From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.
After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.
But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

It's Christmas of 1971, and students Clara (Georgia Acken) and Samantha (Madison Baines) are stuck at the Blackvale School for Girls with their empathetic teacher (Chloë Levine) and the school's resourceful chef (Gus Kenworthy). But while the quartet does their best to embrace the spirit of the season, a sacrificial cult led by Maisie (Olivia Scott Welch) and Jude (Mena Massoud) soon arrives on their front step with sinister intentions that are far more scary than any door-to-door Christmas carolers... although by the end of the night it just might be the cult members who wish they had never crashed the festivities at the Blackvale School for Girls.

Watching Christmas horror movies is a proud tradition for spooky fiends looking to escape their post-Halloween blues and the agonizing two months of forced consumerism and awful music blasting in every department store. The films in this very specific category are known for subverting the cheer and innocence associated with the holiday, and often focus on characters experiencing isolation because their family situation is far from those depicted in generic Hallmark Christmas movies. Every year, we are treated to new ideas on how to make Christmas creepy, and this year fans should be snuggling up on the couch to view is The Sacrifice Game.

Plot: Murderers seeking to summon a demon raid a boarding school on Christmas Eve, holding the few people there captive… then they get more than they bargained for when the demon is revealed.
Review: Five years ago, Jenn Wexler made her feature directorial debut with the very entertaining throwback slasher The Ranger, which put a group of punk-style criminals up against a psychotic forest ranger – and came off like the closest we’ll probably ever get to seeing a Psycho Cop 3. For her follow-up, Wexler has made a ‘70s throwback supernatural horror film. And while The Ranger wasn’t directly said to be set in the ‘80s or early ‘90s, The Sacrifice Game is very clear about when it’s set: December 1971, in the days leading up to Christmas.
Mena Massoud, Olivia Scott Welch, Derek Johns, and Laurent Pitre play a quartet of murderers who have been racking up a substantial body count this December,...

Submarine Entertainment is picking up worldwide sales rights on Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial debut “Crumb Catcher.” The move comes just ahead of the darkly comic thriller’s Fantastic Fest world premiere.
Skotchdopole wrote, directed, edited, and produced the movie and Submarine Entertainment, a notable sales and production company, will launch sales out of the festival, which runs from Sept. 21 to Sept. 28 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. “Crumb Catcher” was described by Fantastic Fest programmer Anna Bogutskaya as a “chamber piece that melds extreme anxiety with the worst salesmanship imaginable.” The film follows a newlywed couple held captive by an entrepreneur desperate to finance his outlandish invention with a blackmail plot.
With ten years of experience working with Glass Eye Pix, the New York independent genre production outfit led by horror auteur Larry Fessenden, Skotchdopole has amassed numerous credits on several films, including working as the cinematographer on Fessenden’s “Depraved,...

Following a successful world premiere at London’s FrightFest, Dark Sky Films today announced it has acquired North American distribution rights to Herd, an action-driven horror film and the directorial debut from Steven Pierce, co-written by Pierce and James Allerdyce. Herd stars Ellen Adair (Trick, Cryptid), Mitzi Akaha (Bashira), Jeremy Holm (The Ranger, Brooklyn 45, Black Mold), Amanda Fuller (Starry Eyes, All the Creatures Were Stirring) among others. The film, which premiered on IMAX at Cineworld to a sold-out crowd in Leicester Square, London, will be released in theaters and on VOD in October 2023.
The distribution arrangement was negotiated by Greg Newman, Executive Vice President of Dark Sky Films, and Bill Straus of Bridge Independent.

Summertime might be a bit too early to start planning for Christmas (though it's never too early to plan for Halloween), but one thing you should definitely plan to do this holiday season is watch Jenn Wexler's The Sacrifice Game. The stylish supernatural horror has everything you could want in a Christmas movie: tree lights, gingerbread men, and murderous cult freaks
The Sacrifice Game had its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival (though you'll have to wait to read my review later when the movie drops on Shudder). I got the chance to meet with director Jenn Wexler and her co-writer/husband Sean Redlitz to talk about the movie. I was very excited for the opportunity, since I'm a big fan of Wexler's debut feature The Ranger. Jenn Wexler's sophomore feature "The Sacrifice Game" bursts with behind-the-camera confidence as a creepy, culty, Christmassy midnighter romp. It's one of those horror movies that aims to make horror fun again, feeling at home on VHS shelves or snuck behind parents' backs for an unapproved after-bedtime watch. Wexler's seasonal genre package is tightly wrapped, keeping the audience in a giddy state of suspense as twists and turns unfold. Shades of cinematic parallels to everything from "The Blackcoat's Daughter" or "The Babysitter" make "The Sacrifice Game" this playfully disturbing road-trip killing spree with a dangerous bite, appealing to the devils inside us hungry for bad-vibes horror served with a crooked smile.
The film takes place over Christmas 1971, at and around Blackvale School for Girls, where students Samantha (Madison Baines) and outcast Clara (Georgia Acken) will spend their holiday break with supervising teacher Rose (Chloë Levine). Bad fortune brings greasy-haired Jude...

Director/Producer Jenn Wexler’s sophomore feature, The Sacrifice Game, continues her streak for unpredictable narratives centered around teen girls. Unlike the anarchic ’80s punk rock spirit of her feature directorial debut, The Ranger, The Sacrifice Game shifts gears in tone and era to examine friendship amidst a demonically charged home invasion over Christmas break. Its narrative turns, characters that challenge perceptions, and slasher-like bloodletting yield a devilishly fun new entry in holiday horror.
Three days before Christmas in 1971, the remaining students of Blackvale, a Catholic boarding school for girls, depart for the holidays. Well, almost all. Circumstances leave teens Samantha (Madison Baines) and Clara (Georgia Acken) stuck on the premises under the care of chaperone Rose (The Ranger‘s Chloë Levine) and Rose’s boyfriend Jimmy (Gus Kenworthy). A few years ago, I had a lot of fun watching Jenn Wexler’s feature directorial debut The Ranger (you can read my 8/10 review Here), so I’m looking forward to checking out Wexler’s second feature, the 1970s-set supernatural horror film The Sacrifice Game. My favourite film festival is back for another year! With its wide variety of films, spanning almost every genre, there’s literally a film for everyone, and this year’s Fantasia is no different. Although the full line-up has yet to be announced, he’s a handful of the movies to be looking out for already.
Lovely, Dark and Deep – This is the directorial debut of Teresa Sutherland, writer of The Wind and on Midnight Mass – a small but excellent C.V. Starring Barbarian’s Georgina Campbell in its lead, she plays a park ranger in an isolated forest post, the site of multiple disappearances. This weekend marks the release of writer/director Ted Geoghegan's third feature Brooklyn 45, now streaming on Shudder after a successful festival run earlier this year. Set in a single room over the course of one bitter cold night between Christmas and New Years Eve in 1945, a small group of war buddies get together to support an old friend…and commune with the dead in an impromptu seance. Naturally, the night does not go as planned. Secrets are revealed, morals are tested, and the group is visited by a ghost or two.
We sat down ahead of the release of Brooklyn 45 to talk with Ted Geoghegan about the process of fleshing out his military-focused story with his father (a retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant), why he enjoys working in specific periods of time, and what lessons modern American can learn from Post-wwii America.

Salem, Massachusetts brews up more Halloween activities than you can shake a broom at each October, so it was logical for Salem Horror Fest to take place during the spookiest month of the year. For its sixth installment, however, the festivities have moved to the spring, making it much easier to attend without throngs of tourists.
If last night’s opening night ceremony — headlined by a screening of Candyman with Tony Todd in attendance — is any indication, horror lovers will show up any time of the year. Held at the Peabody Essex Museum, the event kicked off with poignagnt opening remarks by festival director Kay Lynch. She briefly outlined the evolution of Salem Horror, which was born out of her desire for catharsis after the 2016 election.
With folk horror being a common theme among some of this year’s programming, Kier-La Janisse was enlisted to deliver a keynote address. Much like how her essential documentary,...

Scripted by Geoghegan and his late father, a disabled Air Force Veteran-turned-history teacher, Brooklyn 45 has the following synopsis: Friday, December 27, 1945. Five military veterans gather in the ornate parlour of a Brooklyn brownstone. Best friends since childhood, they’ve reunited to support their troubled host – but when his invitation for cocktails turns into an impromptu séance,...

Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) has also joined the cast of Wexler’s latest.

Producers are Jib Polhemus and Volition Media’s Michael Jefferson (Land of Bad). The film is executive-produced by Adam Beasley and Cindy Bru of Volition Media.
Highland is representing worldwide rights with production slated to start this spring in Minnesota.
Rising actress John-Kamen is known for Ready Player One, Netflix mini-series The Stranger, Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City, and most notably for her role as the villainous Ghost in Marvel’s Ant-Man And The Wasp. She will reprise her role in the upcoming film Thunderbolts.

Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.
Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.
The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

Another year has come and gone, and it was another great one for horror. Theatrical horror, indie horror, physical media, streaming, books, TV—there was so much good stuff I couldn’t even get to all of it, though I gave it my best effort. Here are some of my favorites of 2019 in no particular order.
Shudder: In just a few short years, Shudder has become the single most essential must-have for every horror fan. Their library grows more expansive and impressive every week, their curation of beloved favorites, smaller and lesser-known indies, and horror from around the globe impeccable. This year alone they featured the likes of Tigers Are Not Afraid, the Tom Savini documentary Smoke and Mirrors, One Cut of the Dead, Belzebuth, The Furies, Get My Gun, Hagazussa, Knife + Heart, The Ranger, the documentary Horror Noire, The Head Hunter, and so, so many more. One of my all-time favorite horror events was experiencing a live performance of Tales from Beyond the Pale at the Overlook Film Festival in 2016. Such an incredible amount of work is put into these horror audio dramas from the cast, sound engineer, and especially series creators Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid. If they announce any new live performances, it's absolutely worth your time to make a trip to see it, but they're giving horror fans the ability to listen to new horror audio dramas from the comfort of their home every week.

It’s been 201 years since Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” was originally published, without her name on it. That injustice was rectified a few years later, but it’s still happening today. “Depraved” doesn’t merely play off of the ideas and themes of Shelley’s groundbreaking novel; it adapts it fairly closely — albeit in the present day — and somehow the movie doesn’t even mention her in the credits. “Depraved” indeed.
The latest film from Larry Fessenden, directing his first feature since 2013’s “Beneath,” tells the story of an army medic who dreams of putting mutilated soldiers back together. Henry teams up with — oh, these on-the-nose names! — Polidori, the heir to a pharmaceutical empire, to steal body parts and raise the dead. As you can imagine, Henry’s girlfriend Elizabeth (Ana Kayne) is highly skeptical.
But, shirking tradition, Fessenden’s screenplay doesn’t tell the “Frankenstein” story from the mad scientists’ perspectives.

Happy Friday, dear readers! Now that it’s officially Pet Sematary weekend, we have one final video interview to share with you all, featuring the new adaptation’s breakout star, Jeté Laurence, who portrays Ellie Creed in the film (and also recently appeared in Jenn Wexler’s The Ranger as well). During our interview with the up-and-coming actress, she talked about the duality of her character in Pet Sematary (2019) and how working with directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer really helped her understand who Ellie was.
Laurence also discussed how she got to take on a lot of her own stunts in the film, and reassured us that working on the new Pet Sematary wasn’t nearly as scary as it seems in the movie.
Look for the new Pet Sematary in theaters now, courtesy of Paramount Pictures.
