The box office underperformance of The Mummy back in 2017 notably spelled the end of Universal’s “Dark Universe” plans, the film intended to kickstart a Marvel-style universe for the Universal Monsters to hang around in. With the “Dark Universe” dead on arrival, Universal quickly pivoted to smaller one-shot horror tales, kicking off with The Invisible Man in 2020.
Made on a budget of just $7 million, director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scared up $144 million worldwide right before the pandemic decimated the box office, suggesting that Universal had finally figured out a way to turn their iconic monsters into box office stars again.
But then came Renfield earlier this year, a horror-comedy take on Dracula and his loyal henchman. Made on a reported production budget of $65 million, Renfield was a flop in theaters back in April of this year, sinking its fangs into just $26.7 million at the box office. Just a few weeks ago it looked like this weekend may be the one that finally took Barbie off her perch atop the charts as the highly anticipated Gran Turismo was set to launch. However, Sony recently announced a massive update to their release schedule which saw Gran Turismo get pushed back by two weeks due to the ongoing SAG strikes which doesn’t allow stars to promote their already completed films. As a member of SAG-Aftra, I appreciate the fight we are currently in, but I completely disagree with not allowing the stars to promote their films on their own social media pages. This is work that was completed prior to any strike and represents months, and for some, years of their lives to make something they are proud of and they are prohibited from simply saying “hey, go see my movie this weekend, it’s really good!”
But I digress!

New Delhi, May 18 (Ians) Artificial intelligence (AI) has been fundamental to the development of Novavax’s Covid-Influenza Combination (Cic) vaccine, reflecting a wider industry trend for increased usage of AI in clinical trial design, according to a report on Thursday.
Novavax recently announced results from a Phase II trial for its Cic vaccine. The data indicates that the vaccine candidate is safe, well tolerated, and exhibits a strong immune response comparable to that of both influenza vaccines Fluad and Fluzone HD, as well as Novavax’s Covid vaccine Nvx-CoV2373.
“Novavax’s novel AI approach, which informed dose selection of the Cic vaccine candidate, is paying off. With Phase III trials set to begin later this year, Novavax has a good chance to bring the first combined Covid-influenza vaccine to market,” said Stephanie Kurdach, Infectious Disease Analyst at GlobalData, a data and analytics company, in a statement.

This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2.
While the promise of mysteries, criminal activity, cannibalism, and a story of survival may have gotten most "Yellowjackets" viewers in the door, it has been the complex, fascinating characters that keep folks coming back each week. The major characters of Shauna, Taissa, Natalie, Misty, Lottie, and Van have given us two different timelines to become our beloved favorites, but there are plenty of supporting characters that audiences can't get enough of, and I'm not just talking about their teammates in the cabin.
It's sincerely impressive that "Yellowjackets," a show that prioritizes the stories of women above all else, managed to make a legion of fans (many of whom are queer) become obsessively protective of Shauna's himbo wifeguy Jeff (Warren Kole). And of course, who could forget the consistent comedic relief that comes from a character like Randy (Jeff Holman), the words of wisdom...

The trailer for the long-awaited The Last Voyage of the Demeter is here, giving a glimpse of the horror based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Steering the ship is director André Øvredal, who broke out with the adventurous Troll Hunter before creeping audiences out with The Autopsy of Jane Doe and then Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The trailer for his latest, The Last Voyage of Demeter, suggests a tone somewhere in between; an epic-sized adventure packed with claustrophobic scares.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Øvredal for the trailer’s release about what we can expect to see and the horrors that await. The trailer gives us a peek at the passengers aboard the Demeter, including actors Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, and Woody Norman. The presence of all three suggests that we can expect the unexpected here.

As E3 continues to do its best impression of the “not quite dead yet” gag, Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is rapidly becoming the premier place for developers and publishers to share their biggest summer game reveals and announcements. If anything, this year may cement the show’s status as a viable E3 competitor or replacement.
That being said, you should know that Keighley has already stated that you should expect this year’s Summer Game Fest show to primarily focus on previously revealed titles. While the phrase “previously revealed titles” covers a lot of ground (more on that in a bit), it still sounds like there may be fewer world-first reveals at Summer Game Fest 2022 than we’ve seen at Keighley-hosted events in the past.
Still, a brief look at some of Summer Game Fest 2022’s confirmed games strongly suggests that this will be one show you won’t want to miss.

There's a lovely symmetry to the structure of Schmigadoon! Season 1 Episode 4, pleasing the sensibilities and enhances the sweet romance blossoming in the central plot development.
It's most obvious in the opening and finale scenes where couples are declaring their love for each other for the first time, kissing, and getting snowed on.
What's positively magical about it all is that between those elegantly drawn moments of burgeoning affection, they managed to fit in a song about the biology of baby-making, a death by Egyptian Hucklebuck (although not on screen), and a whole dance number done on top of desks.
One of the trademarks of Golden Age MGM Musicals was the "movie magic" technology, whether it was camera angle tricks, double-exposure effects, or split-screen "travel."
We get some delightful homages to those here with the dual dance number and the classroom ensemble tap dance.

In 1995, Harvey Weinstein tried to give Mira Sorvino a massage, chasing her around the room when she rebuffed him. In 1996, he sexually assaulted rising French actress Judith Godrèche in a hotel room; a year later, he had another incident with Rose McGowan. In 2008, actress Louisette Geiss fled a hotel room where Weinstein tried to get her to watch him masturbate. In 2010, he tricked another French actress, Emma de Caunes, into visiting a hotel room where he exposed himself and tried to get her lie down.
In all of these accounts, Weinstein seemed to think that the relative privacy of the hotel room provided him with a sanctuary in which he could perform deplorable acts on whomever he pleased, but the context was more specific than that: In every instance, he was at a film festival.
