This is how you do a season finale

In the face of defeat, just about every main character has found a way to squeeze something out for themselves, but at a cost.

Aureliano suffers the most. Sure, he's the undisputed boss of the family now but at the price of his girlfriend. After the risks he took to stay with her, even throwing his sister out, for him to suffer this is such a cruel, unjust fate. With nothing left to lose, Livia decided to get one last victory over her brother by killing Isabel, a girl whose only crime was to fall in love with a gangster. The final shot of Aureliano seeing her body just hits home.

Other characters go through their own traumas. Spadino, like Aureliano, finishes this season as boss of his family. And like Aureliano, he's had his own troubles along the way, although not nearly as devastating as Isabel's death. Finally he forces his duty to his family to override his sexual desires in an awkward, disturbing, wonderfully acted scene where he has sex with his wife. The way he looks away as Angelica thrusts on him is sad to watch, and what really drives home the injustice is that he has to secretly pay a hooker to satisfy his sexual needs. And it looks like far from the friendship that developed in the first half of the season, Aureliano and Spadino are going to be rivals, at least for the near future.

As the two gangsters consolidate their power, Samurai is shown at multiple points this episode to be just as weak as the rest of them, when two gangsters are in his house. In the episode's final moment, he gets just a few moments of sleep. While Samurai is tiring, Cinaglia is rising. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next season Cinaglia were to be the one to completely betray Samurai and destroy him.

As for Sara, despite going through a divorce and failing to keep the Ostia land, she ends up with some hope as she plans her next scheme. Gabriele is the only character who didn't get enough meat in this episode. Joining the police is a fitting choice for him but other than that, nothing really happens with him, leading to him being kind of excluded from the finale.

Overall this is a brilliant finale that somehow manages to give all the main characters good send-offs while clearly setting up a second season. It's got a thick plot but also so much emotion, especially in Aureliano's final, devastating scene.
