A scientist devotes every waking hour to his mysterious investigations, paying little attention to his two young sons. While he works, his older son torments his younger brother, unchecked by his distracted father. When the house is flooded with blinding light, the youngest son hides, feeling that something is different: is there something in the house with them? He approaches his father's study to find his father gone, his equipment still functioning, but flashing warnings and angry sirens. The son starts to play, pressing buttons, flicking interesting looking switches, and his haphazard actions soon put some kind of process into place. A laser hits a rotating gem, and a dark mass emerges, pulled out of the fabric of spacetime itself. It seems to have consciousness, and as it explores the room, it gives a hint of its capabilities - animating the boxes that litter the room and forming a giant box-automaton. The young son and the entity play, until the older brother discovers them, and smashes the boxes apart. Angered, the entity leaves the boxes, and moves towards the younger son. His eyes turn jet black, and what started as a childish enmity takes a darker turn.
