This is the only game in the series that had direct sequel in form of The House of the Dead 4: Special, as it was set directly after Kate leaving the Goldman's Building.
The bosses name (like previous three games and games after this, save for The House of the Dead: Overkill) are taken from Tarot cards, more specifically the Major Arcana section (Justice, The Lovers, The Empress, Temperance, The Star, and The World). And, unlike previous three games, no bosses had second fight, meaning this is the first game in the series to not had rematch with any of the bosses.
This is the first game in the series that was set in the past (2003 when it was released in 2005), as opposed to the first three games in which it was set in the future (The House of the Dead was released in 1996 and set in 1998, The House of the Dead 2 was released in 1998 and set in 2000, and The House of the Dead III was released in 2003 and set in 2019.)
The last two stages in the game take place in the same locations as the last two stages in House of the Dead 2, Point A0063 and Goldman's headquarters. The background music for both stages are remixed versions of the original HOTD2 songs, also remixed by their original composer, Haruyoshi Tomita. They are respectively titled "Dawn (Remix of Year Seventh)" and "Original Sin (Remix of Year Seventh)" on the game's soundtrack, referring to the seven years since the song's debut at the game, as House of the Dead 2 was released in late 1998 and House of the Dead 4 at the end of 2005.
This game was finally ported to a home console in the Spring of 2012, when it made its début on the Sony PlayStation 3 as a downloadable title from the PlayStation Store, 7 years after its original release. This version supports the PlayStation Move controllers and also includes "The House of the Dead 4 Special" as an unlockable bonus.
