I can still hear you
nogodnomasters7 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens in Arizona in 1897. A brothel is shot up and the male occupants are all killed by two large masked men reminiscent of modern-day fictional crime films. The production jumps to 1904 in the nearby mining town of Ruby. A strike has caused the Pinkerton boys to come to town which leads to many dead miners. Two church lady witnesses manage to escape. They manage to make their way out of town and wind up on the ranch of Michael (Trace Adkins) and Angel (Jeff Fahey). At this point, the script writes itself.

The film was on the hokey side. Not much imagination plot wise. Dialog was not bad. The soundtrack was decent. It is basically mindless entertainment.

Guide: Swearing (C-sucker). No sex or nudity.

A decent western

Warning: Spoilers
I was really enjoying this movie. The storyline was on. The costuming looked correct for the period.

The last 20 minutes, including the shootout scene(my spoiler), is what lost me. Senseless Hollywood, let's wrap this movie up crap

The movie was predictable from that point forward. You knew who was going to get shot. One of those movies where people have just avoided death, the villain is still after them, but they need to take time for a hug

I really had hopes for this movie. I still enjoyed it, but seemed to get wrapped up with a quick Hollywood ending In real life, people want to live. They take cover and do smart things. Disappointed but not upset.

Hokey Western
trabuccojoan6 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really love a good western, this wasn't one. I didn't expect Trace Adkins to be the main lead of the entire movie. He had the majority of the speaking parts. The acting was poor though out. Not once did the "hero's" get shot except at the end despite standing wide open in shoot-outs with multiple bad guys shooting at them. The shoot-outs were poorly done.

The scene at the hotel when Michael and Angel are supposed to be on High alert guarding the woman. William gets drunk, falls asleep and the bad guys capture him. The females especially the "young girl" doesn't fit the part of a young, venerable helpless girl.

They kill Tom Berenger right off in the first 5 minutes. The best actor in the cast. You won't see Llyod Pierce till the end and his acting is poor in the part of the sheriff.

There is one actor that gives a good performance as a bad guy and has some character and substance that was, Edward Finlay. Very much a B or even C movie.

My Aunt Rented It, So I Felt Obligated To Watch It
deadfallproductions6 January 2024
Should I start with the camera work, production design, direction or the dialogue? Sometimes it's really painful to see decent actors in their twilight.

The camera and lighting are lacking. Looks like DSLR footage. Movies set in the old west don't have old props. Everything would be relatively new. This looks like it was decorated out of someone's grandmother's basement. I guess I shouldn't blame the bad acting on the director, but he allowed the overacting. As for the dialogue, it was clunky and awkward, at best.

I was going to give it three stars, just for the casting of Jeff Fahey, but had to take away one for Tom Berenger.

Hey, at the end of the day, Lee got his film made.

Low rent producter/writer, swing and a miss

When Trace Adkins is your main character things are not good. Perhaps they didn't want to bust a budget and just hired good actors for 5 minute bit parts.

In any case, this is not even worth watching longer than the intro 10 minutes and most of us can predict the rest. 1/10.

"Well Ma'am, we're a lot of things, but good we ain't."

Warning: Spoilers
This is a Western you have to stick with beyond the opening where it has the feel of a low budget movie. It picks up when two church ladies arrive at the cabin of a couple desperate looking hombres, Michael (Trace Adkins) and Angel (Jeff Fahey). I really liked the characterization Trace Adkins brought to his bounty hunter type character, speaking in a very low key, guttural voice and making you wonder when he might explode into violence. That eventually happens, but the story keeps you wondering about him and Angel, and when they might eventually take advantage of former prostitute Elizabeth (Victoria Pratt) and her younger associate Kara (Spencer Locke). The two women were forced to flee the town of Ruby when Pinkerton mercenaries led by Thomas Barclay (James Russo) killed the town's priest on behalf of the Miller Colfax Mining Company in response to the local miners striking for higher wages and better working conditions. Accepting the women's offer of murdered Father Callahan's (Tom Berenger) life savings to deliver them to safety, Michael and Angel retrieve their cache of weapons and ammunition to take on an errand of mercy that would result in violence and bloodshed. The story almost lost its way when Michael expressed his doubts about following through with the mission by absconding with the money until his partner reminded him of the code they swore by after Angels' wife and daughter were killed years prior. Angel's resolve is made even more determined by the uncanny resemblance of Kara to his own murdered daughter, a point that could have been exploited if Michael hadn't reminded him that his daughter was really dead. Don't expect a nice and tidy outcome for this Western, as a few things go awry on the way to a final denouement. Though Pinkerton boss Barclay meets his demise at the hands of Michael after one of his henchmen murders Elizabeth, Angel suffers a gut shot that would prove fatal as well. Wounded during an exchange with Barclay, Michael recovers enough to finally bring Kara to safety in a bittersweet ending to this tale of frontier justice.

P. S. For some reason, the character names for Trace Adkins, Victoria Pratt, and Spencer Locke are omitted from the cast list and left blank here on IMDb. My attempt to add them was unsuccessful as the fields to make the correction are blocked.

Slow start, then a solid western
scottmarble24 March 2024
I was nervous about this film in the beginning. It looked low budget and the dialogue was not great. The two female characters were unimaginative and James Russo was playing to type. Tom Berenger could not save the beginning of this film. About 20 minutes into the film we are introduced to Michael and Angel. That is when the movie becomes interesting. Trace Adkins and Jeff Fahey play these roles low key. I truly enjoyed Jeff Fahey playing against type. The characters go on a journey and there is a twist. This movie is not a great western, but it is definitely better than most of the low rent, direct to DVD westerns. Watch with low expectations, get past the first 20 minutes, and enjoy.

Best western since "Open Range"
robertmurray-7063715 April 2024
"Among Wolves" is a low budget movie, with no famous stars, but a VERY good script, and VERY good "unknown" actors. The only reason I did not give it 10 stars is that the plot is a bit implausible. But if you accept the unusual situation, and the unusual motivations that the main characters have, it all makes perfect sense. Extremely violent, but not the stupid and completely senseless violence you see in so many movies. The most dangerous killers in this movie act like real killers: they don't talk much, but when they do talk, you should listen carefully. This is a movie about an era and a place (the "old west") when a code of personal honor was more common (and stronger) than it is today. It is a "guy" movie that women can watch without being totally grossed out. It is violent but the situation demands that, and the women characters in this movie are very strong, and in my (male) opinion, I think they are good role models for young women and girls today. We now live in moderately violent times that are going to get much worse in the near future due to the imminent climate change crisis and the social and political upheavals it will cause. This movie will get you talking to your friends and lover(s) about when violence is a necessary evil, and that is very unusual in most of today's movies. "Open Range" was like that, by the way. If you haven't seen it, you should. Finally I do not recommend "Among Wolves" or "Open Range" for young children, or even for older minors or adults, male or female, who are very sensitive to violence.

A simple tale, nicely presented
lindasue-5013318 April 2024
Not sure why the low reviews. I selected this on a whim (never heard of it, and took a gamble by the thumbnail on tubi), AND I'm used to being disappointed. This one did NOT disappoint.

It's a simple and satisfying story. The acting is VERY good, the dialogue enjoyable, excellent cinematography, and the scenery, stunning!

And it's a little thing that makes or breaks a movie for me: the story did not "just stop". Like, with no ending...and to me that kind of ending tells me that writer is not particularly bright. This one came to good close.

I liked everything about this movie, and it passed the number one test: would I watch it again? Definitely.
