With no hope of private lodging or council housing, and faced with DHSS regulations designed to stamp out 'scrounging' in bed and breakfast hotels, growing numbers of unemployed young people are forced to squat or sleep rough. In the basement of a derelict London rock venue, Red Herrings finds out what it's like to live in a refrigerator. Two squatters' groups, Critical Mass and Black Sheep Collective, believe that the only solution to the housing crisis facing young people lies in direct action.

During International Youth Year, Red Herrings went to East Berlin to meet its young citizens - building workers, Pop musicians, members of the official youth organization, and a young Christian active in the Church Peace Movement - to find out more about the realities of life for the generation who have grown up on the other side of the wall.

But how do artists and consumers reconcile radical causes with the ethics of the music industry? And isn't all music political anyway? Red Herrings talks to Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Aswad's Brinsley Forde backstage at the GLC's 'Jobs for a Change' festival. It also explores the political role of the current indie scene with the Red Guitars, while avant-garde band Test Department show that you don't need lyrics and conventional instruments to make political music.
