Contemporary gay short film
dibeyendu26 May 2017
Just watched this film at the Kashish International Queer Film Festival in Mumbai, where it is part of the Narrative Shorts Competition. The film is about a gay Syrian refugee in Amsterdam, who meets a local guy at a bar and goes home with him. On the way, they encounter a homeless Syrian refugee who asks for a cigarette and then calls the two faggots. The subject matter is very contemporary, and political, which gives the film an edge. All the best to director Nish Gera.

A beautiful short-film with a ugly and actual reality...

Warning: Spoilers
I'm pretty much reticent about short films, and about this Syrian the crisis that has made all Europeans aware of the dangers in a world with borders and outside of the European Union comfort.

For me, it was hard to explain to my family living in Portugal, how lives are being destroyed and left apart, the fruit of the horror and egoism of radicals. I am a young man with 27, that didn't know how to explain to my mother what is going on in Syrian, like many other places on this planet, and I was struggling especially with the fact that I didn't know how to make some of my family members see this issue without being naive or judgment, and extend their hand to help, support and even protect those that today are needing most.

I didn't know until this movie, that goes politically to the subjects that are marginalizing our nations and refugees, that is the conditions inflexible and the lack of guidance. This short-film is a masterpiece is also very sentimental without ever make us feel could be our story, and if we unlock our mind and let it develop with the flow of the images, we will find ourselves crying, because is not a simple film, is a short film that has so much on that 15 minutes of another documentary, without jumping on the sensationalism of media that has been more than enough horrific and images of dark.

Donald Trumps must see this short film and then will understand what could happen to anyone, because rich or not, when you run away from your home, from your country, fearing your ölife or for the life of your beloved ones, you run fast, you jump borders and you arrive exhausted with a heart like sand, but alive. That is the sad story of millions this summer, and this seems not have an end.

That is why I am now saying, refugees are my brothers, are my people, and whatever I can do to help, I will do in double, because the only way to receive back love and compassion is actually by giving it first and for free.

THANK YOU! "Born in France, but my nationality is Portuguese, I mostly speak English, and I do live in Germany. More European is almost impossible. So I will dare to welcome you all in name of Europe!" - Sydney Fernandes
