The film was shot entirely on location at the (now closed) Great White Horse Hotel in Ipswich, UK, which dates back at least as far as the 17th century. The quote at the beginning of the film which begins "Never was such labyrinths..." is taken from Charles Dickens' novel 'The Pickwick Papers', and is directly referencing the hotel.
Originally opening in 1518, the Great White Horse hotel, had Admiral Lord Nelson and Lord & Lady Hamilton, during November 1800, stay the night. Charles Dickens, too, stayed at the hotel, working as a young reporter, covering a by-election in Sudbury. George II and Louis XVIII of France have also frequented the hotel.
