The first major release of 2024 is a movie about a killer swimming pool. "Night Swim," which was co-written and directed by Bryce McGuire and produced by James Wan ("The Conjuring"), has paddled out into the shallow waters of the January box office, but it faces lingering competition from festive releases. Chief among those is the chocolate-oriented musical fantasy "Wonka," which looks set to hold on to the top spot this weekend after reclaiming it from "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" last week.
Even with the charms of Timothée Chalamet in the titular role, "Wonka" was a risky box office bet. Carrying a production cost of $125 million, it hovers somewhere between mid-budget and big-budget, and musicals can be a tough sell to general audiences. But thanks to nostalgia for 1971's "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," director Paul King's ("Paddington") talent for entertaining family members of all ages, and the Chalamet fan army,...

Tom Tykwer is coming back to the movies.
The German director of Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas has announced his return to filmmaking with the German drama Das Licht (The Light).
The feature, which has just wrapped principal photography, is described as a portrait of a family “between collapse and new beginnings” and deals with the major issues of our time “in a world that is reeling.”
Das Licht is Tykwer’s first feature film since 2016’s A Hologram for the King, starring Tom Hanks. He has spent the past seven years on TV, co-creating and co-directing, with Henk Handloegten and Achim von Borries, four seasons of the acclaimed and award-winning German historic series Babylon Berlin.
Das Licht stars Babylon Berlin alum Lars Eidinger and actor-director Nicolette Krebitz (Wild, My Zoe) as Tim and Milena Engels, a couple whose family, including nearly grown twins Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer) and Jon...

Roger Waters celebrated the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon with a video preview of his upcoming solo re-recording of the seminal 1973 album.
In the brief clip, Waters puts the “me” back into “Us and Them” by stripping the beautifully-layered, late-album epic down to the bassist’s isolated vocals and spare accompaniment. Luckily though, as he quite literally points out in the video, the song’s dramatic instrumental breaks have remained intact.
Waters paired the video with a statement (via Twitter) that further explained the origins of his surprise full-length reimagining after recording the stripped-down Lockdown Sessions during the early pandemic era. Positioning the new take as a “tribute to the original work, but also to re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album,” he recalled that there was a fair bit of “giggling and shouting ‘You must be fucking mad'” between his...

Ben Foster (The Survivor), Justice Smith (Sharper), Katherine Waterston (Babylon) and Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies) are set to star in the Topic Studios thriller Floodplain from director Tim Sutton.
The film explores themes of family trauma, environmental justice and race via the story of a man (Foster) who must return to his hometown to help prevent a catastrophic flood and confront the mistakes from his past.
Floodplain reteams Topic Studios with Foster following their work together on Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace. Bill Gullo wrote the script, with Oscar nominee Jordan Horowitz (La La Land) of Original Headquarters to produce alongside Annie Marter (The Devil All the Time). Topic Studios will finance the pic, with Ryan Heller, Michael Bloom and Jennifer Westin exec producing for the company.
Crystal Bourbeau will introduce the project to buyers at EFM with UTA Independent Film Group, which is co-repping the domestic rights.

Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien has released a nine-minute video for his song “Brasil,” which will appear on his debut solo LP some time in early 2020. The trippy film, directed by Andrew Donoho, shows people all over the globe uniting as one after some sort of extraterrestrial phenomenon touches down on the planet.
“H.P. Lovecraft, [Stanley] Kubrick, and Junji Ito have created some of my favorite sci-fi narratives,” O’Brien said in a statement. “But I’ve always wanted to reinterpret their horrific premises into a more poetic and optimistic notion.
