Nightingale encounters more hostility from the church as he investigates the apparently ritual murder of Father Ambrose but finds as link to Marlott. Marlott himself, having learnt that Jemima is dead, assumes the name Jack Martins and works with ex-priest Spence to bury corpses of victims of the plague that is sweeping the capital. He takes lodgings with Esther Rose, who has been given a commission by Dipple and, helped by Spence, decides to investigate the archdeacon's corpse, hoping to connect it to Hervey.
