fast, you can make it cheap, and you can make it good, but you can’t have all three. In the case of STXfilms and Alibaba’s UglyDolls, it was the first two points making for a disastrous start at the box office of $8.5M for this reported $45M-$53M net production, intended to launch the mini-major’s foray into the feature animation space.
Based on this weekend’s box office results, it’s clear that the doll line isn’t as universal as originally perceived by Stx. Stx eventually got ahold of UglyDolls and believed that the property would resonate over in China. While the pic has yet to lock down a release date there, box office history for family pics in China is against UglyDolls: family fare under-indexes there, with even Pixar films challenged.

“Avengers: Endgame” is now the second-biggest movie of all time at the international box office.
This weekend, Marvel’s latest juggernaut amassed another $282 million from 55 foreign markets, taking it to $1.569 billion in ticket sales overseas. That puts “Endgame” ahead of “Titanic” ($1.528 billion), and behind only “Avatar” ($2.028 billion) at the international box office.
“Avengers: Endgame” is also officially the second-highest grossing film globally with $2.188 billion worldwide, passing “Titanic” (2.187 billion) in just 11 days. “Avatar” is still the biggest movie to date with $2.8 billion.
This weekend, “Avengers: Endgame” remained the No. 1 film in all foreign territories aside from Japan. The 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done unprecedented business in China, where it is now the highest-grossing Hollywood film with $575 million. Other top territories include the United Kingdom ($89.9 million) and Korea ($82.1 million).
In India, “Endgame” recently passed “Avengers: Infinity War” and “The Jungle Book” to become the biggest non-local title with $52 million.

The astonishing five-day haul of $331 million (RMB2.22 billion) for “Avengers: Endgame” in China has set a record for the country’s highest-grossing opening weekend of any film, Western or local, and puts the Marvel finale on track to eclipse in about one week what its predecessor, “Infinity War,” made during its entire monthlong run in the Middle Kingdom.
Since its debut last Wednesday, Disney’s “Endgame” has blasted away all competitors to rule the box office with a nearly 90% market share, hogging nearly 75% of all screenings in the entire country. It made $176 million of that five-day tally from Friday through Sunday, according to data from the Artisan Gateway consultancy. The No. 2 film over the weekend, holdover thriller “P Storm,” made $1.4 million – or less than half a percent of “Endgame’s” total.
