Sex & Nudity

  • A terminal found in a side location narrates an audio log that briefly mentions the "need to reproduce". This specifically talks about a sentient robotic race in the game's universe, implying that they are capable of intercourse.
  • There is one lore entry that implies that two notable characters had sex.
  • A lore entry makes reference to a play, which one character describes as "sexually charged". (the play's details are left unknown)

Violence & Gore

  • Game is a shooter and gameplay is a constant shoot-out. Violence is directed towards clearly evil non-human alien creatures and robots though.
  • In the case of the Fallen enemy faction, killing them with a headshot causes their head to explode. However no blood or gore of any kind is shown.
  • In the early stages of the game, the player finds an outpost with several corpses of fellow Guardians. No blood is seen on their bodies, but the scene has a strong dramatic impact.
  • Killing a Cabal with a headshot knocks off their helmet, which causes a black blood-like liquid to spray from their armor. (a side mission reveals this to be a kind of fuel and not blood)
  • When the player is low on health, blurry red splotches (heavily implied to be blood) cover the screen.
  • There are Player-versus-Player modes available, where the player combats other human characters. There is no blood in this mode, but characters may sometimes grunt or briefly scream in pain when injured or killed.
  • PG-13 for Intense Sci-Fi War Violence throughout.

Profanity

  • Very infrequent uses of mild swears like "damn", "hell", "bastard", and "ass".
  • "Pissed" and "son of a bitch" are used early in the Forsaken campaign.
  • A character in the first expansion begins to say "shit" but is cut off before finishing the word

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of the enemy factions; the "Taken", are shadowy and ghostly black creatures that seem to be made of shadow itself. Potentially scary for younger audiences.
  • A faction known as "the hive" are seen throughout performing dark, satanic-like rituals which can be unsettling for some. This is not portrayed in an intense manner.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • In the early stage of the game, the player is told that the Red Legion (The main enemy in the game) is killing unarmed civilians in the streets, although this is never shown onscreen.
  • The Forsaken campaign begins with a fan-favorite character being killed. A lengthy CG cutscene shows him being constantly attacked by aliens, and he is then finished off with a gunshot to the chest from the antagonist.
  • In a cutscene for the Season of the Chosen storyline, a character cuts their hand with a blade. Blood is shown dripping to the ground, forming a small pool. As of March 2021, this is the only true instance of blood being shown in the game.
